Car of the Month

Purrrrrrrserverenceby Dick Merrill

I first recall developing an interest in Brit-ish cars in the mid-fifties, after seeing apicture of a Healey on the cover of my4th or 5th grade school workbook. I stillhave that workbook. I added some pen-ciled-in accessories to the car like mudflaps, a whip antenna and so on and I re-member thinking it was the coolest ma-chine ever. However, my dream of own-ing such a vehicle wasn’t realized untilafter I had purchased a few American-made beauties. My first car was a 1931Chevy 5-window coupe that I modifiedwith a Ford flathead V8 and an overdrivetransmission, hydraulic brakes and 15"tires. A succession of American cars fol-lowed that Chevy…a Bonnie and Clyde‘32 Ford sedan, a ‘57 Chevy and a fewothers.

My interest in British cars returned in theearly seventies with the purchase of a1972 MGA which I restored and drovefor 12 years. It was in the mid-eighties,when I was assigned as an Army reserv-

ist stationed in Chambersburg, PA, that Ispotted an Austin Healey sitting at a Brit-ish car repair shop. After a few weeks ofdriving by on my way to work and seeingno movement, and the grass getting higherand higher, I finally stopped to look andinquire about the car. I learned that itbelonged to a gentleman who brought thecar there periodically to have repairs done. The mechanic told me that the owner waslosing interest in the car because the doorsdid not close tightly and he suspected thecar had some frame sag that would beexpensive to repair. I asked for the own-ers’ phone number and called to inquireabout a possible sale. He expressed aninterest (on behalf of his wife) and set aprice of $6000. The car looked solid fromthe outside, but I had not heard it run norhad I had the opportunity to look under-neath or drive it. I decided to make anoffer of $2400. The owner was not at allexcited by my offer but wanted to talk itover with his wife and suggested that Icall back in a couple of days. My militarytour was ending that Friday and, drivingnorth on Rt 81, I made the call. He ex-pressed how difficult it was to part withthe car, but that his wife was tired of theexpenditures and wanted it sold. He saidthey could not accept my offer and madea counter offer of $2500. There was nohesitation on my part. I expressed less-than-sincere disappointment with the$2500 but told him he would have a checkwithin a couple of days.

I returned in mid-December to trailer thecar to NH. It had not moved and wascovered with snow. I brought a fresh bat-tery and gas and the car started and ranvery well. I drove it onto the trailer andwe were off. I spent the remainder of

the winter months assessing what Ineeded to do to prepare for some sum-mer driving. The frame was not an issue. Both doors just required adjustment andthen closed beautifully, with a nice body/door line from top to bottom! I bolted ona new starter, put in new points, plugs anda plug wire set and drove the car fornearly five years with no problems.

Eventually, I decided to tear into theHealey to find out for real what I hadpurchased. I stripped the mechanicals andall body parts and was not surprised tofind some old and rusty repairs on all fourfenders. After dusting off the floors, trunk, and underside, I determined that majorsurgery was required. Two outriggers, side rails, rockers, door posts, rear fend-ers and floors were all repaired with newor manufactured panels. The engine andtransmission were completely rebuilt. Theradiator was recored and a 6 blade fanintalled, The clutch and brake cylinderswere rebuilt and brake lines replaced. Ipainted the car, upholstered and carpetedthe interior, bolted everything back to-gether and have had many pleasurabledrives over the last 10 years. The car hasacquired a few dings and paint chips dur-ing some of its’ road wars, but it’ s such apleasure to begin a new driving seasonand hear that Healey exhaust purrrrrrrafter a long winter in the garage.

Gas Saving TipsNow that gasoline prices have increasedrather abruptly it is time to offer somegas saving advice.

Drive More Efficiently:

- Drive slower on the highways. Gasmileage decreases rapidly at speedsabove sixty mph. The mileage decreaseis caused by the shape of your car (co-efficient of drag), but mostly because theengine’s rpm is beyond optimal efficiency.- Avoid “jackrabbit” starts. Drive gently.- Combine errands. Several short tripstaken from a cold start can use twice asmuch fuel as one trip covering the samedistance when the engine is warm.- Use overdrive gears and cruise controlwhen appropriate they improve the fueleconomy of your car when you are drivingon a highway.- Remove excess weight from the trunk. An extra 100 pounds can reduce a typicalcar’s fuel economy by up to 2%.- Avoid packing items on top of your car.A loaded roof rack or carrier creates windresistance and can decrease fueleconomy by 5%.

