Despite showing minor indications of its age, we think this 1968

Shelby GT500 KR Convertible is an impressive example of a car

that's mostly original and unrestored.

Painted a lustrous Raven Black (Code 1724-A), the Shelby's

exterior is accented with chrome details and white side

GT500 KR decal stripes. There's a white convertible top that,

when powered down, reveals a cabin space featuring black

vinyl upholstery and wood grain accents — a striking combo

that mirrors the car's slick outside. Under the hood, the KR

Convertible presents an engine compartment that is not only

nicely detailed but also seemingly correct and in its original

form. This Shelby is equipped with working power front disc

brakes, power steering, tilt steering column, and GT equipment

group. However, there are several small accessories that will

need attention, including the wipers, horn, clock, and radio. (As

we mentioned earlier, the GT500 does exhibit some signs of

its 52-year existence. Such signs include minor imperfections in

the chrome, as well as areas of the muscle car's refinished paint,

particularly on the front cowl and hood, where there's evidence

of cracking and orange peel.)

Overall, the car is very serviceable and very appropriate for

regional shows or touring. If it receives the same kind of care

that its previous owners have given it, this Shelby will continue

to present well as a survivor. Otherwise, it would make a great

candidate for enough TLC to bring it back its former glory. The

choice, of course, is up to its next lucky owner.

Timeline

1 9 6 8 The 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible, VIN No.

8T03R210907, is built at the Ford Metuchen plant,

then shipped to and sold through King Motor Co. in

Anniston, AL. It is the 3,780th GT500 produced, and

while we do not have information on the first owner,

we do know that it was eventually purchased by John

Caracciolo of Virginia Beach, VA.

2 0 0 0 Caracciolo holds onto the car until September 2000.

It's sold a month later to its current owner, who

purchased it at Automania in New Braunfels, TX. At

that time, the GT500 had 54,584 original miles on the

odometer. Since then, it's resided in both San Antonio,

TX, and Phoenix, AZ, and has only been driven an

additional 3,400 miles in the past 20 years, for a total

of 57,960 miles since new.
