  • Not one dollar donated by Nel-sonians to a man collecting for bowel cancer research is expected to make its way to the intended cause, but to an alleged Austral-ian charity scam instead. The Cancer Research Charitable Trust is currently collecting in Nelson, its financial records show it raised a little over $111,000 for the year ending 2011 and spent it all on wages and expenses with not one dollar being donated to a single charity. The trust is registered with the Charities Commission but an 0800 number on its invoices does not exist, nor does its website. The listed officer of the char-ity, Troy Manhire, has been the target of police investigations in

Australia and is currently under investigation by the Department of Internal Affairs here. Door-knockers for the trust earn up to 40 per cent of the money they collect, a practice deemed to be unprofessional by the Fund-raising Institute of New Zealand. No professional fundraising institute in the world condones relating fundraising fees to the amount raised, says FINZ CEO James Austin. In 2009 Mr Manhire was investi-gated for fraud in South Australia

after he pocketed a salary topping $500,000. The licence of his Cancer and Bowel Research Association and the four trusts it worked with in that state was stripped and only re-instated two years later and under the strict condition that Mr Manhire was not involved in its management in any way, according to a statement by the Office of the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner in South Australia.Mr Manhire was the CEO and chairman of that association but now bases his operation from the Gold Coast and is still allowed to operate in other Australian states and New Zealand. The other officer for his New Zealand trust is a company owned by Mr Manhires wife. The Cancer Research Charitable Trust is still advertising for collectors in the Auckland

area and its coordinator, Neil Armstrong, says collectors earn 25 per cent of what they raise if its under $500 for the week but they can earn 40 per cent of all the money they collect, if donations for the week are more than $1200. Karen Ward, the general manager for the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association, says the trust is not registered with it and their tactics break fundraising regulations and are disturbing.Never should a door-to-door collector ask for cash for one, they should also wear branded clothing and a name badge. The man currently operating in Nelson told the Nelson Weekly hes based in Australia but flies to the South Island each year and collects in its major centres, as well as Wellington. He says all the money that is leftover after ex-penses is given to New Zealand charities.

A further look at its financial records, listed on the Charity Commission website, shows its last donation to any charity was for $20,472 in the year ending 2010. That year the trust collected $239,055 from Kiwis. The year before it raised $343,599 and didnt make one donation, meaning that in its last three annual financial statements the trust collected a total of $694,449 and only donat-ed $20,472, according to those figures.Nelson fundraising expert and member of FINZ, Judene Edgar says that the charitable sector is open to rort as it is relying on the good nature and generosity of people. What this sort of shameful scam does is make peo-ple distrust reputable charities and genuine people and worthwhile causes can miss out as a consequence. If you are at all suspicious or have not heard of a charity before, dont donate, she warns.

    Jackson Harvey, Nelson.

I would expect the major-ity. People are donating to the charity not the people running it.

    Bev Sinclair, Maitai.

I would hope all of it. I would be devastated if it didnt. Theres just so much greed and corruption happening.

    Jane Mitchell, Nelson.

Id like to think 100 per cent but I know its not. I think it should all go definitely.

    Patrick Green, Atawhai.

It is one thing to look for when donating. I would expect 80 per cent at least to go towards what I am donating to.

High pre-school rate great for our kidsNelson has the highest attendance rate for early childhood education in the country, according to new figures released this month. In Nelson, 99.3 per cent of children starting school have attended early childhood education, which is the highest participation rate in the country. Tasman had a rating of 97.3 per cent, which is also above the national average of 95 per cent.National MP Nick Smith welcomed the figures, saying children receiving early childhood educa-tion do better in life. This is one of the greatest investments we can make in the future of our children, he says. Children are able to pick up on their school education more quickly, giving them a head start.Nick says the government was also well aware that its new unit standards for primary school were being better met by children that had gone through early education. As part of improving those results, we are pushing hard to increase participa-tion in early childhood education. His points were backed up by Ant Holder of Paulas Preschool, who officially unveiled the Richmond Academy and its new classroom this month. The academy is designed for four year olds, giving them an earlier taste of education, better preparing them for primary school. Its almost vital these days. With unit standards and the expectations on children once they reach primary school, if they can get a sound base of literacy and numeracy before they get there, then they will be more settled and listen to the teachers instructions, he says. Its basically a

