Week 8:T

The Battle Hymn of the Republic Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord,

He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored. He hath loosed the fateful lightening of his terrible swift sword,

His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never sound retreat.

He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat. Oh be swift, my soul, to answer him, be jubilant, my feet,

Our God is marching on! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me.

As he died to make men holy, let us live to make men free, While God is marching on! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

Nevada - The Silver State

Nevada in Spanish means “snow-covered.” When Spaniards first came to Nevada, they were impressed with the area’s gleaming snow-capped mountains. Nevada is known as the Silver State because of the rich resources of silver found there. The 2006 Nevada state quarter features the state nickname, along with wild mustangs, sagebrush, and a sun rising over mountains.

Did you know? Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) moved to Nevada in 1861. It was while working at the Territorial Enterprise, a newspaper, that he began to use the penname of Mark Twain. (“Mark twain” is a riverboat term for a depth of two fathoms, or 12 feet.)

In 1859, the Comstock Lode was discovered in Nevada. This was a gigantic silver deposit that was named after Henry Comstock, a miner and the original owner of the property. He sold the mine, not realizing that it was so valuable. The discovery brought prospectors to the state. Today Nevada leads the nation in silver and gold mining.

Prospectors often used burros, or donkeys, as pack animals in the mines. Nevada is home to the nation’s largest wild burro population.

Hoover Dam is a man-made Nevada wonder. It is 726 feet tall! Lake Mead was formed when the dam was built along the Colorado River near the Nevada-Arizona border. It is the largest man-made lake in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Hoover Dam is important because it provides farmers with much-needed water for crops and livestock. It also provides flood control, as well as electricity for people living in Nevada, California, and Arizona. The dam was completed in 1936 and named after President Herbert Hoover.

Gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931, during the Great Depression, and it is a major source of revenue for the state. The three biggest gambling towns are Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. When most people think of Nevada, they think of Las Vegas. It is a city of neon signs, gambling, numerous weddings every day, and lots of live entertainment.

Nevada is known for its live entertainment, but one particular Nevada entertainer was a little out of the ordinary: Bertha the elephant. This famous pachyderm performed faithfully for 37 years at John Ascuaga's Nugget casino in Sparks, Nevada, near Reno. Bertha lived to the ripe old age of 48.

Kangaroo rats in Nevada’s deserts have the special ability to go through life without drinking water. Their bodies convert water from seeds. Amazing!

The federal government owns most of Nevada. The land is used by the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, National Park Service, National Forest Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Nevada is famous for its “ghost towns,” or abandoned towns that were once mining communities.

Virginia City, Nevada, hosts the International Camel Races every year. Camels were used in Nevada in the 1800s to help miners carry supplies.

Nevada is the driest state in the nation. Average rainfall for Nevada is nine inches.

History In 1861, two years after a huge silver deposit was discovered in Nevada, this area became a territory. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln needed three votes to outlaw slavery. He suggested making Nevada a state, which would secure the votes needed. His idea became a reality in 1864 when Nevada became the 36th state. For this reason, Nevada was called the Battle Born State.

Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Luke 6:27-28 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mis-treat you.” Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

The Star-Spangled Banner

Oh say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last

gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright starrs, through the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming. And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream.‘Tis the star-spangled banner, O long may it wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when free men shall stand,Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation.

Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n-rescued landPraise the Pow’r that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,And this be our motto, “In God is our trust!”

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

-Francis Scott Key (written during the War of 1812)

Minnesota - Land of 10,000 Lakes

Minnesota’s name comes from a Dakota Indian word that means “sky-tinted water.” Minnesota is dotted with more than 10,000 lakes, which is why it is commonly called the Land of 10,000 Lakes. (According to legend, the many lakes in Minnesota were formed by Paul Bunyan’s footsteps!) The state’s quarter, issued in 2005, features a lake scene with the shape of Minnesota and the nickname Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Did you know? Judy Garland, who starred as Dorothy in the 1939 movie classic The Wizard of Oz, was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, on June 10, 1922. Her name at birth was Frances Ethel Gumm.

The Mississippi River begins in Minnesota. Legend says that the river started when Paul Bunyan tipped over his washtub! The river flows over 2,300 miles down the middle of the country and eventually dumps into the Gulf of Mexico.

St. Paul and Minneapolis are known as the Twin Cities. The twins are on either side of the Mississippi River. It is an active metropolitan hub of commerce, industry, and transportation. The St. Paul-Minneapolis Mall of America, the nation’s largest shopping center, attracts people from far and wide. Besides shopping, visitors can ride an indoor Ferris wheel or roller coaster.

The northern portion of the state is heavily forested, making lumber a major industry there. Legends of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox originated from this area.

Many northern Europeans, known as Scandinavians, settled in Minnesota. They brought their customs and traditions with them from Europe.

Patrick J. Towle of St. Paul, Minnesota, invented low-cost maple syrup. He called his product Log Cabin in honor of Abraham Lincoln. His economical topping for pancakes and waffles used maple and cane sugar syrups.

The Hormel Foods Corporation, makers of SPAM, is located in Austin, Minnesota.

Minnesota is famous for its cold weather, snow, and ice. The Winter Carnival in St. Paul features many fun—but cold—contests, like the ice sculpture exhibits. Minnesota’s cold weather allows for ice skating—and ice hockey. The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is there.

The Mayo Clinic, a well-respected medical establishment, is in Rochester, Minnesota. The clinics began when the Mayo family of doctors responded to a tornado disaster in their hometown of Rochester in 1883. The clinic has opened other hospitals around the country.

Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota, near Mound (a suburb of Minneapolis) is the birthplace of Tonka Trucks. The play trucks are well constructed and have become collectibles among adults.

Minnesota has other popular nicknames, like the North Star State, the Gopher State, and the Wheat State.

History Britain gained control of eastern Minnesota from France after the French and Indian War. It was not until after the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 that the United States controlled the entire region of Minnesota. Minnesota became a U.S. territory in 1849.

During the middle 1800s, European settlers and Indians began to disagree over the land. In 1862 the Indians attacked many of the white settlers. Their leader was Chief Little Crow. The U.S. military forced the Indians to move west.
