How to Find the Mean of a Group of Numbers
•Step 1 – Add all the numbers.
8, 10, 12, 18, 22, 26

How to Find the Mean of a Group of Numbers
•Step 2 – Divide the sum by the number of addends.
8, 10, 12, 18, 22, 26
8+10+12+18+22+26 = 96 How many addends are there?

How to Find the Mean of a Group of Numbers
The mean or average of these numbers is 16.
8, 10, 12, 18, 22, 26
![Page 12: 1/9/2013 Sponge Mary purchased 6 apples for 1.26 and John purchased 8 for 1.96. which person had the better rate? Show your work.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551566d1550346486b8b4b2e/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
When you are given the mean and need to find a missing number following these steps:• Mean=85• 86,83,81,____ (4 numbers)• Look at how many numbers you have
in your set• Multiply the sum of the total numbers
by the given mean (85 x 4=340) • Add the numbers you know together• 86+83+81=250(sum)

What is an outlier
• For a set of numerical data, any value that is markedly smaller or larger than other values.
• In other words: the number that does not go with the other numbers in data.
• 4,1,3,5,28• Outlier is 28

How do outliers change your mean
• They can increase or decrease your mean.
• 4,1,3,5,28• The mean is 8.2 • If we were to drop the outlier the
mean is 2.6• You see the difference in having an
outlier and not having one Copyright © 2000 by Monica Yuskaitis
