I arrived at El Salvador after a three hour journey and, at one of the most modern air-ports I have ever seen, I met my exchange bro-ther Ricardo. We soon arrived at my new home and I walked into my first mansion. The house had everything from a bomb shelter to seven bedrooms. More important, it was a place where I knew I was welcome and I sensed this in every home I visited. My first day of school was a new experience, an all-boys school. There was never a dull moment in class. The students all spoke and often disagreed with their teachers, though they usually lost. School wasn't all work as the many chalk fights and occasional rice fights pointed out. Socially, everything hap-pened on weekends. All of the Americans re-ceived country club cards because most of our brothers and sisters belonged. There we had everything from tennis to an Olympic outdoor pool. At night we went to one of the disco-theques, to the movies, or to a party. Our So-cial Life was never quiet. This was a fantastic ten weeks. I met many people and saw a coun-try which is on the move. These people are aware of life and concerned with the world situation of today. With neighbors like the people I met, the United States should have a long and mutually fruitful relationship.

JIM

PETRA The ten weeks I spent in Santiago, Chile, as an exchange student this past summer were among the best

days of my life, and I will be forever grateful to Patchogue High School for giving me that opportunity. Upon arriving at the airport, I was a little frightened and nervous to meet my exchange family, but before we reached "our" home, I found that the Duerr's had already taken me on as one of their own. That night, my "sister" Marlies had a big fiesta planned for me, which lasted until 3:00 a. m., in spite of the fact that we had school the next day. Public schools are rather run down and, therefore, the Chileans primarily send their children to private schools. I attended Colegio Aleman, a German school in Santiago, and we had classes from 8:00 a. M. to 5:30 p. m. Mondays through Saturdays, with an hour or two for lunch, depend-ing on the day. Several of the Chilean customs were peculiar to me. They eat four meals a day, with a big meal at 1 p.m. and 9 p. m. Fiestas, or parties, start about 10 p.m. and last until the last person decides to leave, since there is no time limit. Teen-agers do all the modern dances and listen to the same records we do.

The seasons in South America are completely opposite from those in the United States. It was winter when I arrived in June. However, the winter did bring snow, and there were many occasions to enjoy win-ter sports.

The exchange program gave me the opportunity to see intimately how other Americans live, and to re-alize that there are good people all over the world. I hope that some day more people will come to this realization, and perhaps then, we will have a better world to live in.

BEATE

I am an exchange student from Chile, and for the ten weeks that I will be here, I am attending Patchogue High School. I feel very happy to have the opportunity to be studying in this lovely school. During many years, I have had the desire to know the United States of North America. Now, this wish is fulfilled and I like it very much here. School is very different. Ours begins at 8:15 in the morning and we leave at 1:10 in the afternoon. We have this schedule Monday through Saturday; only on Friday do we have classes in the afternoon from 3:40 to 5:10. Every day we have different classes because we have twelve subjects Our grades range from 1-7, seven being the best. In Chile there are different kinds of schools: primary, secondary private and state public schools. Among the private schools we have a German school, French school, English school, and schools run by nuns and priests. First I attended a German school but soon changed to a public school for girls. Here, I also like the system in which classes are run because in my coun-try the teachers dictate the material and ex-plain very little. Later for the tests, we have to memorize the material. Thus they do not teach us to think as they do here. Also the students here have a closer relationship with their teachers which is somewhat lacking in Chile. I have had English three hours per week for three years, therefore my English is not very good but I am going to do every-thing possible to learn it soon. I don't think it will be too hard for me because the peo-ple are so friendly and good in helping me here. I wish that more students could have the opportunity to know countries because I find that this is the best way for people from all the world to understand each other better.

CARLOS

I have spent a very happy ten weeks here in the United States, sharing with you the classes, cultural and social ac-tivities of Patchogue High School.

I have enjoyed Patchogue High very much, especially its newness, the good teachers that it has, its students and the activities that it has during the year. I have also enjoyed the people of Patch-ogue.

I have lived with the Winters family for two and a half months and I think that they are a wonderful family, typ-ical of North America.

