Alumnus uses international law education for Peace Corps service in Armenia

Jeff Rosato ’00 is joining the Peace Corps in

June and moving to Armenia, a small country

in the South Caucasus mountain range of the

Former Soviet Union that is bordered by Iran,

Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. His assignment is

to work with local and regional officials to address

wilderness conservation and environmental protec-

tion issues.

“I thought I had lost my last chance to serve

in the Peace Corps when I came to Stetson.

Instead, my law degree and subsequent work

experience opened doors to a far more relevant

and meaningful experience than I could ever have

had immediately after college,” said Rosato.

Jeff’s passion for politics and public policy

led him to Washington D.C., where he worked for a

U.S. Senator. He said his Peace Corps assignment

is the best way he can make a contribution. “The

Armenian people have been tossed aside from one

empire to another over the last three thousand

years. Miraculously, Armenia, one of the oldest

civilizations on Earth, at the crossroads of Central

Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, has sur-

vived. It survived despite a devastating genocide in

the early twentieth century that killed more than a

million Armenians, the collapse of the Soviet Union,

wars with a neighbor, and a catastrophic earth-

quake in 1988. I believe that at this critical

moment in history as Armenia emerges into a free-

market and democratic society, I can have some

impact, no matter how small.”

“As lawyers,” Rosato said, “We have rare

skills and abilities that can make an enormous dif-

ference in people’s lives as well as improve the

character of the system in which we operate.”

Many of Jeff’s friends and colleagues have

questioned his decision to work overseas during a

time when perception of America is fragile. “It’s

important to go now and make personal connec-

tions with people and share American values

before those negative attitudes fester even more.”

“At the same time, the opportunity to live in

the former Soviet Union, learn to speak Armenian

and Russian, and work in international develop-

ment and in the governments of other nations is an

unparalleled opportunity for me.”

After the Peace Corps, Jeff hopes to work for

the Department of State as a Foreign Service

Officer, for the United States Agency for

International Development (USAID), or perhaps for

an international nongovernmental organization.

“Even if I decide to return to Washington, I know

that this experience will prove an invaluable com-

pliment to my career and an incredible adventure

as well.”

While at Stetson, Rosato served as a mem-

ber of the Jessup International Law Moot Court

team and coached one of Stetson’s International

Environmental Moot Court teams; he also worked

as Interim Dean Darby Dickerson’s research assis-

tant.

“Jeff was always interested in international

law and policy, so this Peace Corps position is a

perfect one for him. Jeff has the ability to adapt

well to situations, and he is very skilled in dealing

with other cultures, so I know that he will excel in

his current assignment. I am very proud that Jeff

has followed his dream,” said Dean Dickerson.
