The gospel passage this weekend is the very familiar story of the feeding of more than five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish. Our faith initially draws our attention to the miraculous nature of this event. It affirms our belief that as the Son of God, Jesus was able to perform miraculous deeds such as this one. But if we look more deeply we can find other layers of meaning. Our patron, Andrew, is on hand to remind Jesus that since it was so late in the day that he ought to dismiss the people so they could go and find something to eat. His response astonished them: “why don’t you give them something to eat yourselves?” They pointed out how expensive it would be for them to obtain enough food for such a large crowd. Exasperated, Jesus asks them how much food they can actually put their hands on. As it turned out, there is a boy with five barley loaves and two fish. We should note that in the Old Testament, Elijah the great prophet had provided a poor widow and her son with barley that never ran out. And on another occasion, Elisha the prophet had multiplied barley loaves to feed twenty people. So, by feeding 5000 with five barley loaves proves that Jesus is a greater prophet than either of these renowned OT figures.
At this point, Jesus directs his apostles to perform a little miracle of their own by getting this great crowd of people to sit down on the grass. When they manage to do this, Jesus is ready to give thanks to God and break the bread. (These words foreshadow what Jesus will do with the loaves at the last supper.) After blessing (i.e. thanking) the loaves and fishes, the apostles begin distributing them to the people and discover to their amazement that there was more than enough for everyone—with twelve basketsful left over! In the end, the apostles did assist Jesus in giving the people something to eat themselves.
This miraculous event points to the fact that Jesus is himself the bread of life. At the last Supper he provided us with the means by which we, his followers can become bread for the life of the world. By partaking of the sacrament of his body and blood, Jesus takes up residence in us and empowers us to give the people of this world what they truly need—a personal relationship with the true bread that comes down from heaven.

FATHER STANLEY ROTHER
Servant of God
On August 1, Archbishop Coakley will celebrate a 5pm Anniversary Mass for Father Rother at Holy Trinity in Okarche. There will be a cookie and punch reception in the parish hall following Mass. The Father Rother Guild will be on hand for membership information and to purchase books or other items.
Recently, a panel of theologians at the Vatican ruled that Fr. Rother qualifies as a Martyr of the Church. When confirmed by the Pope, he will be beatified, one step short of being declared a Saint.

Join Kurt and Julie Carrick and members of our church community for a powerful presentation inviting us to look at how we live our call to Discipleship by the example of Mother Mary and the Apostles, in the grace received through the Sacraments. Be drawn ever closer to Christ and His life through Music, Personal Witness and the Teachings of the Catholic Faith. Make the journey from the head to the heart a most enriching and personally meaningful one this summer. Begin the preparation that will change your life, the life of your family and St Andrew, as we walk the path toward intentional discipleship. Julie Carrick has been involved in ministry within the Catholic Church her entire life. She and Kurt have ministered to thousands throughout the world and they have ministered in a powerful way here at St Andrew’s on two occasions. She and Kurt first came nearly 5 years ago. Then, Julie ministered to us as we began the journey of Healing after the Storm in 2013.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING
Sunday, August 2nd 10:30 am, Room 4
All volunteers in the parish whose work brings them into regular contact with children must be trained in the requirements of our Safe Environment program. The program consists of a video, a background check at parish expense and written application. We welcome volunteers in religious education programs, donut helpers, chaperones, drivers, and very importantly- volunteers to help watch the children in the nursery! If all who used the nursery would volunteer even once every month or two, we could open the nursery more often.