springboard.Nelson Tasman Kindergarten CEO Wendy Lo-gan says early childhood education is important for school starters. Research shows that children who attend ECE are better equipped for school and then for life

in general. The research also shows that the qual-ity of the ECE is important and it has been proven that children get a better start when the ECE is delivered by teach-ers who are all qualified. In fact, this is incredibly important. ECE helps give children the best possible start for their future hopes and dreams.Nick says the most important skills that children develop from these providers

are the interaction, the rules and the routine. Its not my view that our centres should be try-ing to replace those core skills that they learn at primary school, its about preparing them for it, he says.Ministry of Education figures show enrolments for early childhood education increased nation-ally by 2400 between 2011 and 2012.Nick says one of Nationals priorities this term is delivering better public services and it has set a target of 98 per cent of children starting school will have participated in quality early childhood education in 2016.

You wont find a better example of classic kiwi ingenuity than at the trolley derby and spectators who packed out Nelsons Collingwood St werent disappointed, with everything from golf carts to bikes and even prams whizzing past them at high speeds. The annual Robertsons Trolley Derby attracted more than 2500 people who wanted to be a part of what has quickly become a world famous in New Zeland event. President of the Nelson Trolley Club, Tim Bayley says the event ran very smoothly and he was pleased with its success. It was fabulous and I want to say thanks to everyone for such a great day, in par-ticular the residents of Collingwood St, they are amazing for letting us use their street.

With 80 entries into the zoomers, sprint-ers, nippers and rockets categories, the event was almost at full capacity, with keen racers turning out to take a chance at a top spot after a year of preparation says Tim. Some people spend a year working on their trolleys getting ready for the derby. In the weeks leading up to race day recycle centres are bare, picked over for bike tyres, wheels or anything that is round and moves. Its not just about hurtling down a hill at high speed either. Local father Craig Nicholas says half the fun was working on a project with his son, Jason, 12, who

competed in the sprinters class with his road runner inspired trolley. The duo spent half a year building the trolley out of plywood in their garage to get it up to scratch to race in this years derby and Craig says discovering his son was full of ideas was a great lesson to learn. Its great to spend time with your boy out in the garage and its suprising to hear what they have to say.Jason Kroupa says after watching the Kiwi Flyer movie three weeks ago he brought his family down to watch the an-tics unfold. Its been fantastic to watch, weve had a great time.

Supported by Nelson City Coun-cil, these demonstrations will also bring home to drivers the consequences of speed in built up areas and to children the dan-gers of stepping out in front of a moving vehicle. The demonstrations are at various streets in the region. Visit www.nelsoncity-council.co.nz for more information.

Rosey weekend for Stoke flower showDifficult growing conditions throughout the past month has resulted in no Nelson growers being amongst the top awards at the National Autumn Rose Show held at the Stoke Memorial Hall over the weekend, although the events

manager says the turnout was strong.Kelvin Banks praised the number of event-goers but believed local gardeners were unable to match the quality of those from the North Island. Considering the weather weve

had the roses are beautiful, he says. Despite missing out on the major awards, a number of local gardeners picked up wins in the sectional awards, of which there were nearly 50 different categories.

Baby photo started online businessWhen Katie Coursey uploaded a photo to Facebook of her baby son wearing a homemade punk outfit, she had no idea it would lead to a successful business which earns her more than a fulltime job.The 31-year-old Nelson mother of two started Punk Baby Clothing in 2009 after friends began asking if she could make them some of the skull-and-crossbones-inspired clothes Jem, now almost 4, was wearing.Katie set up a business page on Facebook and the niche brand was born. Now clothing sales amount to $60,000 a year, she has 7600 likes translation: a huge following of fans and last year quit her job as a jewellery designer to concentrate on the business. Its pretty amazing. Sometimes I have to think, Whoa, what the hell has happened? She sends off up to 50 packages of clothing each week and is now at the threshold where she must register to pay GST for the business. She already pays income tax.In December Katie hired a seamstress to help sew all the clothes she creates in her kitchen, orders for which come from across New Zealand, Australia and even as far afield as Canada and England. When Punk Baby Clothing began, Katie tried selling the clothes on Trade Me but sales were slow until she switched back to Facebook and began marketing the site. She set up a website but says 98 per