Maintain Your Car:

- Keep your engine tuned. Tuning yourengine according to your owner’s manualcan increase gas mileage by an averageof 4% depending on a car’s condition.

- Keep your tire properly inflated andaligned. This can increase gas mileage upto 3%.- Change your vehicle’s crankcase oilevery 3,000 to 4,000 miles or every threemonths. Synthetic oil, or motor oil thatsays “Energy Conserving” on theperformance symbol of the AmericanPetroleum Institute contains friction-reducing additives that can improve fueleconomy.- Check and replace air and fuel filtersregularly. Replacing clogged filters canincrease gas mileage up to 10%.

Use the Correct Octane Level:

- Your owner’s manual recommends themost effective octane level for your car.Unless your engine is knocking, buying ahigher octane gasoline is a waste ofmoney. Your car cannot use the extrahydrocarbons. Note: In the late 1970’sthe formula for gauging the octane ratingof gasoline changed. As a rule of thumb:adding 5 octane points for what is listedin the owner’s manual of older is whatyour older car uses. If you cannot getsuper premium I suggest using an octanebooster (like 103 Octane Boost). De-turn-ing your car in order to use a lesser gradeof gasoline decreases fuel mileage andshortens the life of your engine.

Gas-Saving@ Gadgets:

- Be skeptical of claims for devices thatwill Boost your mileage by an extra 6 milesper gallon or improve your fuel economyup to 26 percent or the like. EPA hastested over 100 supposed gas-saving de-

vices and found that very few provide anyfuel economy benefits. The devices thatdo work provide only marginal improve-ments. Some Gas-saving devices maydamage a car’s engine or increase ex-haust emissions. For more informationand a full list of tested products, go towww.epa.gov/otaq/consumer.htm

Gas-Saving E-mails:

- Lately there have been e-mailsoffering “money-saving” tips on pumpinggas. I suggest going to www.snopes.com,then enter “gas saving” using their searchengine. They have a very good analysisof these “suggestions”.

Old Business:

A big round of thank-yous and applauseto Bob and JR Cushman for hosting thetech session on the 3rd. John Twist wasthe speaker and according to attendeeshe was phenomenal. You can check himout on utube – he has some 62 videos onhow to fix your British car. He did 3 hoursof tech session and tuned up an MGTseries and an MGB. There were about25 people at the session.

Show of Dreams:

Mike Sweet talked about the Show ofDreams. So far we have three vendors, the snack stand on the field will have plentyof food (all under $5). The field by theway looks great – we really think every-one will like the location. If you plan tostay over (and drink on the WinnieBellecruise as I am), some of us are booked atthe Allen A Motor Inn. If you plan tostay in the area book early!! The Showteam has been meeting with The Nick andwith the Wolfeboro Inn to plan the event. Both The Nick and Wolfeboro Inn aresolidly behind the car show and are doingeverything they can to help make this suc-cessful.

For those of you who are unaware – weare planning the 2009 show at the sametime we’re doing 2008. 2009 will be a 2day event and is scheduled for Septem-ber 12-13.

Back to 2008 after that briefcommercial. The ladies whohad lunch (actually it wasbreakfast) walked the town ofWolfeboro a few weekendsago and introduced BCNH,High Hopes and our show tothe locals. They were all gra-cious and looking forward tothe show – we hope many of

them will become vendors at the event.

For those of you who do not like to sitaround the car show – there will be thetrolley to take you from the field into town. There is a small charge for the trolley –not sure how much yet. One of the artgalleries in town will be having a showthat day and there are several really nicecraft and art shops in town. Down at thedock there are other types of boat cruisesavailable.

Speaking of cruises - There will be anevening cruise featuring music, a cash barand food on the Winnipesaukee Belle. Wewill be opening the cruise up to the publicif we don’t sell all of the tickets before-hand so get yours early. The WinnieBelleis a paddlewheel steamer that was usedon the Mississippi around the turn of thelast century. It has been completely re-furbished and will be a great ride. We’vebeen told that the boat is smaller and isable to go into coves and Loon areas thatthe larger Mt Washington cannot. Tick-ets will be priced between $25-$30 perperson and will be available soon. Youcan sign up for the cruise on the sameform you sign up for the Car Show. Thecruise is 2 hours and starts at 6:00PM.Also at the show will be British Motor-cycles.

New this year will be a special raffle itemworth about $250-$300 – just for pre-reg-istered cars!! So, pre-register and winBIG.

The Nick is planning to get a Hot AirBalloon for tethered rides at the field also.

