A fine and warm Christmas day is likely for Blenheim but everyone will have to survive some weekend rain first.

MetService media and communica-tions meteorologist, John Law says a long-range forecast suggests Blenheim will have a high of 25 degrees Celsius for the big day buffeted by a north easterly

breeze.“There will be wet weather this

weekend but there is meant to be a more settled pattern come the start of the week.”

Law says a large high is likely to sta-tion itself over the east of the country which should see temperatures return

to summer levels in time for the big day.“It should bring the kind of weather

that the people of Marlborough want to stick around.”

Law says as long as wind and atmos-pheric conditions stay the same, the summer weather should last well close to the start of 2015.

by Jacob PageSpringlands School pupil Li-

lah Bowers has won a national competition with a cover design for limited edition exercise books that will be donated to low decile schools around New Zealand.

The national Art for Books competition, run by Warehouse Stationery, invited primary, intermediate and secondary school students to design a new cover for Impact 1B5 books with iconic New Zealand artist Dick Frizzell judging the 500-plus entries.

Lilah took out the top prize for the primary school level with a

colourful depiction of children painting a school-themed mu-ral. “Lilah’s design is original, clearly stated and remarkably well envisaged,” says Frizzell.

“It all came together and really stood out from other entries.”

The 11-year-old says she was inspired by the arts and crafts programme, and planning for a mural at her school. “I love doing art and being creative. I really like putting my own mark on things that I draw or paint,” says Lilah, who screamed with excitement when she discovered she had won the competition.

Mum Heather Bowers says Li-lah saves all her pocket money to buy art supplies, and makes paintings and drawings for friends and family constantly. “She immediately wanted to enter the competition, and re-

ally thought about the book and how her design would look on it,” adds Heather.

In recognition of her winning design, Lilah will receive an iPad and a $250 Warehouse Stationery voucher, and her school will receive a $1000 Warehouse Stationery voucher.

Thousands of limited edition books bearing the three win-ning designs will be printed by Warehouse Stationery, and a total of 120,000 creatively covered books will be distrib-uted to low decile schools in early February to coincide with pupils returning to school.

Continued from page 1Everything from brand new children’s

toys and clothing, to perfume, jewellery and beauty products were donated by the bag loads for The Sun’s Annual Christmas Appeal for charity.

Marlborough Women’s Refuge manager Rachel Black says she was amazed at the amount of donations given, and excited for the families who would be receiving them.

“Finances are tight for many families and the pressure of having to pay rent as well as buy Christmas presents really does affect them.

“Domestic violence does increase before and after Christmas and the children we have coming through are of all ages.

“Anything we can do to make things better for the kids, mum and the family has got to

be a good thing, and thanks to the incredible generosity of the community, these families will have a less stressful Christmas,” she says.

Kits for Kids coordinator Mary Hart says she was ‘blown away’ and left feeling emotional after seeing what the community had donated.

“I do this work for the kids, and to know that these foster kids who are going through are difficult time will have something that is special for them, this really makes me happy.

“I don’t know if I could thank everyone enough for their kindness and willingness to support this cause,” she says.

SHELLFISH CLOSUREThe Nelson Marlborough medical

officer of health, Dr Ed Kiddle, has warned the public not to take or eat shellfish from the Onapua/Opua Bays in Tory Channel.

“Routine testing of shellfish in this area has shown higher than accept-able levels of Saxitoxin to be present.”

People who want more information about the safety of shellfish in their possession should contact the On Call Health Protection Officer on (03) 520 9999. People who become ill after eating shellfish should seek medical attention.

ONLY MARLBOROUGHAlmost 100 people have regis-

tered to use the Only Marlborough regional identity resources, just a month after its launch.

The reaction to the new identity has been overwhelmingly positive, Marlborough mayor Alistair Sow-man says.

Only Marlborough was devel-oped by a group of Marlborough organisations: Wine Marlborough, the Marlborough Chamber of Com-merce, Marlborough Research Cen-tre, Destination Marlborough, and the Marlborough District Council. The resources, including the logo and brand, are available free of charge to businesses and organisa-tions that want to align with the Marlborough identity.

SCOTCH BAR

mon-sat 4pm - late

By Jacob PageThe new leading lady of arguably Blen-

heim’s oldest rock band, Condition Red, had not started school when the band was a regular act at bars and clubs in the early 1990s.

However, 25-year-old Shelley Fraser is more than holding up her end of the deal with these veteran musicians.

Fraser was plucked from the relative obscurity of a karaoke night three years ago and had her arm twisted to play with the band after they lost lead vocalist, Steve McManus to an ear issue.

The band which has only performed a couple of times over the past two years is preparing for a New Year’s Eve gig at the Royal Hotel.

Founding members, Cyril Dawson, Steve “Bunty” Kennett and Richard ‘Rizzo’ Mc-Garry say they’ve welcomed Fraser in with open arms.

