18 Pines Summary Pines Mission Statement Pines is a traditional annual end of the year celebration of the CSB/SJU
community with a focus on student engagement. By planning inclusive,
innovative, and fun events throughout the weekend, JEC strives to provide Pines
attendees with a lasting on-campus memory. Pines invites all.
2018 Update, Pines Planning Community
Paint Dance On Friday, April 27, JEC sponsored a paint dance for campus. Starting at 9:00
PM on Friday, students were able to paint their faces, grab a free bandana, and
dance with lots of colored powder paint flying through the air! Geyer set up
four tents on the St. Ben’s Mall, campus DJs was hired for the evening, and over
700 pounds of powdered paint was ordered. The dance was a major success,
especially due to the high attendance of seniors.
Pines Concert A large-scale concert closed out our Pines weekend on Saturday at 9 PM in Saint
John’s Sexton Arena. The concert opened with our Voice Winner, Jack
Fitzpatrick, who played for 30 minutes. Following Jack, hip-hop artist Lupe
Fiasco took the stage. Lupe had a 60 minute set. Roughly, a third of the student
body attended. While scanner data is not fully accurate with only 868 students
scanned, of those scanned, 20% of students were students of color.
Lupe was the first hip-hop artist brought to campus. When the JEC started the
process of finding an artist in October, they knew that Pines needed to undergo
some changes in order to ensure it upheld our Pines mission to invite all. They
saw one common theme after examining student surveys: hip-hop had never
been represented in the music brought to campus, despite students asking for
it. The Pines planning committee consisting of the JEC Co-Chairs (Ramon
Angeles & Ashley Wilson) and the Concerts (Jacob Sterling, Jonathan First, &
Jackson Oettinger), Traditions (Emily Berg & Maddy Zinken), and PR Committee
Chairs (Magen Puerzer, Claire Hasselman, & Michael Thompson), knew this was
the year to make it happen. They wanted to show students that their voices
were being heard and they took the steps to make it happen. After months of
searching we found an artist that was available and within our budget, and had
support from campus administration.
Club Sponsored Events New this year was a collaboration with various clubs and organizations to add to the 18 Pines weekend.
Pines started with Noteworthy’s Blues and BBQ on Friday at 5 PM on the Saint Ben’s Mall, prior to the
paint dance. Saturday morning started with OLC’s and PRP’s Triathlon and then was followed with
Johnnie Blend’s spring concert, with CSBeats opening, and Leaps and Beats, a showcase of the various
dance clubs on campus.
Attendance The following graphs breakdown the attendance of each class year at the paint dance and concert:

Pictures from the weekend were posted on CSB/SJU’s Facebook Page, and a thank you email with a link
to the Pines survey was sent out to students the week after Pines. With 287 responses, 76.3% of
students said the concert was excellent or good and 50.9% of students
said the paint dance was excellent or good.
Overall, 18 Pines was a great success and students created some lasting memories. The club
collaboration worked out well and allowed for a busier weekend without JEC doing it all. The Painted
Pines Dance and Lupe Fiasco Concert were new and innovative ways to celebrate Pines weekend that
upheld our Pines mission statement.