If you know anyone who would like toset up a vendor table at the event the feeis $100 – have them contact DianaStanley at 496-3395 or

[email protected].

Listed elsewhere in the newsletter is thelist of show chairs and their contact in-formation. We really need people tovolunteer to help out – please call usor email us!

Regalia:

Suzi Polenchar, our BCNH boutique man-ager is selling last year’s show shirts at adiscount. Call her if you need anything. Also, she is trying to determine if there isenough interest in car badges. We nolonger have any in stock – the up frontcosts are high ($1000) so we need to makesure we can sell enough badges to coverthe cost. If you are interested in a carbadge let Suzi know!

Upcoming Events:

The first of the Sunday Drives is on May18th. Meet at what was the Village Eat-ery in Goffstown – no one seems to knowthe new name – it’s on the Main St justlook for the British cars. The Drive willbe leaving the restaurant at 10AM sharp.

The MGT Register GOF (Gathering ofFriends) (wonder if that has anything todo with being Quacker … rather Quaker)is scheduled for May 29- June 1 in Hamp-ton at the Ashworth by the Sea.

Meeting Place:

We again discussed moving the meeting. The Cat and Fiddle and the Red Blazer inConcord were mentioned as possiblesites. We discussed the fact that weseem to get more attendance in theBedford / Manchester area. If anyonehas suggestions please let Wade know. The requirements are simple – they musthave a meeting room (no we won’t pay a

Old Barn Storys

by John Giese

Recently, there was a story going aroundon the internet about a couple who boughta place in Australia that had a big old barnthat was sealed up so that no one couldtell what was in it. The former ownerhad died and no one knew what was inthe barn. After the new owners had com-pleted the purchase they found that thebarn was filled with exotic old cars thatwere worth around $34 million.

This story turned out to be a hoax, but itgot me to thinking that there are manytrue stories about people finding some longforgotten gems hiding in the back ofsomeone’s barn. Perhaps you have sucha story that you would like to share withour readers. I have such a story.

In 1970 I had a Triumph Trophy motor-cycle (the single carburetor version of theBonneville). It was the fastest thing I hadever driven. But, in terms of reliability, itwas as bad as any British car I have everowned. It only had 7,000 miles on it when, one Sunday evening, I was driving downthe New York Thruway in 60 mph,bumper-to-bumper traffic, girl on the back, and it threw a rod through the case.

After I rebuilt the engine, I put it out onthe front lawn with a For Sale sign on it.It looked great and was really fast so somekid who was hot to have a fast bike cameand bought it. After he paid for it and

came to take it away, he asked me whatI was now going to do for a bike. I toldhim that I was going to look for some-thing more reliable, like a BMW. He saidto me that the owner of the company thathe worked for had a BMW gathering dustin the back of his barn and that he mightbe interested in selling it.

I called the guy up and he said that he didhave a BMW and he would consider sell-ing it so I went over to see it. Sure enough, there it was sitting in the back of his barncovered with dust. It was a top-of-the-line 1965 BMW R69S and it was sport-ing a British 1965 license plate. He pulledit out, gave it one kick and it started up. Itook it for a spin down the street and whenI opened the throttle the front wheel cameup off the ground, something normal

BMWs could not do because of theirweight and heavy fly wheel. I came backto him and asked him what he had doneto it to make it so fast.

He told me that in 1965 he had gone toEdinburgh college in England and hisroommate’s father owned a BMW mo-torcycle dealership in Germany. In hiswords, he said to me, “Well we had al-ways had two Rolls Royces in the familyso when it came to buying a motorcycle Ihad to have the best.” (To this day, thatquote is a little in-joke for me and mywife.) He had this top-of-the-line motor-cycle custom made and shipped to hisschool in England. That same year hehurt his back wrestling and could no longerride the bike so he had it shipped back tothe factory in Germany, had the enginetorn down and rebalanced and thenshipped it to his family home in New Jer-sey where it was put in the barn to col-lect dust until I came along.

I asked him how much he wanted and hesaid $500. (That would probably be $5000in today’s dollars). I ripped the moneyout of my pocket and drove off with thebest and last motorcycle I ever owned.

Over the next 10 years that motorcycleand I had some adventures.

Thanks A Lot Rod

by Paul Karle

In September of 2006 Doris and I wentto the British Invasion at Stowe VT alongwith Norma, Rod and other members ofBCNH. The last thing on my mind wasbuying a British car, but when Doris andNorma found a Triumph Stag for sale atthe Car Coral, I was intrigued. What is aStag?

