AfterfinishingherdegreeineconomicsandinternationalpoliticsattheUniversityofWarwick,NikistartedherworkingcareerasaCharteredaccountant.Afteraseven-yearcareerinfinancialservices,shelefttoworkinanenvironmentwithmoreheartandmeaning,andinaway,shecouldmoredirectlyhelpandserveothers,andwe’reverygladshedid.

We'regoingtobetalkingtodayaboutemotionaltraumaandhowthataffectsyourenergylevelsandyourstresslevelsandgivethelistenerssometipsaboutusingbioenergeticstoaddressemotionaltraumainsuchaprofoundway.Imean,forme,usingbioenergeticshashelpedmeimprovemyemotionallifeandreleasetraumainwaysIdidn'treallyexpect.Asaresult,todayI'msomuchhappierandjustsomuchclearerandmorefocused,andjusthavemoreenergyand,justgenerally,ahappierperson.Let'stalkabouthowimportantisstressandemotionaltraumainmaintainingabundantenergy?

NikiGratrix: It'ssuchanimportantaspect.Emotionaltrauma,Ibelieve,especiallyemotionaltraumafromchildhood,isprobablythemostunderexposedfactorforprobablyallchroniccomplexillnesstoday.Theposterchildadultillnessesrelatedtoemotionaltraumaarefatigue-relatedillnesses.Forexample,ifyouhaveahighleveloftraumainchildhood,youhaveasixfoldincreasedriskofdevelopingillnesseslikechronicfatiguesyndromeandfibromyalgia,andtherearehugestudies.IalwaystalkabouttheAdverseChildhoodEventStudy,astudyofover17,500adultsdonebytheCDCandKaiserPermanente,whichshowedthatifyouhadveryhighlevelsofadversechildhoodevents,youhaveanincreasedriskofsevenoutofthetop10causesofdeath.Withtrauma,we'retalkingaboutthingslikeparentsseparatingindivorce,physical,sexual,oremotionalabuse,physicaloremotionalneglect,thingslikedomesticviolence,substanceabuse,mentalillnessinthefamily,orincarcerationbyfamilymember,forexample.Inthatbigstudy,67%ofalladultshaveexperiencedatleastoneofthosethings,thattheyfoundinthestudy.Thatwasalsoanunderestimate.Theyignoredthingslikeaskingaboutwhetheryou'vebeen...Maybeyou'veexperiencedbullying,ormaybeyouhadatraumaticbirth,forexample,ormaybetherewasfinancialtraumainchildhood,aswell.Also,weinherittraumainter-generationally,andthat'sproveninthescience,aswell.Youcanlookbackatyourownchildhoodandnotnecessarilyhaveanything,butwhataboutyourparentsorgrandparents?Forexample,thirdgenerationsurvivorsoftheHolocaustvictimshavethesamephysiologicalandpsychologicalexpressionastheirgrandparentswhowereintheHolocaust.That'sfoundinallpartsoftheworld,wherethere'sbeenwarorfamine.You'llseeitgodownsevengenerations.That'sahugefactor,andalsothere'sahugeamountofwhatwecallsilenttrauma,whichiswherepeoplearenot

Well,ifyouwere,A,howdoyouknow,becausehowdoyouknowhowyourparentsorcaregiversweremeanttobehave?Especiallyemotionalneglect,wheretheveryessenceofthatispeoplearedisconnectedfromtheirownemotions,sotheywouldn'tknowthatthey'dbeentraumatized,and50%ofalladultshaveattachmenttrauma,whichisanotherhugestudy,aswell.Really,thebottomlineiseverybodyisaffectedbyadversityinchildhood.Thatsetsusupforhowwe'regoingtorespondtotheinevitablestressesinadulthood,aswell.Inchildhood,ifwehaveadversity,itaffectsourresiliencetotraumafortherestofourlives.We'lltalkaboutthatwhenwetalkaboutmechanisms,butjustafewotherstatistics,aswell.IfyouhaveahighlevelofACEs,youhavetripletheriskofheartdiseaseandthreeandahalf...sorry,tripletheriskoflungcancerandthreeandahalftimestheriskofheartdisease.Ifyouhavesixadversechildhoodevents,ACEs,aswecallthem,youhaveareducedlifespanof20years.ThisisallfromthishugeCDCstudy.IfyouhadjustfourACEs,youhavea400%increaseofdevelopingdepressioninadulthood,andAlzheimer's.YouonlyhavetohavetwoACEstohave100%increasedriskofautoimmunity.Ijustdidaninterviewrecently,whereIdidabitofresearchandfoundoutyouonlyneedacoupleofadversechildhoodevents,andyouhaveatwofoldincreasedriskofhavingmajordepressionduringmenopause.Itjustgoesonandon.It'severything.It'smentalhealth.It'sillnessesthatarefemale-dominantillnesses.It'scancer.It'sheartdisease.It'severything.Thebottomlineisjustsaying,thereisanemotionalcomponenttoeveryailmentandillness.Allofuspractitionersneedtobeaddressingthat,andanybodywhowantseithertobesuperchargedorespeciallyifyouhavefatigue,youhavethissixfoldincreasedriskofdevelopingfatigueinadulthoodwithemotionaltraumainchildhood.It'sthemostunderexposedriskfactor.I'dsayit'sprobablymoreimportantthantoxins,buttheyusuallygotogether.Theyusuallygotogether.Oneofthese...Ishouldjustsay,it'snottruetosaythatsmokingcauseslungcancer.It'sacontributingfactor,becausetherearepeoplewhosmokeallthetimeanddon'tgetlungcancer,right?It'sahugecontributingfactor,andthat'showtoconsideradversityandunresolvedtraumaandemotionaltrauma.It'soneofthesehugecontributingfactors,butyounormallyneedsometoxinsthrownin,andwhat'shappeningis,andwe'lltalkaboutmechanismsaboutwhattraumadoestothebody,butitreducesyourabilitytodetox.Itsuppressesyourimmunity.Itdoesallthesethingsthatthensetyouupforreactingwithillnesstothetriggerinadulthood.Thatcouldbeamicrobialtrigger,itcouldbeanotheremotionaltrigger,oritcouldbeatoxictrigger,ifthatmakessense.