cent of orders still come through Facebook, where a business page is free and interactive.Using social media Katie has collaborated with other sellers to attract more followers. However she says Facebook was fickle. They make changes all the time. I dont put all my faith in Facebook although its been really good to me, anything could happen because its a free service. Her advice for other would-be Facebook entrepreneurs is to stick with something you know. Go with what you like and dont try to ride on anyone elses coat-tails.Employers and Manufacturers Association spokesman Gilbert Peterson says that people who used social media to garner business were innovative and creative. However, the disadvantages included negative comments being posted on your site. You could open yourself to some attack from a competitor. He says the businesses were mostly small, one-person operations and a good way for people to get started before establishing a website.

Q: We have bought our son a cheap car to use to learn to drive in. We are thinking about not insuring it as it isnt worth much. What do you think?

A: I think it is very important that you have at least 3rd party cover for any car you own. This will cover you for damage the car will cause to any property or another car. If you can afford to extend the cover to full insurance or 3rd party, fire and theft, you will be covered for most eventualities. Please make sure your son complies with the conditions of his learners and restricted licences. If he has an accident when breaking these conditions, your car will not be covered by insurance.

Pipe nationals to inject $1.8M into NelsonPipe band fans are in for a treat with over 2000 bagpipers, drummers and their supporters set to descend upon Nelson for two days of contesting in early 2015.The local Celtic Pipe Band based in Stoke secured the right to host the event early this month and pipe ma-jor Bryce Gilchrist says the band couldn't be more excited to be-gin planning for what he describes as "the major event on every pipe band's calender".He says over 50 bands will attend the event, travelling from all over New Zealand, with some even heading over from Australia for the contest."This is a huge event that the Celt-ic Pipe Band is extremely excited about. We are a band full of young

people and have been doing ex-tremely well on the competition front. Hosting the 2015 nationals will give us a great focus."He says the event will bring in an estimated $1.8 million to the local economy and it is well known for attracting a high number of specta-tors. "The bands will be putting out their best performances and it will abso-loutely be a weekend of entertain-ment for the community."The event will be held on March 13 and 14 2015 at Trafalgar Park and the Trafalgar Centre. The Celtic Pipe Band also extend an invitation to all ex band members who would like the opportunity to play in the street march event with the current band members during the 2015 nationals to get in contact.

Murray Campbell allowed visitors in the Blokes in Sheds Trail to check out his model railway set. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

A fundraising tour inside garages owned by local collectors and hobbyists has been deemed a success and will go ahead next year, say its organisers. The Life Education Trusts Blokes in Sheds trail stopped off at ten different locations across the region, showcasing everything from model railways to tea-pot collections.Murray Campbell, who owns the model railway, was happy to open his shed for the fundraiser, especially due to the fact it was relatively unknown to those out-side of the local model railway group. People are loving it, the kids especial-ly. Its the most creative hobby there is. You start with carpentry, followed by track laying which involves electric wir-ing and then the scenery and then the paintings, he says. Murray brought the railway with him when he moved down from Auckland 19 years ago and modelled part of it on the trip from Springfield to Arthurs Pass. The feedback from those attending the event was positive. Gregory Wood says his favourite was the Humphries broth-ers vehicle, bike and truck collection on Quarantine Rd. I think its a fine Kiwi example of hiding in the man cave, he says. The enthusiasm and passion that people have for their hobbies is incred-ible. The craftsmanship is wonderful.Organiser Marg Palmer was happy with the event. We raised $750, which was $750 we didnt have before the weekend. The feedback from everyone was great and Id like to thank the shed owners for supporting this event.

Library clears its shelves of car booksA collection of car and motorcycle books is up for grabs, with the library selling more than 80 books, its entire collection. The Friends of the Library hold sales of cancelled books on the first Saturday of each month at the Elma Turner Library from 10am-12.30pm. But the next one on April 6 will feature books and manuals of mainly older types of cars, ranging from the 1960s through to the mid-90s. They range from the tiny Citroen 2CV and Mini to Holden Commodore and 4WDS, plus motorbikes.Being specialised books they

are of low interest to the general public. And as they dont get borrowed often they take up a lot of space on the shelves, says Jeannie Woodhouse from the Friends of the Nelson Library committee. In many cases the technical information is now available electronically from a database on the Libraries website. The committee is hoping that owners of the car models and car and motorbike enthusiasts may be interested in having their own copies to avoid the library throwing them out. Especially at the bargain price of $2 each, says Jeannie.

