For ninety years the people of St. Andrew have sat in those pews in which you sit today. For ninety years

believers like you have stood on those wood floors under your feet to celebrate the Holy Mass, to ask for

healing, to seek forgiveness, to bring their children to First Communion, to bury their dead and to watch

their daughters walk up the aisle to meet their grooms. Ninety years of prayers and cares!

The proceeds from this year’s “Reverse Tithing Sweepstakes” will refinish the floor and refurbish the pews

of our church. The project will be completed for $54,000 ($6,000 for the floor and $48,000 for the pews).

If you buy a ticket or two, they are $50 each. If you can afford only a portion of a ticket ($25, $10 or

whatever), send it to the parish office, and we will find someone to share a ticket with you.

We appreciate any gift of $1,000 that would underwrite the cost of one

pew. A gift of this kind, outside the raffle, would be tax-deductible.

Please help me wish our church a happy 90th birthday.

New Lens, New Life.

For those just baptized at the Easter Vigil, the church refers to you as “neophytes”,

beginners, newbies, novices to the faith, etc. Within the RCIA these beginners enter a phase

in the faith called “mystagogy” which is a time for the entire community as well as the

neophytes to grow in deepening our grasp of the paschal mystery. The celebration of faith,

living our baptismal promise meaningfully in every walk of life, is the very intention

of baptism. I like to call this, “living the mysteries.”

From the forward of his book, Practice Makes Catholic, Joe Paprocki

writes: “Can you imagine having corrective eyeglasses prescribed for

you but choosing to wear them only on the day you purchased them

and then once a week for an hour or so on Sunday? No doubt, seeing clearly each day of the

week would be a struggle. And yet, unfortunately, this is what many of us do with our baptism,

which is Jesus’ vision for life. We “put on” the eyes of Christ on the day of our baptism and on

Sunday when we attend Mass. Yet, the rest of the week, we find ourselves struggling to see as

Jesus sees.”

Regardless of when we were baptized, we are called to be witnesses of Christ in the world. We are all novices,

newbies to the faith with every new moment of life. Ours is to perfect the way of Christ within us, so as to live the

faith as profound witnesses to the Gospel. All of the baptized put on the Christ lens. How clearly do you see?

Together let us “live the mysteries”.

STEWARDSHIP OBSERVATIONS

ST. ANDREW CEMETERY, located on South Milford Road, is a beautiful cemetery for

members of St. Andrew and their families. It is quietly nestled between SEM Villa and SEM

Terrace and originated circa 1854. There are over 200 gravesites available. We offer

convenient payment plans. Please call the Parish

Office if you wish to purchase lots.

Since we do not charge for Perpetual Care and must

make arrangements to ensure that necessary funding

is available for lifetime care, we will be increasing

our cemetery prices in the summer of 2012. Please

note that we are less expensive than any local cemetery. Make your

purchase now, while costs are lower.

Christine Yankovsky, our new Database Administrator, and I attended a Catholic Cemetery workshop in April. We

were energized with new ideas for our cemetery. These ideas were presented at the Cemetery, Grounds and Facilities

meeting in April. Some of the new ideas we will be exploring/investigating include cleaning out currently

undeveloped areas, adding colorful landscaping, selling memorials, adding a columbarium, and reclaiming 100-year-

old “abandoned” graves.

The State of Ohio Commerce Department governs all cemeteries and dictates that all cemetery monies are kept

separate from church funds. So, no money from the Church operating account would be used to do any improvements

at the cemetery. If you have further questions, please call me.

Living a Eucharistic Life

What does it mean to live a Eucharistic Life? It begins at Mass by being an active participant in

the liturgy and having the burning desire to receive the Eucharist. To start the week off

receiving the Eucharist is the ultimate satisfaction. To have Christ within is like having the

bread for the journey that we need to keep us going. It is teaching our children the values of

our Catholic faith. It is recognizing the “It’s boring! Do I really have to go to Mass?”

statements but instead of giving in, calling our children to a greater understanding. At the end

of Mass the words “go in peace to love and serve the Lord” is our call to action in living that

Eucharistic life. It’s not the end of Mass; it is the beginning of living a Christ-like life for the rest

of the week.

To love and to serve…our mission, our goal. It starts in the parking lot after Mass. It’s not the

race to see who can get to Bob Evans first. It’s that loving kindness you show that allows for

the mom to load her child into the car seat before you get into your car. It’s the patience to let the elderly man with

a cane go ahead of you in the parking lot even though he causes a slowdown of the traffic. It continues at home,

when someone calls for help right before the kickoff or the first pitch of a big game. Or it’s picking up that lonely

person so that he can share in Christ’s presence during the game. It is giving of yourself and acting as Jesus would

whenever a situation arises. It is the little things that you do without even blinking an eye. It is in how you handle a

difficult situation. It is digging deep within yourself when you feel you have nothing left to give, always balancing

that giving with love and reverence for yourself.

Proclaiming the Word By Mike Hazard, Parishioner

Lent is over; Jesus is risen, Alleluia, Alleluia! While we are in the Easter Season now

and I rejoice, I reflect back on Lent. I go back to the gospel on the third Sunday of

Lent. It is a reading that is repeated to the Catechumens who are to be baptized at the

Easter Vigil. It is a reading I have heard many times, but this year it struck a new

chord; it spoke to me in a way as never before. This moment Jesus has with the

Samaritan woman is perhaps a moment we would all love to experience.

