SAFETYNews...

Safety CommitteeSeptember 13, 2001

Niles, Ohio

The Safety Committee will meet atthe RMI facility in Niles, Ohio onThursday, September 13, 2001. TheSafety Committee meeting is open toindustry. Currently there are 20registered participants.

This is a great forum for sharing information and learningfrom each other’s experiences in an industry where safetyrisks can be relatively high. In a highly competitive industry, safety is one of the few areas where competitive pressuresdo not and should not inhibit honest and open communicationbetween participants. Feedback from our last meeting hostedby TIMET’s Henderson, NV plant was very positive. Withyour attendance and participation, this year’s meeting isexpected to be just as beneficial. For more informationcontact Stacey Jorgensen at (303) 404-9400 or e-mail:[email protected].

Throughout its history, Titanium FinishingCompany (TFC) has been involved with unusualfinishing requirements for common and exotic

materials. The company was originally formed to provideproprietary titanium anodizing processes. TFC selectivelyexpanded its capabilities over the years to meet other specialmetal finishing needs of the market niches it served. As thecoating systems TFC offered were found to performsuccessfully in more and more demanding aerospace and otherhigh-reliability applications, their use naturally spun-off intoother industries. TFC’s depth of expertise in specialized metalcoating technologies and problem-solving capabilities arewell-known throughout the military, aerospace and medicalcommunities.

Smart Shirt Rolls Up Its Own SleevesWhen Temperature Rises

By Katherine Cheng Reprinted fromJuly 26 - After centuries of sweating it out and second-guessing the weather when we dress in the morning, moderntechnology has finally taken away some of the strain ofdressing ourselves. Relief comes in the form of a newlydesigned wrinkle-free shirt designed to roll its own sleeves.

Created by Mauro Taliani of the Italian design house CorpoNove, this is a “thinking shirt” for the laziest of men. Madefrom an alloy of nickel and titanium, and interspersed withnylon, the shirt has a characteristic called “shape memory.”When its wearer gets too hot, the sleeve fabric is programmedto shorten from wrist to elbow in a matter of seconds. A fewdegrees cooler, and the shirt sleeves return to normal.

Scientists previously suggested that metal memory could beused in the underwiring of bras, but costs prevented the ideafrom ever taking off.

“I wanted to do something new in the fashion world,” saysTaliani. “It’s the first example of intelligent, smart clothes ina real way.”

The shirt also never needs ironing, making it perfect forfrequent travelers and busy people on the go. Even if theshirt has been crumpled in a ball and packed tightly in asuitcase, 30 seconds of blow-drying will bring it back topristine conditions, according to Taliani. “Our customersare going to be looking for something new, but I don’t wantto sell to just curious people,” he says. “I want to helpeveryday people in their daily life.”

Everyday people might have a hard time stomaching theshirt’s hefty price tag, though: It costs $3,750. Taliani hasproduced just 200 shirts this season, available in only onecolor: metallic grey. But he plans to release more next springand summer all over the world. “The more we sell, the moreprices will go down,” he says. Next up, Taliani plans todevelop an entire line of clothing for “lazy people who don’tlike to iron” and a jacket that tightens around your body astemperatures go down.

When the temperaturerises, so do the sleeves ofthis smart shirt made by anItalian company. Thefabric is actually pro-grammed to shrink.(Corpo Nove)

the “Worm” Virus, the ITA would like to assure its membersand customers that virus free is our motto!

As industry integrates more on the web and computers areaccessed more frequently it is important that your computersystems are protected. At ITA top of the line technology isin place and used every day. ITA’s computer server maintainsand scans every document that enters ITA through e-mail.That server has an AntiVirus protection that scans every e-mail, document, or file that is sent both to and from the ITA.Once your document arrives or leaves the ITA, ourpreventative maintenance programs are in effect. To furtherprotect our systems each ITA computer is installed with theNorton AntiVirus package and checks every document.

By using the Norton AntiVirus 2000, it protects our computerswhile on the Internet or getting information from floppy disksor CDs. It also automatically scans incoming attachments inthe most popular e-mail programs. ITA can quarantine aninfected file so that it’s safe for all parties to store or sendinformation without fear of spreading any viruses.

ITA Educational Database

Committee members identified the need forcreating an educational database that wouldcontain various aspects of titanium literature.

This information would be located on the ITA web site andwould assist in educating the public as well as show thattitanium is not a new metal to the industry.

The ITA web site would act as a clearinghouse of informationand consist of technical papers, relevant literature, pictures, references, articles, and case studies pertaining to all aspectsof titanium. The literature would also include the benefits, challenges, and recommendations for titanium.

To initiate this project, ITA would request the assistance ofits membership. All members are invited to submit relevantarticles or pictures of interest. All documents must includethe source and author. ITA will compile and create a catalogof papers for committee members to review at the October3rd Committee Meeting.
