Women's FashionFrom ball gowns to Britain designer

inspired outfits the 1950s were probably the most creative era for fashion. The war had just ended and many artists gathered in Britain to design new fashion. Many of these ideas were sold and used for new fashion in other countries. Britain sold her ideas because she needed money after the war.

Some of Britain’s fashionable clothes were bought by rich Americans, and when everyone saw what the rich people were wearing they wanted it too.

Pearls, hats, skirts, and heels were all very popular, while white gloves were a must. Petticoats were also very popular because they helped fill out the ball gowns.

Women's Hairstyles

There were two popular hairstyles back in the 1950’s for women. There was the bob (a short haircut like Marilyn Monroe top left) and the ponytail. Of course there was more then just those hairstyles but those were the most used styles back in the 1950s. And both of these hairstyles are still popular today.

Men fashion The men's style did not change

much if at all. They were happy to get back from the war and go to work because they liked to wear suits, they also would wear blue jeans when they weren’t working. They didn’t change hairstyles if at all (not much you can do with short hair) but they did however wear different types of hats in public. The hat like the gloves for women was a fashionable statement for men at that time.

Young adultsBefore War World two had ended, you either dressed like a child or an adult. Now that the war was over and young adults (or as we call them now teenagers) had more time on their hands, they started to wear what they wanted not always what their parents wanted. Therefore a new type of fashion emerged “teenager fashion” that catered to this new group of individuals.

Young women usually dressed in one out of two styles. There was the Greaser look (this was called the Teddy girls look in Europe) and the “good girl” look (they were the ones that wore poodle skirts). While young men usually dressed in either an all American style (leather jacket and blue jeans) or they dressed preppy (pressed pants and shirts).