The Samaritan woman represents the antipathy of the Jewish man at the time. First, she is a woman and no

Jewish man would ever be seen talking to a woman in public. Second, she is a Samaritan, viewed as a

traitor to the ways of the Jewish people. And, lastly, she had

been married several times. Now we know that Jesus broke

down the barriers of the time, but it is his gentle nature in

doing so that moves me. This woman was fully aware of

their differences and by all standards should have run away

fearful and embarrassed. Yet, something tugs at her to stay

and talk with Jesus. The mere presence of Jesus puts her at

ease. A peaceful calm comes over her and she feels his

sympathy and caring. She trusts Jesus. They talk and

something wonderful happens to the woman, she becomes a

believer, a disciple. Imagine what it must have felt like just

to be in the sheer physical presence of Jesus. Do you have

such feelings today?

It’s hard to believe that the school year is nearly over! With that, SMILE activities are wrapping up for the year as well. We will continue with service projects and Friday Adoration throughout the summer, but monthly meetings will be on hold until September 16

th.

In the past few months, I have asked several people to consider

becoming Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. I have had

some interesting answers including: “There is nothing extraordinary

about me.” “I just don’t think I have the time, my schedule is really

erratic.” “I am not a showy kind of person. I like to stay in the

background.” If any of these express how you feel, you are just the

person Christ is looking for to serve in this ministry.

Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

include the Celebrant of the Mass and

the Deacon. The Extraordinary Ministers

of Holy Communion are assisting the

Ordinary Minister. Making time in your schedule for another activity is never easy but as an

Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion you will be scheduled, at your convenience, only a

couple times a year unless you would like to be scheduled more often. And, if you are not

showy, you may well be the ideal minister. The Body and Blood of Christ is the sole purpose

of this part of the liturgy. Serving the Eucharist to your fellow parishioners is an honor but

more importantly, it is a humbling experience.

Since December, we have been blessed with several newly commissioned Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

including: Peg Brietenbach, Tom DeVolve, Brenna Hartwell, Judy Hoffman, Roseanne Keim, John and Vicki Kundrat,

Salvatore Marino, Sophie Mezack, Josh Rhein, and Sarah Wuerfel. Imagine Christ asking you to “Feed My Sheep”, and you

responding with “I am not extraordinary, my schedule is erratic or I am not showy enough.” Makes you stop and think!

There is one more training session before Autumn on May 16, 2012 in the Church from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. If you would

have an interest in becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion or need more information, call Cathy O’Toole

BASEBALL....HOT DOGS....ICE COLD BEER....PLAY BALL..,.

All men, and high school age boys, are cordially invited to "Play Ball"...Softball, that is.

Where...SEM Villa

When... each Wednesday evening starting at 6:30PM. Play until dark, or until everybody is tired

and worn out. This is a fun, pickup game, good practice, good experience. It's reported that

Jack Evans is coming back to play third base this year. He's been offered a one-year contract

reported to be 6 million dollars by Holy Name Manager, Fred Riehle. However, he has to pass a physical

first....Manager Riehle says he is expecting a new TV sponsor...Burger Beer...to pay the large contract to Jack Evans.

The rest of the team will get minimum wage, as manager Riehle struggles to meet payroll. Some of the younger

players may get no pay. However, it is rumored that the Castellinis are watching for future REDS players from this

Holy Name Group.

SASEAS, and to give tribute to these students is one of the highlights of the year!

Ladies Sodality

May 5th (Saturday) is fast approaching as the Ladies Sodality

prepares for its annual Flea Market, Perennial Plant Sale and

Bake Sale. The doors open at 9:00 a.m. Plan to arrive ahead of

time because the line to enter forms early.

We are grateful for continued generous donations of flea market items, potted plants, bushes,

ground cover and baked goods. This year we are accepting furniture (no sofas or mattresses),

and no clothing, please.

Items begin arriving Thursday afternoon and by Friday a steady stream of cars, trucks and vans pull up ready to unload. These items, now our treasures, will be sorted, priced and placed

on appropriate tables to be purchased Saturday. Plants and bake sale items may also be delivered at the times and days below. The proceeds from this fundraiser help pay for the altar bread and wine. We have had Invention Convention, Political Convention, Right To Read Week, Knights of Columbus Religious awards, plays, and talent shows. Top it all off with Walk A Thon, May Crowning, Washington D.C., 5th grade picnic, May Day, First Communion, 8th grade picnic, and graduation.

Have you noticed that as it gets closer to the Christ Renews His Parish weekends you find yourself avoiding "them"

because you know that "they" are going to ask you again, “Have you made the Christ Renews weekend?”

You have used up all your excuses so you duck down the cookie aisle or dive behind the

bushes and hope they won't follow you! Let me try to explain our enthusiasm. Have you

ever seen a beautiful sunset? I mean one of those gorgeous sunsets that is so awesome it

kind of takes your breath away, and you know in that moment you are beholding a tiny

glimpse of the splendor of your God? If you were alone, what's the first thing you want to

do when you see someone? You want to tell them about it, or you ask them "did you see

tonight's sunset?”. You try to tell them about it, but words just can't describe it. You may

have taken a picture of it with your cell phone, but you tell them, "even this doesn't do it

justice--you just have to be there--you have to see it for yourself."

Well, that's how it is for the folks who have attended the Christ Renews Weekend. They

have "been there," they have "seen for themselves," and have had such a wonderful

experience, they just want to share it with everyone, but words can't do it justice, you just "have to be there".

The next Christ Renews His Parish weekend experience for the ladies of St. Andrew and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

is August 4th and 5th. As "our" St. Andrew said to his brother, Peter, "why don't you come and see for yourself?".

On March 15, new Honduras mahogany doors were installed at the corners of St. Andrew Church.

They match the main doors. The doors and the hardware are new. The windows - you guessed it -

were taken out of the old doors, refurbished, and built into these new doors. They are glorious.

Come see them. These doors, too, will open wide at thought of your coming!
