Never In DoubtVaal 7th January

The best bet on the card for most at Thursday’s inside track meeting was KIRSTEN’S PRIDE in the opening work rider’s maiden plate over 1000m, and she didn’t let down her supporters.

Taken straight to the front by Lyle Hewitson, the 1/3 favourite led throughout. She was always clear and won without ever really being asked to race by seven and a quarter.

Four of the afternoon’s nine races were run over 1200m and quickest against the clock in these was LA MANGA in the MR86 Handicap. Another to lead from pillar to post, the daughter of Captain Al was a length and a half clear going through the 400m. She quickened well at that point and went on to score with authority by four.

Marginally the faster of the two 1700m maiden plates was the boy’s affair won by WOODY GLOW.

Content to amble along in the backend of midfield for most of the journey, the top weight ran on best of all at the business end of the race and won well by two and a half from the lightly raced NAWAB.TITBITS

They raced on the poly track on Friday where the fastest of the three 1200m races was the bill topping MR91 Handicap won by REBEL HOUSE. Taken straight to the front by Teague Gould, the 14/1 shot enjoyed a three lengths advantage for most of the journey. The chasing pack headed by WEEKEND TEMPER closed in quickly over the final 300m though and it was only by the narrowest of margins that the son of Rebel King held on.

The faster of the two 1900m events, a MR59 Handicap, was also stolen by a front runner. Nine lengths clear of the second horse turning for home, the 8/1 shot MY CELEBRATION kept

on determinedly in the short home straight and still had three and a half lengths to spare at the wire.

Another to win with lengths to spare but in a much more worthy fashion was TOWNSHIP TALK in the opening maiden plate over 1200m. Sent off an uneasy favourite at 18/10, Dorrie Sham’s charge was soon up handy.

He was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m marker and won going away by three and three quarters.TITBITS

The 5/1 joint second favourite CON-QUERING QUEEN was running on strongly late when third in the novice plate over 1600m.

maiden event over 1200m going away by five and a half. The uneasy favourite BULLETING HOME only got going late when runner up in the MR84 Handi-cap over 1400m.

Races 5-8 at this meeting were originally scheduled to take place on the turf. Three races over 1400m got proceedings underway on Friday evening and the quickest home in these was ELUSIVE WOLF in the boy’s division of the maiden plate. Always handy, the well supported son of Elusive Fort (9/2 into 3/1) got the better of the odds on favourite HEARTS ‘R PUMPING (1/3 out to 6/10) 60m out, and with the rest some nine lengths adrift, he won going away by three quarters.

The fastest of the three 2000m races was the MR86 Handicap won by JONOVICH. The field was very tightly bunched in the straight and with a lot of jostling going on the form might not stand up. The winner raced sixth of the eight and with a clear run down the inside rail he got up late

to score by a half. The remaining two races were both run over 1600m and stopping the clock in the fastest time here was NIGHT SHADOW in the MR74 Handicap. Gavin Van Zyl’s top weight got away well when the gates opened and was soon positioned close to the speed. He took up the running as they approached the 100m pole and drew clear easily below the distance to score by three.TITBITS

The 6yo JET INTOMBI came from the rear when getting up late to win the MR62 Handicap over 2000m.Not the quickest into stride, the 3yo MR WIN-SOME ran on well from midfield when winning the MR70 Handicap over 2000m with authority by two and three quarters.

Trying the distance for the first time, the 3yo STEBBINS found good support to win the opening maiden plate over 2000m and he did do the business. Sent off second favourite at 22/10 (op 7/2), Justin Snaith’s charge was always handy. He was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 200m marker and with the rest well beaten he comfortably accounted for the costly to follow SCHILLACI by three quarters. Another 3yo to win well on this card was ZAFIRA in the MR80 Handicap over 2450m. An easy winner in the maiden ranks last time out, the daughter of Silvano raced in sixth for most of the journey. She quickened nicely when the race began in earnest 600m out and won well from the grey KISSIMMEE by three quarters. Race five on

the card was a MR88 Handicap over 1400m and here we saw a nice performance from OFF THE MARK. Backed into favouritism at the track (3/1 into 18/10), Sean Tarry’s charge raced prominent throughout. She put her head in front shortly after passing the 200m marker and went on to win with authority from FORTITUDE by two. Due the persistent close proximity of an electrical storm the remainder of the meeting was abandoned.TITBITS

NEVADA only had to be pushed out in order to score when making all in the maiden plate over 1160m. Third placed VEE MAN (beaten two lengths) took a bump at the start of this race and was running on strongly at the finish.

SPORTING POST • MONDAY 18th - THURSDAY 21st JANUARY 2016 3

he day marks the opener of a unique three year partnership between Investec and Cape Thoroughbred Sales. The global specialist bank and asset manager Investec, sponsors of the world renowned Derby Festival at Epsom Downs, will treat their

clients and guests from around the globe to high class South African racing and local enthusiasts will be going along for the ride of a lifetime.

