GSUSLIVE
This week GreenfieldSchool and WoodhamCommunity TechnologyCollege played host to theGSUS Live show, in theform of a mobileclassroom with a fullyfunctioning multimediacomputer suite. It is designed to presentJesus’ teachings in astimulating and relevantway, allowing students toinvestigate these issues thatare ever present in today’ssociety. The program ismanaged and presented bythe Youth Interns and Stafffrom Christian Life CentreNewton Aycliffe alongwith Graeme Murray whois co-ordinating the eventin the North East for thenext 6 weeks. The pupils are surprised bythe hi-tech computers andsound system, theircuriosity increases as thepresenter gives them a pairof 3D glasses: the sessionbegins and a fast pace 3Dvideo sequence ensues. They are then invited toexplore the issues raised inthe film with the use ofinteractive computerprograms that allow themto investigate and respondto given situations. Eventhe teachers have beenimpressed by the high-quality teaching sessions,as Mr Harris fromGreenfield schoolexpressed: “It’s been greatto welcome back the GSUSLive Trailer to Greenfield,it’s created a good buzzaround the school. Pupilscan explore issues offorgiveness, fear andrejection, find out whatJesus taught about themand think about howrelevant those teachings aretoday. The hardest part ofthe week was trying toexplain to the older pupilswhy they couldn’t havetheir lessons in there too!”

There was addedexcitement at theHeighington Scouts OpenDay on Sunday 12th Junewhen the Mayor ofDarlington, Stella Robsonpresented prizes to thewinners of the anti-litterposter competition open toall the Cubs. The seventeenentries that were on displayduring the afternoonshowed just how concernedthe young people are at theamount of litter dropped inthe parish. They alsoshowed just how muchtalent they possess. It was a difficult task toarrive at the winners but thewell-deserved prizes wentto Claudia Ryman for thebest hand-drawn poster andMary McAneney andBecky Burton for the best
Heighington Parish Litter Groupcomputer-designed poster. The competition wasorganised by theHeighington Parish LitterGroup and the prizes weredonated by Peter Smyth theChairman. This event was preceded bya Litter Pick on Saturdaywhen 30 bags of litter werecollected. Since March wehave held four Litter Picksin the parish. We haveconcentrated on removinglitter from the verges andthe hedges along some ofthe main roads in the parish. We have mainly collectedfrom Heighington bypassand the roads running offit; the road throughRedworth and up the hilltowards Shildon, the roadthrough School Aycliffe, and the road towards
Aycliffe Village. Altogetherwe have collected over 150black bags of rubbish, aswell as many items toobulky to be bagged. There is no doubt that wehave improved theappearance of the roads andour thanks go to everyonewho has helped us collect. The growth of grass on theverges now makes pickingup litter more difficult andfor this reason there will beno more Picks until
Saturday 29 October whenwe hope even more peoplewill come forward to help.In the meantime we areconcentrating on tacklingthe bigger task ofpersuading people not todrop litter at all. As part ofour awareness campaign wehave asked the children atHeighington PrimarySchool to come up withanti-litter slogans and therewill be prizes for the bestones.

A £400,000 scheme toboost gas supplies in New-ton Aycliffe will get un-der way this month.Engineers working on be-half of Northern Gas Net-works will replace justover 2km of old metal gasmain with new, more du-rable plastic pipe.Northern Gas Networks isthe region’s new gas dis-tribution company, whichbought the North’s36,000km network of gasmains from National GridTransco this month. Its work in NewtonAycliffe is to ensure thenetwork is as safe and ef-ficient as it’s ever been, and is part of an extensivemulti-million pound pro-gramme of investmentacross the North of Eng-land this year. The project in NewtonAycliffe will be carried outon Northern Gas Net-works’ behalf by UnitedUtilities, one of the UK’sbiggest multi-utility com-panies.It will take place in Cen-tral Avenue, StephensonWay, Pease Way, EmersonWay, Simpasture Gate andBarrington road over fourmonths. However, engineers areplanning to keep disrup-tion to a minimum by us-ing trench less technologyfor the vast majority of thework.Neil Wilkinson, UnitedUtilities’ network officer, apologised for any incon-venience but added, “Thiswork is absolutely essen-tial if we are able to guar-antee the continued safetyand reliability of gas sup-plies in Newton Aycliffe. It is a significant projectbut the good news is thatwe are hoping most of ourpipe-laying will be inverges and will not affecttraffic”.The work will start on theB6443 Central Avenueclose to the St Mary’sChurch roundabout inJune and is due to finishin October.
