NEh' JERSEY: The ,\ttorney Ge:l(next col.)

f

eral of the State of Ne,., Jersey has advised Governor .lilliam A. Egan that a Newark, New Jersey, promoter has given assurance he \ti 11 place no future advertising concerning purported employment opportunities in ,\laska.

Similarly, advised ,\ttorney General David D. Furman ' assurances have been oDtain-ed from the advertising manager of the Neh' York I·ii~vor that ~t will carry no such advertising in the future.

Furman's assurances came in response to ,rotests by Governor Egan that des•>i te

~ . prev~o~s as~urances that aa-1 vert1s1ng of purported job opportunities would be halt-! ed, the advertisements ,.,ere continuing to appear in various ne\·lspapers and national .mblica tions.

The Ne,., Jersey official said investigation by his office's Consumer Frauds Dureau showed that the advertiser had attempted to cancel existing advertis14 ing commitments, but was unable to do so in all cases because of the a dvance makeup required by the .ublications •

Egan protested the advertisements, which held out the lure of plentiful employment at high saleries, after being advised that a number of families had found it necessary to aJ peal to the Salvation Army and other welfare organizations after arriving in Alaska, and finding that promised

/

jobs did not exist. In addition, the Governor

has writted to all newspapers, periodicals and to

(next col.)

radio stations ,.,hose use of the advertisements has been brol:lght to_his attention , urg1ng the1r cooperation to halt future advertisemtntG of this nature.