New station for Hira Nelsons sole rural fire force is now in its newly-built $235,000 station.

The Hira Volunteer Rural Fire Force station was officially opened last weekend after Nelson City Council stumped up the money to build the new facility which will allow the force more room to train, store gear and relax after fighting fires.

The Hira station is the main port of call for all rural fires in Nelson North and has recently fought fires at Cable Bay and Atawhai. It also attends a lot of car crashes in the region and is the only rural fire force in the Nelson City Council region, with eight in the Tasman district. Principal rural fire officer for the Waimea Rural Fire Authority, Ian Reade, says the

new building is great news for the region. Its a nicer environment to operate out of, gives them some more space and room for future growth. Its a great community asset, its terrific actually. The station was opened by Nelson City councillor Gail Collingwood and Ian says the force is looking for more volunteers. If anyone is keen they can call 544 2441.

An 88 year old world war two veteran is all set to attend the 70th anniversary commemorations for the war in the Pa-cific after he was presented with a set of miniature medals designed for the occasion.Local man Raymond Dunn served in the Royal New Zealand Navy during the war and will travel to New Caledo-nia with a group of more than 120 re-turned servicemen and current mem-bers of the Airforce, Navy, and Army to attend the commemorative service to be held on ANZAC day this year.Barry Pont, Nelson RSA president, presented the miniature set of medals to Raymond at the Nelson Suburban Club on Wednesday night and says the medals are exactly the same as the full set Raymond recieved straight after the war but are designed to be light weight and easier to wear. "The miniature set are usually worn on formal occasions. The full set are very heavy and can be hard to manage."He says the lightweight medals will make it easier for Raymond to man-age while he is away in New Caledonia and that afterwards they can be worn by family members during Anzac com-memorations.Raymond, whose medals include the 3945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Pacific Star, the 3945 war medal and the NZ war medal, says he was pleased to be given the opprotunity to go along but wasn't sure about the fuss being made

about him, a reaction typical of the man described by Barry as 'extremely humble'. "Raymond's been a loyal RSA member for many years. He's what you'd call a salt of the earth man and I'm so pleased he was selected to go this

trip." Raymond was selected by Veteran's Af-fairs NZ to go on the all expenses paid trip and will be flown over to the ser-vice alongside the other attendees in a RNZAF aircraft.

Rain doesn't stop dogs' day in the sunThe weekend's rain did little to dampen the spir-its of even the smallest of dogs, who turned out to support the Nelson SPCA regardless of the down-pour.While numbers were down on previous years more than 60 dogs and their families braved the weather and took part in the inaugral Dogs Day Out held at Isel Park on Sunday. Nelson SPCA manager Don-na Walzl says although the rain was disappointing, she was pleased at how many people came along. "Some people are absolutely drenched but they are still in good spirits and having fun."

Morning rain was the perfect ingredient for a record breaking Muddy Buddy, with 1400 people running through Tasman School and the local estuary completely covered in muck. The annual event, first thought of by Jodie and Nathan Faavae, is the major fundraiser for Tasman School and this weekend it coincided with the schools centenary.Principal Pip Wells says this was the first time it had rained during the race and while it dampened the competitors,

it certainly didnt dampen their spirits. The rain wasnt unpleasant and it was still warm so it worked well with the event, she says. It was a hugely successful event with 1400 contestants and over 700 of those had pre-registered. We only had a 1000 people last year so its majorly up on that.Because families are able to compete together in an active way, Pip says it will continue to be successful. People love dressing up, having a bit of fun, having a laugh and getting exercise at the same time.

While the final fundraising tally had not been calculated, the money will go towards an aspect of physical activity, says Pip. This year one of things were looking at is developing the playground further and making it more challenging for the senior students.Students of Tasman School worked alongside the Department of Conservation and the Tasman District Council to ensure protection of the estuary and students did assignments on the effects the race has on its environment.

