The Mad Farmer Liberation Front

I love Wendell Berry’s exuberant poem about living

radically, and find his exhortation to “practice

resurrection” to be timeless, though it’s especially

fitting this year since Easter falls on April Fool’s

Day. St. Paul describes us all as “fools for Christ” (1

Cor. 4:10), and so we are. We are people who lose

our lives to find them, and who come not to be

served, but to serve. It is my joy to do this with you

Planning Council Member Installation - February 11, 2018

A very special thank you to Mark Schwarz, who faithfully completed his second term as Planning

Council President in 2017. Mark will continue to serve as Treasurer in 2018.

Thank you Mark! Trinity is so grateful for your time and dedication.

Lay Ministry - January Pocket Change

Dear people of Trinity,

I wanted to thank everybody who donated and keeps on donating items for the Jail Ministry. I

have taken two loads of boxes to Chaplain Christa Fisher who is overwhelmed by the

generosity of Trinity. We’re actively exploring more opportunities for us to take part in the

action of the Jail ministry. I am trying to make our congregation part of the support groups

organized by Chaplain Christa. These support groups are meant to bring people who were

incarcerated and people who can leave the jail during the day through the work release

program together so that they can share their experiences and find a new community to help

them to come back into our society.

Since many of these men and women are homeless or still in jail, we are looking for people

willing to cook meals for these meetings. The idea is to feed people’s bodies and souls by inviting them to

share words and food all together. This is an ongoing project but feel free to reach out to me if you would be

interested in being part of it.

In addition, there are other opportunities to be involved in the Jail Ministry. Pease visit the

website https://sites.google.com/malc-online.org/madison-area-jail-ministry/home or contact me

at [email protected] or 608-370-9125 for more information.

Thank you to all of you for caring about this invisible but essential ministry!

Pick up your Trinity Lutheran Parking Permit

As you all know, we are having continued issues with parking in our church lot. Therefore, we

are going to be watching that more carefully, and having ‘unauthorized parkers’ ticketed, and

perhaps towed. We have orange parking permits for Trinity members and guests in the

Narthex. Please pick one up and put it on your dashboard, especially if you are here during the

week or at hours other than for worship services.

Special Events & Information

2018 Lenten Worship Series

Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

“Lent from the Margins” March 7 – Victim of Violence (Luke 22:50-51)

March 14 – In the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time

March 21 – Flip-Flopper (Luke 23:47)

At these services, we are using the contemporary vespers service, Holden Evening

Prayer by Marty Haugen. There is also time for laying on of hands and anointing with

oil for healing. (Note: We are not having Lenten meals on Wednesday evenings this

year.)

On Sundays during the season of Lent, we are using liturgical pieces by Middle

Eastern composers, primarily by Yusuf Khill (b. 1931), who was the director of music

at the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. The church is built on the site of what was believed to have

been Mary’s home, where she was visited by the Angel Gabriel. In worship we are singing the Kyrie, Holy,

Holy, and Lamb of God from Mr. Khill’s “Mass of the Holy Family,” which he wrote in Nazareth.

Nazareth is known as “the Arab capital of Israel.” Its citizens are 69% Muslim

and 31% Christian. The musical setting of the Lord’s Prayer we are using

throughout Lent was written by Laila Constantine, a composer from Lebanon. .

Lebanon is the most religiously diverse country in the Middle East, having 54%

Muslim citizens and 41% Christians. Pictured right is an image of a plate from

Lebanon with the Lord’s Prayer printed in Arabic.

The Road Home is Closing the IHN Program

A program that has sheltered homeless families in Madison-area churches and synagogues

since 1999 will end — at least partly because progress is being made finding such families

permanent homes.

The Road Home’s Interfaith Hospitality Network Shelter Program will end this spring.

Trinity is among 13 congregations who take week-long turns hosting as many as 14 people,

or three or four families. Some 40 other “buddy” congregations provide meals and other help to the sheltered.

The Road Home Board members made the unanimous decision to end the program, not because of a lack

of funding, but because of plans by social-service providers and developers for low-cost housing projects, and

also due to a decrease in the number of homeless families.

Summers are always the busiest months for family shelters and TRH is working with Dane County staff

and other shelter providers to see what solutions for bigger capacity issues during a few months a year.

The IHN host and buddy churches have spent much time with TRH staff considering ways that willing

and engaged volunteers might transition into another one of The Road Home programs. Stay tuned for

announcements of opportunities that are coming for us to help.

NOTE:

Trinity has been a host shelter since 1999 and we would like to honor ALL of the Trinity

volunteers who have helped in any way to make this shelter program such a success.

Please notify the church office, Vicki Olson or Kia Conrad, if you have ever helped with

TRINITY LUTHERAN IHN and in what capacity.

Sunday Adult Education Series, The Challenge of Paul, begins April 8

Ever found yourself in church on a Sunday listening to a New Testament reading from one of Paul’s letters and

wondering just what THAT was all about?

On the five Sundays following worship starting on April 8th, there will be an hour-long study and discussion in

the library on The Challenge of Paul. Through brief video presentations and written resource guides, noted

author and biblical scholar Dr. John Dominic Crossan will take us back into the 1St century setting of the

Pauline Letters of our New Testament, challenging us to better understand them and their relevance to us, here

in the 21st century.

The program actually consists of two four-segment sessions following an introductory prologue session. A

schedule for the final four sessions will be determined following completion of the first group. The total

program is as follows:

Theme 1: Paul & Jesus

Prologue In Search of the Historical Paul

Session 1.1 An Appealing or Appalling Apostle?

Session 1.2 How to Read a Pauline Letter

Session 1.3 The Romanization of a Radical

Session 1.4 Jewish Covenant versus Roman Empire

Theme 2: Paul & Luke

Session 2.1 The Future of Roman Christianity

Session 2.2 Vision and Vocation in Damascus

Session 2.3 The Long-Distance Apostle

Session 2.4 The God-Worshipers

Meet Philip Simeon from Unified Cleaning, Trinity’s Clean-

Up Specialist!

Hello Trinity Church members. My name is Philip Simeon. I am the new

custodian at Trinity. I come to you via the beautiful island of St. Lucia, located

in the Eastern Caribbean. I was born and raised in St. Lucia, living near the sea

in the village of Laborie. I spent all my youth days helping my mom, as my

father died when I was 5 years old, leaving seven kids for my mom to raise by herself. I was not able to

continue my education after I was 15, as my mother needed me to help with work. I had to help her with

gardening, working in the country and going to sea fishing.

Eventually I started my own business cultivating, harvesting and processing sea moss, which is a plant that

grows in the sea and is very nutritious. I was married and had three sons. My first wife left me with three young

boys, Sampson, Suneil and Ross. After a few years, I met an American woman who was in the Peace Corps

who lived close to my house on the beach. I fell in love with her and we were married. I then came to America

and now have another son who was born in Madison named Noah.

I am happy to be in Madison and working with the people at Trinity. I love to interact with people and am very

interested in meeting people and sharing stories.

Please stop by and say hello if you see me working at Trinity!

Trinity members are welcome to let Don Huseby, Property Team Chair, or other members of council, know how

the transition to Unified Cleaning for our custodial services is going. Thank you!