Niki: Yeah,sohowdoeschildhoodautobiographybecomeadultbiology?ThesehugestudiesbytheCDCandKaiserPermanentetriggeredsomemajorresearch.Oneofthethingsthattheyfoundisessentiallyit'salltodowiththisHPAaxis,thehypothalamicpituitaryadrenalaxis,andit'saboutthestressresponses,thisfight/flightresponsethatwehavetostressorsintheenvironment.Whathappenswhenwehaveeitheraone-offshockorwehavethisintermittentbutchronicstress,likebeingaroundanunpredictableparentconstantly,whathappensisthat...They'reactuallycallingit,itkindlesthebrain,whichmeansittriggersthebraintogetstuckinachronicstressresponse,eveniftheexternalstressistakenaway.Wehaveareducedthresholdofwhattriggersastressresponseinus,inresponsetoastress,andthewholesystem'sreset,sowearemoreresponsivetostress,andwehaveahigherstressresponseforlonger,sincethedaythetraumahappened.Essentially,oneresearchersaidthat,oronesciencewritersaid,it'slikethechildismarinatingininflammatorycytokinesallthewaythroughsincethattimetherewasareset,becauseweknow,whentheHPAaxisgetstriggeredintoachronicstressresponse,allthesebiologicalchangestakeplace,whicheventuallyleadtoincreasedinflammation,and,ofcourse,inflammationisobviouslycorrelatedwithsomanychroniccomplexillnesses.Whenwetalkaboutanillnesslikeautoimmunitybeingtrigger,wellactuallyitmayhavestarted20yearsearlier,whenthissystemresethappened.Weknow,oneofthemostrobustfindingsinthescienceofpsychoneuroimmunology,wheretherearehugepaperslookingatthismind-bodyHPAaxisconnection,isthatemotional,negativeemotions,trauma,andsoonsuppressesimmunity.It'soneofthebasicunderstandingsofpsychoneuroimmunology.We'vegotsuppressedimmunity.We'vegotbeingstuckinthechronicstressresponse,increasedinflammatorycytokines.Itchangesourgut,sowhenwehavetraumainchildhood,studieshavebeendone,wheretheytook...Withmammals,theywouldseparatethemotherandthebaby,recreatingattachmenttrauma.Itchangestheintestinalpermeability.Itchangesthegutcolonization.Whenyou'restuckinchronicstress,itreducesyourdigestiveenzymes,soyou'renotdigestingproperly.Inessence,whenthesystemresethappens,youarelessinthestateoftheparasympatheticrest,digest,detoxify.You'reinthestressfight/flightresponse,soallofthatrest,digest,detoxifyaspectgetsdown-regulated.You'vegot,worst,you'renotdetoxifyingandyou'renotdigestingproperly.That'sthefoundationofillness,right?

Wendy: ThatsoundedaboutlikemebeforeIstartedNESlastyear,aboutayearago.

Niki: Yes,soit'sthemajorimpact.That'sonewayitactuallyisworkingtochangethebiochemistry.Traumaalsoaffectsourbehavior,soit'sworthmentioningthatthesebigstudies,theKaiserPermanente/CDCstudyactuallystartedinanobesityclinic,andtheyfoundout...TheyhadthisobesityclinicinKaiserPermanente,anditwasforpeoplewhowerequiteseriouslyobese.Theywereonthisprogramofweightloss,andtheyweredoingreallywell,butthentheywouldhavea55%dropoutrate,