    Our locals pick their winners

Swim sensation Sam McKenzie was back in the pool and back in the record books last week, win-ning two national titles and break-ing five regional records at the Na-tional Age Group Championships in Wellington.Sams medal tally included wins in the 13 year old boys 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle, silver in the 50m butterfly and bronze in the 200m freestyle. The two victories followed up his record breaking performance at the Waimea College swimming sports last month, where he broke seven records in all seven events he competed in.Nelson Swimming Club coach Andy Adair has only been in the region for a short time so could not answer whether Sam was the best swimmer the area has seen in the past 20 years, but did say he has the potential to push on and become one of the greatest. Every so often someone walks in the door of your programme who is a very natural swimmer. In this case Im lucky enough to walk through the door of the programme, he says. For some reason this person has a bet-ter grip on the water than all of the

other kids, for some reason he has got a better natural stroke shape than all of the other kids and he can move his limbs quickly. He is amongst the best 13 year old swim-mers Ive seen in my 20 year coach-ing career. But Andy says he is not interested in Sams current talent as he wants him to be a good 23 year old, not a good 13 year old, although an encouraging sign was his improve-ments over the longer distances. Last year he won gold in the 12 year old boys 50m freestyle at the same championship and Andy says strong results in the 200m and a huge personal best in the 400m would bode well for the future as he looks to transition to the longer events like the 400m individual medley. In my opinion that is the most significant thing. He went into the 200m free with a time of 2 minutes 13 seconds and went 2 minutes and 6 seconds in the race. Instead of just being a gifted kid who is fast over 50m, he is now a gifted kid over 50m and 100m and making very strong improvements in 200m and 400m adding work to his tal-ent.

Tennis test for teachersTahuna School students will take part in the Grasshoppers tennis programme this year, but it was their teachers that got the first taste of the action. The teachers underwent the training on Friday afternoon, enabling them to take lessons during physical education time, once the Nelson Bays Tennis programme finished at school. Tahuna is one of four new

schools, along with Appleby, Hira and Central Takaka, now involved in the programme that links school with tennis club and coaches.Grasshoppers in aimed at the ten year olds and under age group. Nelson Bays Tennis de-velopment officer Lynnie Nev-in says there are now 22 local schools involved in the Tennis New Zealand initiative.

Its not technical, its all game based because we want to make this fun for the children to get them hooked on the sport, she says. Hopefully, it will get them interested in tennis and go join a local club. Nelson is one of the strongest regions for Grasshop-pers because there are just so many schools on board.Lynnie says the teachers had a blast playing on Friday.

More than 30 rehomed and retired racing greyhounds are looking for somewhere safe to stretch their legs while they wait for a dog park earmarked by the Nelson City Council to come to fruition. While the greyhounds are no threat to other dogs or people, their love of running at high speeds has their owners looking for somewhere fenced in so they can relax while excersising their pets says Angela Wilson area coordinator for Greyhounds as Pets. While the NCC has a park planned for the next financial year, Angela says the local greyhound community is calling on anyone who may have a paddock or property that they could use in the meantime for their pets. The dogs, which can reach speeds of up to 70km have all been rehomed in the face of certain death by the nationwide organisation, which successfully finds adoptive homes for the animals after their typically young retirement. Unfortunately it normally means they are put down, but we are successfully rehoming them to families who want a kind, gentle and affectionate family pet.

Nelson City Council parks and facilities manager Paul McArthur says a dog park is in the pipeline for all dogs and their owners and an indiciative allocation and significant amount of time is set to go towards a fenced dog park for Nelsonians to enjoy. While greyhounds love to run, Angela says a common misconception is that they

require too much excersise to keep as pets, when in reality they are often called the 70km couch potato. While they love running, they also enjoy curling up on the couch too.Anyone who has a property the greyhounds could use or would like to find out more about adopting a retired racing greyhound can contact Angela on 546 5045.