Fraser is roughly the same age as the founding members were when the band formed.

“She might be a lot younger than us but I knew the moment I heard her voice that I wanted her to come down and sing with us,” McGarry says.

“She fits right in and while we can’t do some of the things we could do with (McManus), Shelley gives us other strengths and a new array of songs we can play.”

Mixed in with songs from The Eagles, Led Zeppelin and Dragon, comes Shelley’s ability to perform songs from bands like the Cranberries.

“It was a big thing for me to try out because I’ve done some stage and theatre singing but nothing quite like this,” Fraser says.

“I just need to learn more songs but I’m learning so much.”

Dawson, the band’s drummer said the longevity of the group could be attributed to the enjoyment they got and they hoped Fraser could add to the mix.

“It’s great to see people who used to follow us around back in the day coming back all these years later and bringing their own kids,” Dawson says.

“The nerves are always there before you start because you’re not sure how people will respond but I’m gaining plenty of confidence.”

Rock of Ages

By Jacob PageMarlborough’s desire for two

colleges on one green field site has been made clear by the submission numbers.

A letter was presented on Mon-day night to Marlborough Boys’ College board chairman Tony de Reeper, principal Wayne Hegarty, and also Marlborough Girls’ College board chairman Bernie Rowe and principal Ka-ren Stewart outlining education minister Hekia Parata’s stance.

The letter stated the ministry would prepare a report on the feasibility of a green field site

with Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ colleges side-by-side.

The move clearly has the major-ity of support in the Marlborough community of the more than 600 submissions received.

More than 63 per cent of people supported the colleges’ stance, while less than 10 per cent wanted the status quo and 26 per cent wanted one purpose built co-educational College.

De Reeper praised the ministry for listening to the community

on the hot button topic but was quick to point out that the latest move was not a guarantee that they would get their way in the long-run.

The potential stumbling block looks likely to be the cost which is estimated to be at more than $50 million.

The report should be released by June next year.

De Reeper says the colleges will be in a wait and see mode until the report was released and the next step was known.

By Adam PoulopoulosMarlborough man Mike Milligan’s severe

back injury has made putting socks on dif-ficult, so he has created a machine to help.

The Sockson machine, manufactured in Marlborough by Indac, went on sale earlier this month.

The user rolls their socks onto the machine’s Perspex cups, which are then positioned at an appropriate height for the person to put their feet through.

The whole process is completed while standing.

The machine has been tr ialed in Marlborough, and Mike has attended shows around the world to help him come up with the finished design.

Both regular and compression socks can be used on the machine.

Mike says he has had back trouble most of his life, brought on initially by building and rugby.

However, his inspiration really began

in 2007, when a car crash left him with a broken back.

Unable to put socks on for two years, he began to work on his design.

He says the machine helps not just those with back pain, but also tall or obese people or those with joint problems.

“It’s a very real problem. For those who can’t do it it’s a very hard thing to do.

“Shoes aren’t so bad, but socks go right over the end of the feet.”

He says there is nothing like the product anywhere.

“It’s hard-wearing, very strong and a good-quality product.

“There are lot of aids out there but this is a very serious bit of kit.

“There’s no pressure on the back or hips – you just have to be able to lift your feet about a foot in the air.”

By Adam Poulopoulos A couple who moved to

Blenheim in October have launched a crafts store out of their home.

Sonia Valentine and husband Dave Rausbatch have moved to Blenheim to be closer to family, and launched Valentine Crafts at the start of the month.

The shop, at 1 Whitney Street, sells wool, buttons, needles, crochet hooks and other similar items.

They have arrived from Twiz-el, where they were running Southern Alps Outdoors.

Sonia says the change of busi-ness is not as drastic as it seems.

“Crafts have been involved from the beginning.

“You get either a fishing widow or a hunting widow, and often they need something to do while they’re waiting on the bank.”

She says the shop here will remain crafts-based, and the initial sales through word-of-mouth had been promising.

“I’ve already have comments from people that there isn’t a crochet store in Blenheim.

“One lady’s comment was ‘we don’t have to go to Nelson or Kaikoura any more.”

Sonia says after Christmas, hand-knitted doll clothes will also be available for sale.

