The U. S. Naval Postgraduate School

In 1904, in order to meet the need for additional technical training for officers, the Bureau of Engineering of the Navy Depart­ment established a course of instruction in Marine Engineering. Results were so beneficial that in 1909 the Secretary of the Navy established a School of Marine Engineering at the Naval Academy; this School became the Postgraduate Department of the Naval Academy in 1912, and in 1921. following the addition of other engineering curricula, it became a postgraduate school. The General Line course was established within the Postgraduate School in 1927 to acquaint officers with modern developments taking place in the Navy and to broaden their professional knowledge by means of integrated courses in naval science. In 1946 the General Line School was established in order to meet the rapidly expanding requirements for additional professional knowledge in this field .

During and following World War II the physical and ac­ademic growth of the school resulted in congressional legislation recognizing its stature by authorizing the conferring of Bachelors, Masters, and Doctors degrees in engineering and related subjects, establishing the position of Academic Dean to insure continuity in academic policy, and providing funds for the permanent estab­lishment of the school at Monterey, California.

On 22 December 19 51, the Secretary of the Navy established the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey. As presently organized, the principal components are the Engineering School under a Director, the General Line School under a Director. and the Administrative Command under a Commanding Officer. The faculty of both schools are under the academic direction of the Dean. All components are under the command of an officer of flag rank with the title of Superintendent.

The Engineering School now conducts forty-three curricula entirely or in part at Monterey, and is responsible for students in twenty-seven other curricula conducted entirely at other educational institutions. Graduating today are three hundred and nine students from twenty-six curricula, all of which are specifically designed to provide advanced education in scientific. technical or professional fields to meet the needs of the Navy.