    Thousands expected for summer fare

The final touches are going on the Sprig & Fern Summer Fare, just days before the successful street party returns to Richmonds Sundial Square. Those supporting, organizing and performing at Fridays event, are ready to celebrate the conclusion of summer with one last get together featuring live music, a wide variety of gourmet food and beverage stalls and childrens entertainment.Sprig & Fern co-owner Tracey Banner, who has held the naming rights for the past few years, says she is happy to continue supporting the event because of its success. Were a Nelson brewery but more importantly were in Richmond and being in Sundial Square its just a stone throw away so its a great thing to support, she says. The entire community really supports it, they may have not seen

each other for 12 months so its always a good chance to catch up, have a beer and a bit of a dance.A rock covers band has been booked for live entertainment and its lead singer says the Summer Fare will be its biggest show to date. Sam Wilson of Repeat Offenders described it as our Wembley and says the band was really looking forward to performing at such a successful event, and one they can bring their kids along to. We havent performed at anything like this and were quite excited about it, says Sam. The Sprig & Fern Summer Fare is organized by Richmond Unlimited and runs from 5:30pm until 10pm. Entry is free and there are spot prizes that will be handed out throughout the night, although the medieval dress-up competition is not running this year.

From front left: Helen Andrew, Marion Holtham, Sandra Edridge Eleanor Duncan and Aileen Sturrock.

It took a lot of searching, but these former marching girls have proved to be the final pieces of the puzzle that Eleanor Duncan has spent the last year trying to solve. It all came together for Eleanor over the weekend, who held a reunion for the Ta-merlanes, a 1950s Nelson champion march-ing group who had since lost touch. After an article published in the Nelson Weekly in September last year missing members were encouraged to come forward and the team managed to track down the final 29 Tamer-lanes marchers to join in the celebration.Eleanor says attendees at the reunion came from near and far to be at the event, with some travelling from Auckland, Hamilton, Waikanae and Timaru as well as 17 more who were still living under the radar in the Nelson region. While she says it was a lengthy process find-ing contact details for the missing members, the positive reaction she received from each person when they were found was encour-aging and gave her and co-organiser Ruth Parker the push they needed to see the pro-ject through. We found people through talking to many people, someone who knew someone who knew something helped us get there. The last person on our list was only found two weeks ago and she was very pleased and surprised to be found. The Tamerlanes spent the weekend remi-niscing and while a leisure marching display was cancelled due to wet weather, Eleanor says the weekend was extremely satisfying. It was great fun becoming reacquainted with women we knew more than 50 years ago, thank goodness for the name tags. After a farewell coffee on Sunday, the local ex marchers vowed to get together in the future at least once a year and keep in contact with those who live elsewhere says Eleanor.

Rain is here, are you happy about it?So stoked to finally see some rain. The sports fields are like concrete.

    (Via text).

I have been loving the sunshine, but my garden will welcome the

    rain. Vibeke Friis.

Love the sun, but we desperately need rain... bring it!

    Bridget Hobden.

Silly question, been enjoying the sun of course but fire danger as it is

how could rain not be welcome? Jacqueline Gibson.

I welcome the rain. But next week Miss 12 is on school camp in Nydia

Bay, Miss 11 will be delivering the Nelson Weekly with me. So Monday, Wednesday and Thursday can have steady rain. Andrea Grocott.

I have absolutely loved this summer, best thing since

sliced bread. We have not had a decent summer for so many years, but we need the rain to ease this drought over the country. Nicky Williams.

Would love some rain but not on Sunday 24th - the

Awesome Tahunanui School gala is on! Tracey Hughes.

OMG bring on the rain! My paddocks need it as do

    us and my horses!Jewels Mckenna.

Orca swimmer:Gosh, did the whales mind? If he was any threat

he would have got attacked from the mother but obviously they didn't mind! If I could swim confediently in the sea it would be amazing and as he said 'scary exciting etc...' I think its great a young lad is getting his kicks out

of enjoying nature rather than being a real criminal hurting people or stealing etc. So mixed feelings here, understand we have to protect our whales, but hey he was hav-ing a whale of a time. Helen (via nelsonweekly.co.nz).

This lads once in a life time experi-ence broke the law which is to pro-

tect the whale. Does everyone from your home town only think of themselves? A future profession in marine biology I think not. FlaFu (via nelsonweekly.co.nz).

David Hill is leaving the Richmond Mall, have you enjoyed shopping there, or do you still prefer Nelson's CBD?

Richmond Mall... if it had the Warehouse I wouldnt ever need to

shop in town at all!! Rachel Thompson.

Nelson CBD by far. Prefer buying local and there's more of that there.

    Jacqui Irwin.

Would be great if Hoyts could go on top off the mall and better shops

for the teenagers, the mall is boring too many shops the same. Bonita Wilkinson.

