➻ It’s not every day that theCEOs and HR heads of the
top 100 companies to work for inIndia assemble in the same halland get felicitated for their bestpractices. And so it goes withoutsaying that the awards ceremonyculminating India’s BestCompanies to Work for Study2015 was a truly star-studdedevent that the attendees will
remember for a long time tocome. Providing a backgroundabout the event, PrasenjitBhattacharya, CEO, Great Placeto Work Institute said, “From 120,the number of participatingcompanies went to 708 this year.It is the largest study of thisnature and this year, we had over25 NGOs participating, some ofwhom made it to the list as well. The largest participation camefrom IT (25%), followed by
manufacturing. Trust pride andcamaraderie – these are the threemain factors that set the bestcompanies apart from the rest. Inthe course of our study, werealised that employees don’tcare all that much about HRprocesses! But we did see thatperceptions about the company atthe junior level are usually on alower side.”
The host for the event, VikramPoddar kept things lively with his
humorous anecdotes andobservations about HR andcorporate life. One remarkabledevelopment was the increase inthe number of hospitalitycompanies in the list of bestcompanies to work for. Also, thedifferentiators included bothtangible and intangible factors.
Thus the event served as agreat platform to recognisecompanies which are going theextra mile for their employees.

“Having part-nered withThe Great
Place to Work Institutein 2007, we have beendoing this for seven toeight years now andwe’ve found that thebest companies to workfor are those that canharness talent betterthan their competitors. The leadership, cultureand systems andprocesses that drivethat culture; these arethe factors that make adifference. People inherently
want to feelinvolved intheir work”
S RAMADORAI,adviser to the PM of
India in the NATIONALCOUNCIL ON SKILL
DEVELOPMENT
“People inherently want to feelinvolved in their work andfeel that they are contribut-
ing meaningfully. As companies, it isour duty to provide this opportunity tothem. Jamshedji Tata once said that ina free enterprise, the community is notjust a stakeholder but the very purposeof its existence. I am happy to see that alot of companies are doing much morethan what the CSR clause in the Compa-nies Act mandates. However, skill devel-opment is a challenge for our youth andwe have to address it through public-private partnerships. Ensuringthat there is no asymmetry between thesupply and demand of manpower iseasier said than done and the measure-ment is purely in terms of the numberof jobs created. India has been recognised as the IT destination of theworld and the sector has created over 10 million direct and indirect jobs.”