So, Rod and I walked over to look at it.The body had been restored but the ownerwas not sure how long ago. Not wantingto buy a rust bucket (body work was nolonger my thing), I looked over the body. The body was in good shape and the in-terior was OK but it needed some work.(It still does.) The original V-8 engine onthese cars was problematic, but this onehad been replaced with a GM 2.8 V-6and the 4-speed transmission replacedwith a 5-speed although I am still not surefrom what.

That night we talked about the car. Rodof coarse was all for me buying it sayingthings such as: “It’s a great car for theprice.” “You can’t take your money withyou when you die so you might as wellspend it now.” So I decided to take it for

a test drive. The Stag drove OK but Icould tell it needed some work such asreplacing the struts, shocks, and brakes.I made an offer, bought the stag, and madearrangements for delivery. The Inkwasn’t even dry on check before Rodbegan running around telling everyone,“You should see the CLAM Paul justbought.” Remember he’s the one whosaid, “Great car for the Price.” ThanksRod, what a great brother-in-law you are. This was only the beginning; more timeand money would soon follow.

The problem with a Stag is that it is not avery popular car in the United States. Most of the parts have to be importedfrom the U.K.

We started with making it a little moreroad worthy by removing the wheels andreplacing the studs, seeing how they wereloose. The holes in the flange were wornand egg shaped. This was quite a chorein and of itself. The knurl that holds thewheel studs in place had been strippedoff. So to get the wheels off, you had topull on each wheel as you took off thenuts, it took two of us and an air wrenchto remove the wheels. We checked thebrake shoes on the rear and made surethe cylinders were not leaking. The frontpads needed to be replaced, but the cali-pers were OK. I took the one good wheelstud and dial caliper to the parts store andended up with some wheel studs for anearly GM A-Body car. I had to drill outthe flange and modify the studs to matchthe taper on the heads of the original studs.Problem one fixed.

We next took it out for a test drive. Doriscalled Norma on her cell phone to bragabout getting the stag on the road. Sheshould have never called to brag, because

no sooner did she hang up than the shifterfell off in my hand. Doris and I laughedand chalked it up to what you get whenyou are a British car owner. Thanks Rod!This is one of many “thank you Rod”moments.

Now to tackle problem two; I needed toreplace the two front struts. These wereonly available in the UK. The strut tubeswere so worn that the retainers would notstay in and not enough material was leftto bore it vout and rethread. I ended upordering remanufactured strut tubes, newstruts, front springs and top mounts fromRimmer Bros. It is now back on theroad and safe to drive.

The other problems are typical of Britishautos of this vintage, Electrical wiring andbad grounds. Why do the British use blackfor Ground and Green for power?

I also found the heater needed to be re-paired. The core had split and was leak-ing on our feet. When I couldn’t find anew core. I took it to Willard’s radiator inHudson and he was able to repair it. Thisjob is not for the faint of heart. The wholedash had to be removed to get the heaterbox out. That was also the perfect timeto repair and install the new old stockpadded dash I had found last summer. Inthe coarse of this repair I found that who-ever had worked on the stag before mehad cut some wires under the dash andleft them bare.

Now I am in the process of repairing theclutch cylinder leak and rear pinion seal.Of coarse they both leak (it wouldn’t beBritish if it didn’t leak some type of fluid).

There is still a lot of work to be done onthe stag, I will pick away at repairingthings one at a time. I am sure it will benever ending.

Norma, Doris, and Diana went toWolfeboro and visited the shops, leav-ing SOD information with most ofthem. The town is enthusiastic aboutBCNH setting up shop there in Au-gust. Tracy Hayes, the Rec Managerfor The Nick Field, is working on get-ting a tethered hot air balloon for theshow. The concession stand looks tohave a good selection of food to keepall those hungry – burgers, hot dogs, snacks, and a breakfast sandwich allunder 5 bucks – satisfied and not toocostly.

Currently we have 3 vendors/spon-sors. If you know of someone thatwould like to be a vendor or sponsorplease let us know!

We really need club participation – thecommittee has been doing an abso-lutely fantastic job of moving this showforward and making it something thisClub can be proud of, and still haveday jobs to do. Be a part of it!

We have chartered the Winni Belle fortwo hours with music, apps, and greatweather. For added fun we can havethe best Skipper/Gilligan impressionsand a sing along of the Gilligan’s Isletheme. After God Save The Queen,of course.

All this for 25 dollars – cheaper thana tank of premium (or regular) gas inyour British car!

Thanks to the SOD team for makingit happen!

Michael D. Sweet