CBD, but the mall is looking good. Aquistions, love that shop!!

    Louise Armstrong.

David is a very good manager and Tauranga is lucky to get him. The

Mall is convenient and has some good en-tertainment for school holidays and other occasions. Wishing David all the best for his new job and future. Janice Mortensen.

Weet-bix Tryathlon:Thanks for the photos of the kids tryathlon on your website they look

cool and you even got my kid! (Via text).

Ring for Olympian:Well done Glen [James] on mak-ing that ring for Lisa Carrington. I

hope you got her number while you were at it. (Via text).

Teachers protest Novopay:My mother only just got paid for the first time for the year today.

    Samantha Gentry.

I think it's pretty rude how Tal-ent2 are going to be sending in the

debt collecters to recover the money from teachers/support staff who have been over-paid, yet teachers/support staff are unable to do anything about not being paid. Mel Ricketts.

They should all refuse to work. Bet they'd fix it real quick. Angel Sinn.

Drinking and driving law won't change:This should never have been pubi-cised as I'm sure most people, like

me, would've thought it was illegal. Be best if most people do still think that! Tania Brunell.

Race Unity Day:Is there any way that Race Unity Day can be re-scheduled for an-

other date? Can't believe it has been rained off for a second year - all that hard work rehearsing etc! Bee Sparkles.

Current GenerationGoing solar what is the pay-back? Whats the return on us-ing solar energy to power your home? This is one of the first questions that you ask when considering a grid-tie solar sys-tem.Solar energy is a source that will supply electricity, long term, with no continuous financial input, no environmental impact and its an exciting investment!A grid-tie solar system offers immediate savings on your electricity bill, a capital value increase on your property and the benefits of creating your own power for

your own home in the face of the constant rise of energy costs.During the day, when your grid-tie system is creating power, you use free power,

saving what you would have normally

paid to your power company and re-ducing your electricity bill. Any

extra power you make above what you use is bought back by your electricity provid-er. To give you an idea on what you could save for a 3.2 kW grid-tie solar sys-tem, installed, currently

costs from $11,000 and will produce, around

4,256 kWh of electric-ity each year. With cur-

rent electricity prices of $0.27 per kWh this means

direct electricity savings of $1,150.00 per year. Can you afford not to go solar? Talk to Current Gen-

eration and find out how you can save with solar energy.

Can PlanOne of the worst places we can dispose of garden waste is at the dump, but people filling local land-fills with garden off cuts now have a safer and more environmentally friendly option when it comes to getting rid of greenery from back-yard clear outs.GreenBin, a Can Plan initiative is the first regular fortnightly ser-vice of its kind for Nelson as up until now people have had to mix in their garden waste in with their general household waste or use other limited services.

Green waste is worse than plastics or oth-er recyclables when placed in a landfill, it gives off harmful greenhouse gases that leach into the surrounding environment.Composting garden waste is the best thing we can all do to look after our environ-ment and CAN PLAN have made it easy with their new greenBin. Theyll take it to Greenwaste to Zero for composting so your waste ends up being used to improve the environment, not harm it.

Nelson City CouncilThe Nelson City Council has a few tips on how to keep your fire burning with good wood this winter. When it comes to wood, you need to burn it right and stack it right to get the best heating result, value for money and look after the environment. Before you throw a log on the fire this winter, make sure you clean your chimney to prevent chimney fires and make your burner run better. Get a hot fire going quickly

with plenty of paper and small kindling and make sure you are only burning seasoned and dry wood that con-tains less than 25% moisture. Burning wet wood is illegal, expensive, bad for your burner, and bad for your health so ask for a mois-ture meter check when your wood is delivered.Dont be tempted to burn rubbish, plastics, glossy paper, treated or paint-

ed wood as these release toxic chemi-cals and dont bank up the fire overnight a slow smoulder-ing fire creates lots of extra smoke and does not keep the room any warmer than burning the wood efficiently. When it comes to stacking, split your wood first and open stack it in a criss-cross pattern for maximum air circu-lation. Ventilation and warmth are more important than cov-er, so cover the top but not the whole pile.Keep seasoned but rain wet wood inside to dry out for a couple of days before burning and re-member its better to buy more wood than you think you will need you can always use it next year.