In my country, in the cities there are more private schools than public schools. I attend a private school. In the morning we arrive at 8 o'clock and leave at noon to have lunch. We return at two in the afternoon and leave at four. Generally we have eight or ten subjects in all grades. The school year begins in Jan-uary and ends in the middle of October. We have two important exams during the year, one at mid-year and the other a final. We also have quizzes in be-tween. In regard to sports, we play almost all but the one we like best is soccer.

I have been in the United States be-fore. I like it a lot and think I will return to continue my specialized studies.

I have nothing more to say except that I thank the principal, teachers, and classmates for the kindness they have shown me.

As an Open Door exchange student, I have had the

1 pleasure of visiting this important and beautiful country, the United States, and in particular Patchogue. The people here were very friendly to me and I enjoyed my stay very much.

The family that I stayed with was wonderful, warm, and friendly, and I was very happy here with their help and the help of all the people I met.

Patchogue High School was very different from my

school in Nicaragua. We do not move from class to class as do the American students, but stay in one classroom all day. Also, we cannot choose our own subjects. For in-stance, I have studied English for two years and when I return I will have to study French.

The stores are better here, with many more customers and beautiful show-windows. In Nicaragua they use less

decorations. I learned much from my visit and will be forever grateful

to everyone for making my stay here as rewarding and inspiring as possible.

This past year I have had the opportunity better to under-

stand the customs and people of Latin America through the exchange program. Last summer, I became part of a Costa Rican family and with my "parents," "brothers," and "sisters" had the most rewarding experience of my life. In addition to learning a new language, I was learning a whole new way of living which completely fascinated, though at times, confused me. With my "family", the Castro's, I saw much of the country and came to know what being Costa Rican really means.

Through the exchange program, I learned how vital a role a single person can play in fostering good relations among the nations of the world. Being an exchange student is, in a sense, being an ambassador. It wasn't an easy thing to do, realizing that every word or action, spoken or implied, was a reflection not only on myself, but on my school, community and country as well, but my experience in dealing with citizens of the world rather than of my own country was the most thrilling and re-warding of my life. I hope that I shall be able to return to my other country very soon, for truly, Costa Rica has become my

own country.

Graduation day, June 1968, will be a turning point in your lives. Seventeen tumultuous years have gone by. Ideals, despairs and passions have dominated your young creative minds. You have witnessed some of the greatest and some of the saddest moments in the history of our country: the Viet Nam War; the era of cybernetics and automation; psychedelism. To your generation is entrusted the task of coping with many situations and problems still unresolved. You will face the challenge of probing further into space, understanding and living with the cultural and theological revolution, and dealing with the tide of Civil Insurrection that now besets us.

I hope that we have left you with the wisdom, character and knowledge necessary for coping with these problems. I might suggest a poem for each member of this class to be used as a guide for your future. This poem is the 23rd Psalm for Busy People by Toki Miyashina.

The Lord is my Pace-setter; I shall not rush;

He provides me with images of stillness, which restore my serenity.

He leads me in ways of efficiency, thro' calmness of mind

And His guidance is peace. Even though I have a great

many things to accomplish each day, I will not fret

for His presence is here; His timelessness, His all importance

will keep me in balance. He prepares refreshment and

renewal in the midst of my activity By anointing my mind

with His oils of tranquility. My cup of joyous energy overflows. Surely harmony and effectiveness

shall be the fruits of hours For I shall walk

in the pace of my Lord and dwell in His house forever.

I leave with you a final note: believe in yourself; that which you believe to be true in your heart will be true for all men.

VOL. 40 NO. I PATCHOGUE, N.Y. JUNE, 1968

THE GREAT SCHISM

Patchogue, '64-'65

The freshman class of this town has inevitably been divided, stem-ming from overcrowded conditions.

Students of the former "North School" now attend the newly-o-pened Oregon Ave. Jr. High, where their leaders include Barbara Saudo as President, Gerry Thompson as Vice-President, Sherry Clayman as Secretary, and Ricky Reich as Treas-urer. The main attractions of the year include their Freshman prom and their highly successful portrayal of The Wizard of Oz.

