Remembrance 2017
The year 10 GCSE Drama class performed a dramatic piece to mark Remembrance with all Lower school pupils. Sadie Hennessy and Hannah Norman sang a duet from Les Miserables beautifully, alongside freeze frames and mimes of very emotional moments representative of images of war. They chorally delivered two poems and facts truly effectively. What an amazing piece of work and their first performance as a group! Well done year 10!!

Year 10 GCSE art pupils attended Cardiff Museum on 7th
November. There were many excellent drawings produced
and the museum staff gave many compliments about how
well behaved our pupils were.
Well done to all who attended.
Drama Department News Newyddion Yr Adran Ddrama
On Wednesday 25th October Drama students from years 11, 12 and 13 attended a performance of Black Rats production of ‘One Man two Guvnors’ at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. This high energy farce was truly spectacular! It was fast paced, hysterically funny and melodramatic throughout!
It was a definite hit with the students who now need to evaluate the production and design elements in preparation for their exam. This show is not to be missed!
It is that time of year again where we enter KS3 pupils for our annual National Shakespeare competition. Brynteg have won this competition three times in the past four years, the talent of our pupils has been incredible!
If you are interested in getting involved then please see Mrs Beesley in room 22 as soon as possible. The competition involves learning a Shakespearean monologue or duologue and performing and filming it.
It’s great fun!
Come along and sign up!

Shakespeare Schools Competition 2017-2018
Well the High School Musical auditions have successfully been completed. What a fantastic turnout! Myself and Mrs Fender would like to send huge congratulations to all who gave up their time and attended auditions. It was a gruelling process and one that I do not always relish as there will always be upset and heartache along the way.
The talent this year was truly remarkable and, as parents, you should all be so very proud of your children. The final cast list has been posted and rehearsals have commenced!
Everyone who auditioned has a part , from chorus ensemble to main cast! ‘We are all in this together’ and I am sure they will ‘Bop to the top’ and you will see them ‘soaring’ to success!
Congratulations all!!

A group of year 13 Computer Science students from Brynteg recently
visited the BT Data Centre in Cardiff Bay. The day included several
presentations from BT staff, amongst them an ex-Brynteg pupil, on
topics ranging from cyber security to analysing ‘Big Data’.
They were also given advice on apprenticeship and graduate training
programmes provided by BT.
The students were given a tour of the data centre itself where many
multinational companies, banks, government agencies and other
organisations store and process their data, on the many thousands
of servers they run at the site. A fascinating and informative time was
had by all!

Football:
Great result for the year 10 football team beating Bishop Vaughan 5-2 to reach the final of the West Glamorgan area, meaning they are one game away from the National knock outs. After going 2-0 down in the first 10 minutes the boys continued to play their own style and dominated the rest of the game. Goals came from Ethan Bromley x2, Jordan Gittins, Ethan
Sutton and a screaming 25 yard strike from Louis Edwards.
Mr. D Ince
Cross Country:
Well done to all the boys who competed in boys cross country on 24th October. Charlie Watts came 46th and Ieuan Pippin 84th out of 200 runners. In the under 13 race Nathan Cox came
29th and Bailey Paetel in 80th place out of 300 runners. Fantastic result everyone!