QualityBoth the Gr1 R1 million Klawervlei Majorca

Stakes and the Gr1 R1 million Investec Cape Derby have been moved a week forward from their usual berths on J&B Met day, and in line with expectations, have attracted capacity fields of great depth.

The Gr1 Investec Cape Derby is a traditional three-year-old classic of genuine importance to the breed,

In-form trainer Justin Snaith has a powerful four-pronged attack in the 2000m test.

Piere Strydom, who rode such a cracker on Black Arthur for Snaith when winning the Gr3 Politician Stakes from lengths back on L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate day, now rides the Dynasty colt, Prince Of Wales - a low profile winner of 2 of his 5 starts.

While on paper he looks to have plenty to do, one would be reckless to dismiss this powerful combination.

Top heavyweight jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe, who rode Black Arthur to win his maiden, gets the chance on the son of Silvano, who should relish the extra and jumps from a favourable 5 draw.

Azzie DuoGauteng trainer Mike Azzie saddles a

powerful duo, including Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes winner Rabada, who produced a relatively flat effort when running unplaced in the Politician Stakes.

There were excuses though in terms of his travel arrangements and it may be worthwhile noting that Marcus sticks with him.

Azzie also saddles the relatively unexposed Gr1 placer Abashiri, who has his first outing in just under two months.

The son of Go Deputy was touted early on as probably having more genuine classic potential than Rabada, and his presence may add a curved ball for punters.

Majorca MagicThe R1 million Gr1 Klawervlei Majorca

Stakes is run over the mile and possesses exalted status among the country’s weight for age fillies and mares events.

Mike Bass’s Trippi flyer Inara beat the currently UK-based Cold As Ice in a nailbiter last year and she looks primed for a serious double bid, after being outgunned late by the brilliant Smart Call in the Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes on Queen’s Plate day.

But Inara will have to again beat the Mambo In Seattle filly Same Jurisdiction, who suffered an over-reach on her near-fore when finishing fourth in the Paddock Stakes.

She appears, by all reports, to have pulled up none the worse for wear, and although scratched from the Met, will face her final summer target - and with Anton Marcus staying loyal to her, she must be a massive runner.

Dollar DreamsThe hotly contested fight

for a final place in the CTS Million Dollar has seen ten colts and geldings and six fillies make the final field of 16, with four reserve runners.

There may be some inevitable hard luck stories for the likes of Politician Stakes fast-finisher Liege and Glen Puller’s consistent Purple Mountains, but the panel appear to have balanced

the equation neatly. Dennis Drier’s dual Gr1 winner Seventh Plain has had no luck with the draws again and the son of Seventh Rock saw his Million Dollar aspirations dampened by a 19 draw.

He gets Anton Marcus in the irons again, and the team will be wise to a repeat of the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes tactical scoop, where the pole position drawn Budapest ran away from his field.

Seventh Plain ran a cracking prep in the Sophomore Sprint over 1200m a fortnight back and will be primed for the big payday.

Interestingly Anthony Del-pech was in the saddle on the giantkilling Budapest and he gets the chance again from the 1 draw aboard the Jay Peg colt , Exit Here, who left KZN for the Cape at midnight on Friday.

He has won his last five in a row and three of these have been over 1600m, including an easy win in the Listed KZN Guineas Trial, and two have been over 1400m.

Exit Here proved the suitability of the 1400m trip last time in a handicap – if he travels well, he will be galloped at Kenilworth in the days prior to the big one.

Class RecordHis trainer Charles Laird has

an enviable record in Sales races and will be looking to retain his current status as trainer of the winner of the richest race in South African history. Laird won the 2014 running of the Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein with the filly Rich Girl. That race carried a stake of R3,85 million, the highest to date in South African history- at the time!

Gavin Van Zyl’s Redcarpet Captain, like Seventh Plain, pulled an awful draw but the son of Captain Al, who is due to depart Durban four days prior to raceday, is fit and well and has enjoyed a perfect prep. He will be wearing the blinkers again after the headgear appear to boost his concentration last time.

He also has an omen on his side - Budapest, who races out of the same yard in the same silks - won the R2,5 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes. Redcarpet Captain will be shown the Kenilworth track in the build-up.

We can bank on blue-chip racing at its finest – and don’t forget to buy your weekend edition of the Sporting Post for an in-depth analysis of all the features.

The inaugural Investec Day Of Dreams at Kenilworth on Saturday 23 January promises horseracing action previously unequalled on the African continent. With the bar being raised in terms of recordbreaking stakes, and two historic Gr1 features being contested, it really doesn’t get much better than this.