Students of the former "South School" remain at the existing Jr. High School building on South Ocean Ave. Their officers include Joe Man-nino, President; Bruce Texeira, Vice-President; Kris Behme, Secretary; and John Chumas, Treasurer. Similar-ly, their school play, West Side Story, is an immense success and their prom is well attended and enjoyed by all.

TWO OPPOSING FACTIONS

UNITED

Patchogue, '65-'66

Togetherness is finally obtained as the two separate ninth grade class-es combine at the Patchogue Senior High. New and lasting friendships are rapidly made as the students look to each other for security and con-fidence in this new phase of their lives. As the school year gets under-way, the feeling of loneliness be-comes one of belonging, with the

students of both schools eagerly par-ticipating in the numerous activities

offered.

The class unites under the leader-ship of an all-girl command with Bar-bara Yezarski the newly-elected Pres-

ident; Linda Stoll, Vice-President; Sue Recchio, Secretary; and Michelle Ros-en, Treasurer.

Many problems arise to compli-cate the activity plans of the class, but they do succeed in building an original and unique float for the an-

nual Thanksgiving Day parade, and a beach party at Smith Point in June is greatly enjoyed by all.

RECONSTRUCTION COMPLETE HARMONY ESTABLISHED

Patchogue, '66-'67

The once divided Class of '68 is now closely knit and working to-gether heartily to achieve some memorable events. The awe they felt as newcomers to the high school has been overcome and they now take an active part in establishing school functions and running student affairs.

The leading cast for the Junior year includes Bill Fadeley as Presi-dent, Mary Ellen O'Came as Vice-President, Sherry Clayman as Secre-tary, and Grace D'Antonio as Treas-urer.

The magazine drive in the fall is an overwhelming success, surpass-ing the $5,000 goal, and gives the class' empty treasury a needed boost. Class rings are obtained and proudly worn by all. The Junior Picnic is held at Hecksher State Park in May and, despite showers that dampen the day, everyone's spirits remain high.

The crowning event of the year is "Fantasia" which is held at the Route 112 Lounge. Beautiful decorations and lively music make it a romantic evening for all who attend. Barbara Saudo and Bobby Figueira are crowned Queen and King of the prom, a title well-deserved by both.

The closing of the year is marked by the annual moving-up assembly, and all are seniors at last. The pros-pect for the summer is the taking of senior portraits and wild "senior parties."

Patchogue, '67-'68

Classes once again resume and the thriving Class of '68 is at the final stage of its development.

The ultimate elections of the class find Mark Needleman as President, Dan Delaney as Vice-President, Vikki

Zegel as Secretary, and Cheryl Uehl-inger as Treasurer.

The second and last magazine drive in the class' lifetime is quite profitable and makes history, selling more magazines than any previous Senior class of the school.

Collection of dues booms as the payment becomes a pre-requisite for the receiving of a Senior Court Pass. In addition, a Senior Honor Study Hall is established for eligible stu-dents where students may play rec-ords, talk, or listen to radios unsu-pervised.

A "Beat Port" Dance, sponsored by the Senior Class immediately fol-lowing the annual bonfire, is very successful, and the victory the fol-

lowing day just adds to the already aroused spirits of the students.

Long hours of memorization and backbreaking rehearsal prove worth-while as the Senior Show, West Side

Story, brings pride and honor to all who participate. The cast party af-terwards is an added highlight to the show and will never be forgot-

ten. The Senior Prom, Some Enchant-

ed Evening, is an affair to remem-ber. Pale decorations, soft lights, and memorable music combine to form an enhancing setting.

The last activity is a boat ride on Long Island Sound after graduation. The solemnity and sadness of the ceremony are rapidly erased as the students gaily board the slow-mov-ing boat. After an early breakfast, the weary students return home from their last venture together. Each will go his separate way, but the mem-ories of high school days will for-ever remain a part of each and every

student.
