Term 1 Week 4 18th February 2020
From the Principal
2020 Organisation
We have had a very busy yet smooth start to the year and have
welcomed a number of new families to Rooty Hill Public School. Our
enrolment numbers currently sit at approximately 600 students. We have
formed 24 mainstream classes as well as 1 IM class. Students and
teachers have enjoyed getting to know one another over the past week.
It has been wonderful to see students making new friendships and reconnecting with old
friends both in the classroom and in the playground.
Meet the Teacher Night
Thank you to the many parents, families and carers who attended the Rooty Hill Public
School annual Meet the Teacher night. Over 200 parents/carers attended. It was
wonderful to speak with you and to answer any questions. A big thank you must go to Mrs
De Rosa for her organisation of the event and to all of the outstanding staff at Rooty Hill
Public School who gave up their time to meet with families. The dedication and
commitment of staff to build positive partnerships with parents from the beginning of the
year is exceptional. This year our Year 6
student leadership team played an important role
on the night, speaking with parents and
administering a survey on our school iPads. We
are very lucky to have such wonderful staff,
students and parents at Rooty Hill Public School
who work in partnership to support students to achieve their personal best.
Parent Survey and Newsletter Update
Thank you to the 88 parents who completed our parent survey administered by our
student leaders at the Meet the Teacher evening. If you missed out on completing the
survey, please access the link provided in the school app.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/rhpst1
In addition, the Year 6 student leaders will be administering the survey on iPads in the
playground each morning and afternoon over the coming weeks.
Information gathered informally and through the survey will assist us in providing accurate
information to the Rooty Hill Public School community. We are currently trialling a digital
newsletter which has the option to translate to over 100 languages using Google Translate.
The digital newsletter allows everyone in our community to access the outstanding work
of Rooty Hill Public School students and staff. We look forward to hearing your feedback
regarding the digital newsletter.

Rooty Hill High School Excellence Assembly
On Friday 7 February I had the pleasure of attending the Rooty Hill High School Excellence
Assembly with our two school captains. Vivian, Joaquin and I were extremely impressed
with the level of excellence demonstrated at the high school assembly. Students and staff
excelled in all areas and I felt so proud of the outstanding
work that our ex-students, colleagues and families of Rooty
Hill High School have achieved. After the assembly we had
time to meet with award recipients, including past students
of Rooty Hill Public School. Ex-student, Aiden, provided
Vivian and Joaquin with insightful tips on leadership, high
school and how to enjoy their final year of primary school. It was wonderful to see many
Rooty Hill PS parents in attendance. What a proud day of excellence for the Rooty Hill
community.
School Drop Off and Pick Up
It’s easy to forget how unpredictable children can be. Before and after school they are
excited about seeing their friends or their parents and can easily forget how to keep
themselves safe near traffic. As adults it’s our responsibility to be extra aware when
driving around schools, especially at time when children might be about.
We ask for your assistance by doing the right thing every time whether you are just
driving through the area or are involved in dropping off or collecting children from school.
We all need to work together to keep children safe as they travel to and from school.
Before and After School
In the mornings, supervision of students occurs from 8.25am until the bell rings at
8.55am. If your child needs to be at school before 8.25am please see the before and after
school care staff to discuss current availability. Parents and students are reminded to
leave the area between the hall and the community room (before and after school care
building) free before and after school each day.
Busways helps our kids get to Stewart House
We’d like to thank Busways who is once again provided free bus transport for selected
children from Rooty Hill Public School to travel to the fabulous Stewart House School
2020 health and education camp at Curl Curl Beach over the past two weeks.
As a family-owned, Australian company with roots in western Sydney, Busways values
being part of the local community, and has happily supported Stewart House for over 25
years. They are kicking off this new decade by donating another $1,600 in in-kind bus
services to make the camp more accessible in 2020.
“It’s great to know that we are helping primary and secondary students from the Mt
Druitt and Minchinbury School districts, who otherwise would not be able to enjoy a
coastal holiday,” said Busways managing director Byron Rowe. “Every Australian child, no
matter what their circumstances, should be able to enjoy a classic Aussie beach holiday
and wiggle the sand between their toes.”
Stewart House School is a NSW Department of School Education facility that provides a
free ten-day holiday by the sea at Curl Curl for selected students in government schools.
The school is only able to operate thanks to the generosity of the local community.
We’d like to thank everyone who is supporting this initiative and we hope the kids had a
very happy time away.

Please keep this in mind...
You will have heard the news regarding Novel Coronavirus on the television, radio,
internet or social media. While this news can be upsetting for many people it is important
that we work together to support those who have been in the impacted areas. It is also
very important that we don’t assume people who have a Chinese or other Asian
background are linked to the spread of the Novel Coronavirus. Anti-Asian language and
behaviour, or any other form of racism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our
school community.

Year Six Rooty Hill High School Visit
On Thursday 13th February Year 6 students had the opportunity to visit Rooty Hill High
School. The day began with introductions to key staff members in the high school
including; Ms Vuki, Ms Andrews and Ms Taylor (Year 7 2021
adviser). The students were then addressed by the Senior
Leaders.
Following this they watched a video that demonstrated
excellence as it occurs at Rooty Hill High School. Prior to their
visit, Year 6 had prepared a range of questions to ask current
students. Questions ranged from ‘What do you sell at the
canteen?’ to ‘What extracurricular opportunities do you
offer?’
Students were then led on a guided tour of the school. They
were able to see what it looks like inside the classrooms and
the different kinds of subjects they can participate in. It was
fantastic to see Year 6 so excited by what lies ahead of them as they begin to make their
transition to Year 7.
Mrs Jones
Meet the Teacher Thank you for all those parents who came to our Meet the Teacher evening, even though
it was a rainy afternoon. It was lovely to put a face to a name and share what Rooty Hill
Public School has to offer. It was great to see parents signing up to
volunteer for different events at the school. We are grateful for
those who have the time to help us out. Thank you also for taking
the time to complete the survey as this information is invaluable for
us to keep you all informed.

Changes to Home Reading
In 2020 Home Reading will be yearly based instead of term based. The children will complete cards that have 0 to 210 nights Home Reading. Each card will have 30 nights on them. When a card is completed they hand the card to Ms Chapple who will give the next card to them. The table below will explain what they will receive at each level of completion.