Rugby news:
Year 8 - Brynteg v Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen
Last Tuesday Brynteg’s year 8 rugby took on Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen in the Ospreys east semi final. After finishing 2
nd in their group, Brynteg faced an away trip to a very strong
Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen side that won their group convincingly.
We started the game really well as Shea Duggan ran a superb angle from a set piece scrum and slid under the posts. Brynteg continued to pressurise Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen which led to us scoring a further two tries through Mckenzie Gray and length of the field team try started by Bailey Paetel and finished by Samuel Matthews. After defending heroically for a long period of the first half Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen managed to score in the corner after a good phase of play which left them with an overlap. Just before the half, the Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen outside half threw a long floating pass which was picked off by Samuel Matthews who read it very well and made it to their 22m before offloading to Shea Duggan to score his second try of the match. After a clean break from Gabriel Brown Brynteg flooded through the gap and the ball was shifted to Javier Martinez-Thurling on the wing who showed their winger a clean pair of heels to score in the corner. The half time score was 33-7.
Both teams began the second half with the same intensity as the first. Luca Barclay and Jonny Evans led the Brynteg defence with some crunching tackles stopping the Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen attack in its tracks. They slowly built back into the game and a nice dummy pass from the Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen centre saw them score their second try of the match. Brynteg replied soon after with a further two tries from the opportunistic Nathan Cox who caught the ball off our own kick off and slid over in the corner. Brynteg then held Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen off for the remainder of the match to win convincingly 48-14!! A great effort from the whole year 8 squad who now play Maesteg in the Ospreys east final on the 21
st of November. Well Done Boys!! Venue to be confirmed.
Year 9 - Brynteg v Bryntirion
Year 9 also played their Ospreys east semi final in a derby match versus a table toping Bryntirion. The year 9 team looked to follow on from the year 8’s success by going through to the east final and securing a place in the Welsh Cup.
Brynteg began the match with the disadvantage of playing into the wind and up the slope. The first half was a very physical battle with both teams utilising a great blitz defence which was difficult to break down. Although Brynteg were at a disadvantage in the first half Gus Patterson and Ethan Scourfield made huge carries and managed to gain crucial yards to drive Brynteg up the field. Despite the heavy conditions the team showed a willingness to play a positive brand of rugby. Bryntirion kept fighting back and spent a large period of the first half in our 22m. Heroic defence from the whole team kept the opposition at bay, there were bone crunching tackles from the whole pack: Ethan Mawer, Charlie Ashpole, Rhys Vaughan, George Edwards, Archie Faulkner-Lerway, Luke Griffiths, Mac Francis and William Howell stopped them in their tracks. In the last few moments of the match Bryntirion snuck over the line to go into half time 7-0 up.
After regrouping at half time Brynteg were determined to take the game to Bryntirion in the second half. We continued to play an expansive style of rugby which led to Ethan Scourfield finishing a great team try by fending off two defenders to score in the corner. Gus Patterson slotted the extras to make it 7 all. Brynteg continued to battle hard with the players off the bench coming on and making an impact. From a set piece scrum Bryntirion managed to work an overlap which put their winger over in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful which left the score at 12-7. Brynteg fought back by turning the ball over in Bryntirion’s half which resulted in a penalty kick. Gus Patterson’s hefty boot slotted the penalty from around the 10 meter line which made the score 12-10 going into the last 5 minutes. After gathering the ball off kick off Brynteg carried the ball into the oppositions half where Bryntirion’s ill-discipline cost them by conceding another penalty just in front of the half way line. Gus Patterson stepped up confidently and curled the ball between the posts to win the match for Brynteg 13-12!! A huge squad effort from the year 9’s has put them through to the Ospreys east final v Dyffryn scheduled to be played on the 28
th of November. Well done boys!! Venue to be confirmed.
Seniors
The Seniors continued their unbeaten run in the Ospreys Premier League by beating Olchfa 45-5. Joe Patterson’s men managed to pull through the first half after a difficult opening period where Olchfa’s defence was hard to break down. Brynteg scored a few tries towards the end of the half through Tom Zielinski, Daniel O’Sullivan and Joe Patterson. The game opened up second half which suited an exciting Brynteg team more than the opposition. This led to Brynteg pulling away with tries from Thomas Davies, Oran Harry, Harry Hopkins and a
brace by the Birthday boy Joseph Davis! Well done boys, Ystalyfera next week!

Brynteg pupils in years 12 and 13, who are interested in studying medicine, have been invited to take part in the Widening Access to Medicine Mentoring Scheme. The scheme is run by medical students at Cardiff University who will mentor our pupils through their applications with the end goal of increasing successful applications from Welsh-domiciled pupils.
Our medical mentors, who are all current medical students at Cardiff University, visited the school during September and October to introduce themselves and establish a point of contact for pupils. Year 13 pupils discussed UCAS application and interviews and will be able to email their mentor with further queries following this. Year 12 pupils split up into smaller groups to discuss relevant work experience, volunteering opportunities and choosing the right medical school with the mentors. They also gained an insight to the mentor’s own experiences of applying and life as a medical student.
The mentors were very engaging and our pupils found it easy to converse with them asking lots of questions. Year 12 pupils said of their first meeting: “It was a very valuable experience and we gained a lot of knowledge to help us when applying for university, for example discussing the UKCAT admissions test”; “I learnt that I need to get work experience in various areas to make myself stand out when applying for the university I want to go to”; “It was interesting talking about the medicine course and we found out that different universities have different entry requirements”.
Regular contact will be maintained with our mentors with more meetings planned as pupils move through the application and interview process.

Sociology News Newyddion Cymdeithaseg
Here is her caption: How can something as simple as tea be related to sociology? I'll tell you how. This image can help explain the difference between the upper and lower class, the upper class (china cup) being the minority but powerful group of society and the lower class (sports direct cup) being the majority but powerless group of society. Tea is also a social ritual and helps individuals express their "Britishness". For example individuals from the upper class can present their "Britishness" by going to afternoon tea, however individuals of the lower class may just go to their local cafe or have tea in the comfort of their own home by having a "brew". But these classes make this their ritual just express it in different ways. Also this could be a stereotypical generalisation that we may never know unless we have experienced it. It always makes an appearance during disasters all around the world such as natural and war disasters. This shows that everyone turns to tea to bring people together and to bring comfort in helpless situations. Tea is also seen as a drug many people say they can't "function" without tea, but what does this really mean? They are addicted to it and that they can't live without it. Tea provides social and economic relationships to society by bringing people together and helping people financially. This is because it provides people with jobs in cafes to make tea allowing these workers to socialise with these customers. Also different brands in shops provide society with financial gain as individuals can make it in their own environment resulting in a beneficial economical and social society. Therefore, branding of tea can help explain globalisation as individuals only buy the brand that they know others buy because it "tastes" the best. Aisha Peerbaccus, Brynteg School
Congratulations to Aisha Peerbaccus who is the Cambridge University 2017 winner of the Department of Sociology Photo Competition. The judges were unanimous in choosing Aisha’s image: ‘How can something as simple as tea be related to Sociology?’ and were impressed by the image’s aesthetic merits and the thoughtful and interesting caption that accompanied it. Congratulations to Aisha, who receives a prize of £250 for herself and £250 for her school! Aisha and a teacher will also be invited to visit Cambridge.

