1535 – 1620 The Historical Purpose of Feng Shui GM Dr Stephen Skinner

The Historical Purpose of Feng Shui was not to ‘live in harmony with nature’ or ‘spiritual ecology’ nor was it to just improve the interior decoration. Its purpose was to accumulate qi (ch’i) and to organise it in such a way that the ‘luck’ of occupants of the building would increase and their life be made easier, more fertile and richer, blessing them with abundance. The original names for these practices were Dili and Kan you, not feng shui. Dili concerned itself with identifying the patterns in the landscape, the presence of mountain dragons and water dragons, and their effects on adjacent buildings, so it is not surprising that the modern Chinese meaning of that word is ‘geography’. Kan you related to the timing of changes, and the relationship between direction and time. In the third century these subjects came to be called feng shui, and the effects of wind and water on the accumulation of qi were formulated.

Grand Master Stephen Skinner wrote the first English book on Feng Shui in the 20th century, the Living Earth Manual of Feng Shui. With distribution in 41 countries, this magazine helped popularise Feng Shui around the world. Grand Master Skinner launched the ‘London International Feng Shui Conference’ in 1999, the largest Feng Shui conference ever held in UK/Europe. Polish born Master Jacek Kryg specialised in Chinese culture during university, and wrote his MA and postgraduate thesis on “Yijing and Its Reflection of Chinese Society” and “Contemporary Perception of Daoism” respectively.