Marlborough District Council is seeking feedback on its Draft Marlborough Regional Land Transport Plan 2015-2021 (the Draft Plan). The Marlborough Regional Land Transport Plan is a critical document for the Marlborough District as it underpins all of the District’s road network and transportation planning and investment priorities over the next six years. The Top of the South councils, in partnership with the New Zealand Transport Agency, have collaborated to develop a joint Draft Regional Land Transport Plan that aims to provide our community with an efficient, safe and resilient road network. Section F outlines the specific issues that each of the three councils face in their region and how they intend to deal with these issues. Each council has developed their own

programme of forward works for the next ten years. The Draft Plan also includes the New Zealand Transport Agency’s State Highway programme to provide the complete picture of the works planned over the next six years in the Marlborough District.A full Statement of Proposal (the Draft Plan) can be viewed at the offices of the Marlborough District Council, 15 Seymour Street, Blenheim or on Council’s website www.marlborough.govt.nz.Copies of the Executive Summary of the Draft Plan (including Section F) can be obtained, free of charge, from Council’s District Administration Building, 15 Seymour Street, Blenheim; Marlborough Library, 33 Arthur Street, Blenheim; and Picton Library and Service Centre, 67 High Street, Picton. Council’s Water Supplies PlumbosolventMany water sources used for public water supplies in New Zealand are plumbosolvent. This means that the water is slightly acidic and can dissolve metals such as lead and copper out of brass fittings, if the tap has not been used for a period of time.Council’s water supplies for Blenheim, Picton, Renwick and Havelock are plumbosolvent. The Ministry of Health requires the following notice to be printed six monthly to advise consumers of this:Ministry of Health – Public NoticeSome plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours.Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mug full of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

Memories make ChristmasAmongst the bustle and (I grant you) hassle of Christmas most of us can find a memory that returns each Christmas season. For me it is usually the music which stirs the sentiments and memories of Christmas but I was delighted to enter a business premises last week where I caught the smell of apple and cinnamon which reminded me of a special Christmas I hadn’t thought of in years. For many Christmas’s, before moving to Blenheim, I sang in a small women’s-voices group which performer a lunch-time Christmas Concert annually. It was the very best time of year and when I had the opportunity to perform in a recent concert of Christmas music I could hear the voices of the women I had shared so much music with – and the memories came back as a lovely gift.Creating a memory is not about running yourself ragged preparing ‘super-meals’ or driving yourself to distraction trying to find the perfect gift. It’s about preparing a welcome to family and whoever else may come into your home for that special time of Christmas. You can help someone else create a festive season memory through your warmth & welcome. This is a real gift.Celebrate the whole ‘Christmas thing’ in whatever way is relevant to you but it is how you make other people feel at that time that will remain long after the razzle dazzle.I am very aware that getting the right gift can almost ruin your Christmas so keep it genuine, unique and chosen on the premise that it fits at least one of these criteria – it is useful, it is beautiful or it will have significance - then you should ‘have it nailed’!If we can help you make memorable choices this year call in and enjoy that in-store experience.Happy Festive Season and Best wishes for 2015

The old Seddon dental clinic, which has stood for almost 70 years, has been moved.

The idea for a dental clinic was raised in Seddon in 1941, but the build was delayed by World War Two.

The building was opened in 1946, in the old headmaster’s garden at Seddon School, before being extended in 1969.

It was decommissioned in 2011 as mobile clinics became popular.

The Awatere Playcentre will use the land to extend their grounds.

The building was put to tender, and a private investor in the Lower Dashwood has purchased it.

By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim’s ‘The Bachelor’ Wild Card contestant

says she would go through the same process all over again, even after finishing second in the public vote.

Jacqueline Williams, 29, was one of four wild cards from around the country competing for one spot on the show, to be screened next year.

She says she is grateful for the support the com-munity showed her.

“I’ve had the most amazing support. The whole’s community’s been amazing, and my family the same.

“I think they were more disappointed than I was.”She says applying for the show was a great learning

experience. “A lot of people said I was so brave doing it, but

I’m not really that brave or confident. “If you put yourself in a challenging situation it

helps you to grow as a person.”Jacqueline says she and fellow Wild Card contest-

ant Aimee Thomas hope to apply for the Amazing Race should they get the chance.

Aucklander Lisa O’Loughlin was announced as the winner live on air in Christchurch on Monday morning.

She secured the most votes during the voting period, which began on December 5 and finished on Sunday.

Q My last meal on Earth would be...

Q One of my best holidayswas...

AJuly in Noosaville, six days of family relaxation which meant paddle boarding and kayaking for Finn and I and lots of reading and coffee for Jules.

Q My guilty TV pleasure is...

A The Regular Show, it’s more than just father-son time.

Q I’m inspired by...

A Anyone who does some-thing for someone else without looking to see what’s in it for them.

Q What’s one thing that you’ll never throw away?

My Guild F 50 guitar. It’s been a constant companion since I was 18 and holds masses of memories.

Q Who would you love to have a meal with?

Tom Petty (my music hero).

Q What’s next on your wish list?

A Enough time to get back into playing live music.

Q What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you?

A I only took up cycling 12 years ago.

A Homemade burgers with my family and friends, it’s the company that makes the meal.

AA pair of new tyres for my cyclocross bike so I could continue to enjoy the great rides available around Marlborough.