Year 11 excelled themselves last term when they participated in mock interviews with local employers. The event was once again arranged in conjunction with our partners Careers Wales.
Employers and providers included: Careers Wales, Bridgend County Borough Council, The Fire Service, Lloyds Bank (our school business partners), Cardiff and Vale College and a range of STEM ambassadors.
Prior to the event, students were asked to complete an application form similar to one they might fill in in preparation for interview. Many thanks to year 11 Form Tutors and Eva Cornwall (Careers Advisor) for assisting our pupils with this.
Huw Jones (our business partner from Lloyds Bank) also came in to do an assembly on employability skills and interview techniques.
On the day, students were given an allotted time to attend the interview and I am pleased to say that attendance was extremely high. Students arrived punctually and conducted themselves extremely well.
The employers asked them questions about: themselves, their skills, strengths, qualifications, their future education goals, work experience and career aspirations. At the end of the interview, the employers provided the students with detailed written and verbal feedback.
The providers and employers gave glowing feedback on the performance of our students. They highlighted the fact that they would be happy to employ a number of individuals at this point in time. They were pleased with how the pupils reacted to the experience and expressed that they "thoroughly enjoyed working with them". They also felt that the majority of students had a clear idea about what career path they wanted to follow in the future, which reflects that the career's interventions that have been put in place for them this year have been helpful.
Although nervous at the outset, the students themselves felt that the experience was "very worthwhile" and they felt a "sense of pride" as they left the room.
Many thanks to Mrs Alyson Casling, Careers Wales, our business partners (Lloyds Bank) and all of the employers and providers that assisted us on the day.

Pwyslais Llythrennedd ar gyfer Tachwedd
Each month as a school we have a specific literacy focus to improve literacy skills and help pupils gain a better understanding of different grammatical points.
You can help to reinforce each literacy focus at home by:
testing your child on the definition of each literacy skill or grammar point.
asking your child to give you examples of sentences where they would use a particular literacy skill / grammar point.
asking your child to give you examples of lessons where they have used each literacy skill / grammar point.
Year 8 and 9 - Simple Sentences
A simple sentence has one complete verb.
A simple sentence has a subject.
The subject tells us who or what the sentence is about.
The subject often appears at the start of the sentence.
The subject usually appears before the verb.
The subject can be one word or a group of words – a phrase
e.g. Tim played tennis for Great Britain
‘Tim’ is the subject of the sentence - ‘played’ is the verb.
Year 7- Commas
Commas are used in the following ways.
To separate items in a list:
'I'd like the steak, chips, onion rings and peas please.'
To separate direct speech from the words that introduce it or follow it:
Mr Blogg said, "You did really well in your test."
To indicate a pause between parts of a sentence:
'While John was eating his dinner, the phone rang.'
Common Errors
‘Would’ / ‘Should’ / ‘Could have’
Pupils sometimes use the word ‘of’ where they should use the word ‘have’. This is because the shortened version of ‘have’ sounds like ‘of’.
‘They could have walked twenty miles = They could’ve walked twenty miles.’
Because the letters ‘ve’ after the apostrophe sound like ‘of’, some people make the mistake of writing :

Rowing across the river
James and John are on the two opposite banks of a river. They both have a rowing boat. They both start at the same time towards the opposite bank.
They pass each other at 180 metres from the bank where James departed. When reaching the opposite bank, they both take a rest for the same amount of time before they return.
On the way back, they pass each other at 100 metres from the bank from where James returned. James and John both row with a constant speed, but John rows faster.
The Question: How wide is the river?
Answer at the end of the bulletin.

Answer - Numeracy Challenge
(page 34)
Call the requested width of the river r. The first time that James and John meet, the total distance that
they have travelled together equals the width of the river, or r. The second time that James and John
meet, the total distance that they have travelled together equals twice the width of the river plus the width
of the river, so 3 x r .
Because James and John row with a constant speed, it also holds that the distance that James travelled
in total at the second meeting, equals 3 times the distance he travelled in total at the first meeting. The
distance that James travelled in total at the first meeting is 180. The distance that James travelled in total
at the second meeting is r + 100. When we combine the above, we get the following equation:
3 x 180 = r + 100. When we solve this equation we find that r = 440.
Therefore, the river is 440 metres wide.