andtheresearcherswerelike,whyisthat?Whyarepeopledoingreallywell,andwhentheystartlosingtheweight,theygettoacertainplateau,andthentheywoulddropout.Theyfoundout,bymistake,thatalotofthepeopleinthestudywerereportingthey'dbeenabusedinchildhood.Itwasodd,andtheresearchersweren'texpectingit.Onewomansummeditup,whenshesaid,"Beingoverweightwasaprotectionmechanismagainstunwantedmaleattention."Now,thatisacasewhereyou'vegotaprotocol,whichisahealthything,ahealthydietaryprotocoltoloseweightisathreattohersurvivalandherexistence,becauseshehasunresolvedabuseinchildhood.Youseetheadultwithfatigueandpeoplewithchronicstressandchronicfatiguesyndrome.Theyhaveadifferenttypeofexpressionoftheirtrauma,where,forexample,iftheyhaveattachmenttrauma,theymayhavelearnedtogetloveandbeokaybybeinganachievertypeorbeinganover-giver,wheretheyconstantlydiscounttheirownneeds,oraperfectionisttype.Theywerefrightenedintothisachievingwhateveritmaybe,sothatearningloveinsteadofbeingahumanbeingandknowingthatyou'realreadydeserving,andthatcanbearealthreattotheiridentitytojust...Theydon'treallyknowhowtoslowdownandstop.They'veforgottenhowtodoit,becausetheywerenevertrainedhowtodothat,anditwasdownplayed,anditwasn'timportant.Theynevergottheirneedsmet.Whenyoustartsaying,"Youneedtorelax,"itisathreattoactuallytheiridentity.It'sthesamewayastellingsomebody,"Youneedtoloseweight,"andactuallyitbecomesathreattothem,justtogiveyouanidea.Itaffectsbehaviorinthatway,whereit'sbasicallysabotagingbehavior,sowecouldhavegreatprotocoladviceaboutwhattodo,butwedon'tsticktoit,becausewekeepsabotagingit,becauseactuallywedon'tfeelsafedoingit,andalsobeliefs.Traumaaffectsourbeliefsunconsciously.Weallknowthattheplaceboeffectandpositivethinkinghassuchanimpactonbiology.Itchangesourbiology,with33%oftheeffectivenessofalldrugsarenowplacebo,right?Weknowithasaphysiologicalchange.Whenyouhaveastrongpositivebeliefthatsomethingisgoingtohappen,you'regoingtogetbetter,thatchangesyourbiology.Withemotionaltrauma,it'softenunconscious.It'sfeelingsandbeliefsthatwe'redisconnectedfromandmaynotbeawareof,thingstodowith,forexample,feelingshame,ornotfeelingthatwedeservehealth,forexample.That'swherethemind,thepowerofthemind,willactuallysabotage,aswell.Thosearesomeofthewaysthatittranslatesintoanexpressionofillness.It'sbiochemistry,it'sbehavior,anditaffectsourbeliefs,aswell.

teengoingtotherapyandtalkingitout,buttheproblemwiththat...Ithinkthatalotofwhatdrivesusemotionally,we'renotconsciouslyawareof.Thatispartoftheproblemwithtalktherapy.It'sgreat.Imean,alotofpeopleneedthat.Theyneedthatconnection,especiallyalotofpeoplethataresociallyisolatedtoday,andpeopledosortouttheirproblemsthatway.Ithinkthat,forme,I'dbeenthere,donethat,andIstillfeltIhadallthisemotionalbaggagethatIwasn'tabletoaddress,becauseitwasunconscious.That'swhere,forme,bioenergeticscamein,doingaprogramcalledNESHealth,inidentifyingandaddressingthoseunconscioustraumasthataredriversofbehavior.

Wendy: Yes,absolutely,yeah,becausewhenyougotoaconventionaldoctororpsychiatrist,you'rereallyonlygoingtobeofferedmedicationsforanykindofemotionalissuesyou'regoingthrough,depressionoranxiety.Forme,I'vebeenonantidepressantsbefore,andthey'reaBand-Aid.They'rereallyjustcoveringupsymptomsandnotaddressingtheunderlyingrootcause.Forme,I'mdonewithBand-Aids.Iwanttoaddresstheunderlyingrootcause,togetridofthedepression,getridofanxietyoranykindofothernegativethoughtsorruminatingthoughtsorphysicalreactionsinmybody,becauseoftheseemotionaltraumaissues,andjusttoreleasethemandletgoofthem,sothey'renolongeranissue.Ithinksomanypeoplegetstuckinthatcycle.They'rejustnotawarethattherearesomanyunbelievable,cutting-edgemodalitiesouttherethatreallyarelight-yearsaheadofwhatthemedicalmainstreamcommunityaredoing.

Niki: Yeah,that'ssotrue,andyoumentionedantidepressants.Somuchworksagainstwhatweneedtodotoreleasetrauma,becauseitwillstopthedownemotion,becauseitnumbsyouout,butitalsostopsyoufromfeelingthejoy.Youcan'taccessthejoywhenyou'reessentiallybeingnumbedoutbysomething,whichistheBand-Aidapproach.That'snottosay...Sometimesit'shighlyappropriateforpeopletobeonthatmedication,anddefinitelydon'tjustcomeoffit.Ifyou'relisteningandyou'reonit,makesureyougoandseeyourmedicaldoctorbeforemakinganychanges,becauseifyouareonaprescribedantidepressant,youknowthesafetypointthere.Ultimatelydealingwiththerootcause,itwouldrequireagradualreductionofthatmedication,becausepartofreleasingtrauma,it'slearningto...Doyouknowwhatitis?It'sactuallylearningtofeelagain.It'saformofawakening.It'swhenwe'vereleasedtrauma,weneedtofeelagain.
