SOLDERING WIREIntroduction : Soldering is a process of joining solid components by introducing between thema solder (molten alloy) having a lower melting point than that of the base metal of the componentsbeing joined. The importance of soldering wire is shown by the multitudes of uses to which it isput. Soldering wire is widely used for manufacturing electronic circuits, for the joining of variouscomponents of television, radio, video cassette recorder and other home entertainment instru-ments of modern age. Soldering wire also finds its application in plumbing, making of automobileand air-craft radiators. In any developing country like India, soldering wire has very good scope, because of increasing consumer’s demand mainly in electronics and electrical.Properties and Characteristics : Soldering wire is a well known joining material and hasbeen in a general use since long. Soldering wire is basically an alloy of tin and lead. A wide rangeof composition is used, the choice being determined by the particular application and priceconsideration. Soldering is a metallurgical joining method using a filler metal called solder with amelting point below 315°C. Soldering relies on welding for the bond formation and requiresneither diffusion nor inter-metallic compound growth with the base metal to achieve bonding.Uses and Applications: The uses of soldering wire vary from quality to quality depending uponthe percentage of base metal. It is very useful in the field of electronics, electrical and otherfields.Market Survey : Soldering is an old process for joining solid components. Soldering hasvery vast field of application. Soldering wire is used in joining various components of electronicsand electricals. The major consumers of soldering wire are electronics and electrical industrieslike radio, tape recorder, televisions, photographic instruments, various laboratory and industrialcontrol and computer hardware manufactures. The continuously increasing demand and pro-duction of electric and electronic goods both for domestic and industrial/laboratory ensures theincreasing demand of soldering wire.Future of 'soldering wire' industry is very bright, owing toits vast field of application. It comes under home scale industry, requiring a total plant andmachinery cost around Rs. 10 lakhs.Formulation: The following few types of lead tin andsolders are commonly employedfor different applications.

Tin Percentage Lead percentage60 4050 5040 6030 70

Among the four types the first is very close to eutectic composition having lowest melting pointand is mostly used in wide field of application.Raw Materials : Lead and tin Machinery RequiredThe following machinery are required for the manufacturing the soldering wires:Extrusion process Dies for Extrusion process Moulds and handling equipments Small meltingfurnace Crucible etc. Manufacturing ProcessManufacturing process of soldering wire is very simple. The required tin-lead ratio in which thesolder wire is to be made is melted in crucible in coke fire furnace. To improve its quality. 0.5%antimony is added. The molten metal is poured in metal moulds. The metal moulds are just like waxcandle moulds of size 1 meter length and 2 cm diameter. An iron rod of 3 mm. diameter is fixed inthe mould containing molten compound. When the molten compound solidifies remove the iron rodfrom the hole followed by the pouring of molten wood resin. Then bars are removed and fed intothe rolling plant where the diameter of the bars is reduced to about 5 mm. diameter wire is againmade to pass through rolling machine where the diameter of this wire is reduced upto 2 mm.