What would you spend your last $100 on?

When it comes to art, there’s a particularly passionate group belonging to the Marlborough Art Society.

This group of members, including some new faces, will be taking part in a very special exhibition which opens tonight from 6-7pm at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Art Gallery.

Titled ‘Members Exhibition’ it runs until January 25.

Some of the artists involved are Sally Gill, Walter Scott, Pam Sowerby, Prue Matthews, Karen Neal, Sukarlin, Nikki Roberton and Ron Warnes, with each artist putting up around three pieces into the exhibition.

Newcomer and exhibitor Matthew Muir hails from Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf where he ran a community newspaper, art studio and worked as an artist.

Another talented member also hailing from Waiheke Island is Heina Petzold, who will be displaying his unique kiln-fired copper/enamel creations.

Some of the other mediums that people can expect to see are acrylics, oils, watercolours, scratchboard, a painting on a suitcase, copper etchings by Yvonne Jordan and Diana MacMil-lan’s ceramic ‘mussel ropes’.

The exhibition is a cash and carry concept, so the artworks are able to be taken away at the time, and will be replenished as they are sold.

Most artworks are very affordable and range from as low as $50 which would make great Christmas gifts of original artworks.

Unique exhibition opens tonight

In a game that featured two out-standing bowling displays, Renwick beat Wairau on the first innings at Horton Park on Saturday.

Former All Black Leon MacDon-ald’s five-wicket haul restricted Renwick to 84, but young legspin-ner Piers Landon-Lane responded in kind, his 7/27 saw Wairau Valley skittled for 77 in response.

Elsewhere, Celtic scored 201 against Wairau, who ran it down with 204/6.

HARNESS CLUB GETS FINANCIAL BOOST

The Marlborough Harness Racing Club has been given more than $8000 to upgrade its sewerage system at Waterlea Racecourse.

The upgrade is funded by the government which handed out more than $700,000 to race tracks around New Zealand for various improvements.

CRICKET

inbriefSport Merry Christmas SPORTS

TALK ‘Tis the season for gifts, and All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has jumped the gun and decided to open one of his early.

This week he became the first All Black coach to have his con-tract extended beyond a world cup, much to the delight of rugby followers down the country.

Signed through to 2017, Hans-en looks set to continue in the role until the British and Irish Lions tour, regardless of what happens at next year’s world cup.

With a record like his (his team has failed to win only four of the 42 tests he’s been in charge) it’s little wonder he’s been kept on,

but it will be interesting what the public reaction is like if he fails to bring the World Cup home.

It’s also been the week two of our internationals announced they were about to embark on new challenges.

Hansen’s first-five Dan Carter, who’s been injured for most of the season, is getting a lucrative Christmas deal of his own.

French club Racing Metro have reportedly made him an offer which includes a salary of more than $2 million a year to join them after the world cup.

Flying more under the radar was Central Districts batsman

Jamie How, who announced he will retire from cricket at the end of this year’s domestic one-day competition.

He spent five years in and out of the international setup, but his standout performance came in 2008, when he blasted 139 off 116 balls against England in a tied one-dayer in Napier.

It is one of the great innings in our ODI history.

For both codes, the announce-ments start the inevitable player exodus that happens at the end of a World Cup cycle.

If they win and fellow pace-setters Waitakere United Youth fail to beat Auckland City, the Falcons will go one better than last season, when they lost 3-0 to Auckland City in the final.

FOOTBALL

By Adam Poulopoulos The new organiser of the King and

Queen of the Withers race says this year’s event will be sticking to the traditional formula.

The event will be held on Saturday, January 3, starting from the rifle range car park.

Three divisions, the walk, run and

hybrid, will be held, and the same 10 kilometre hill track will be used.

Organiser Peter Mann says this year’s event will be looking to build on last year’s event, which was attended by about 150 competitors and was the most successful since it began in 1977.

“We’re following very much the

same format. We’re always going to keep the same course and time of the day.”

Last year’s event was won by Nel-son’s Simon Leaning, while national squash representative Megan Craig was the first woman home.

For more information visit the Marlborough Harriers website. Megan Craig.

Seven classes will be on show at Eastern States Speedway for the track’s Christmas meet on Sunday.

The Marlborough Saloon Champs will be headlining the event, with the field of 18 containing nine locals, including Paddy North and Rob Flood.

Drivers are coming from as far away as

Christchurch, Cromwell and Westport for the event.

Other classes include the Marlborough Stockcar Champs, production saloons, motocross bikes and both youth and adult ministocks.

The event, beginning at 1pm, is aimed at families, and Santa Claus will be making an

appearance.Speedway committee member David Rennie

says the event also doubles as a dress-rehearsal for the New Zealand Saloon Championship, beginning on January 23.

The saloons will be running in one heat on Sunday, a similar format to next month’s event.
