FROM THE RECTOR 17 August 2014 Dear Friends, Wishing to escape from his enemies who accuse him of offending against the Jewish practices of purification (Mt 15:18), Jesus withdraws towards the pagan district of southern Lebanon. There once more he meets the question of separation of the clean from the unclean. It is the problem of the salvation of the pagans which he faces and which underlies the plea of the Canaanite woman. The woman herself does not argue that she has any right to demand the heavenly bread reserved in the beginning for the Jews. She only asks for the crumbs, but with such great faith and humility that in the end she will receive the fullness of salvation for which she was hoping. In Jesus’ special welcome for this foreigner, the Christians of the first century saw a foreshadowing of how they should behave towards those believers who came from paganism. They had to go out beyond the boundaries of an elitist religion, confined to a single race, and offer a universal salvation which springs from faith in Jesus Christ. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Baptism: We welcome into the family of the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism today, Peter Nathaniel Michael Matthews during the 10:00am Holy Eucharist. Please pray for Peter, and his parents and godparents, as they rejoice in sharing with us the Christian faith. Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The setting this morning is by the English organist and composer Hebert Sumsion (1899-1995), Sumsion taught in London and the United States before being appointed Organist of Gloucester Cathedral, upon the death of Herbert Brewer in 1928, he retired in 1967, having become of the world's longest-serving Cathedral organists. His compositional is gentle and pastoral and is primarily concerned with effectively communicating the text. Thomas Tallis' (c.1505-1585) short anthem, 'Verily, verily' is similarly direct in its text setting and probably dates from the Edwardian reforms of the English Church in the 1550s. Giuseppe Octavio Pitoni (1657-1743) was a successor to Palestrina as maestro di cappella at St John's Lateran basilica in Rome. His short motet 'cantata domino' ('Sing unto God') is probably his best known work. Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was a contemporary of Sumsion, and like Sumsion had a life long connection to Gloucester Cathedral. Much of Howells' organ works were inspired by that cavernous acoustic, and glorious stained-glass. Master Tallis' Testament was inspired by a performance of Ralph Vaughan-Williams' (1872-1958) Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis premiered in Gloucester Cathedral in 1910.

Mothers’ Union: The next meeting of St John’s MU Branch is on Wednesday 20 August. After the Healing Eucharist and a cuppa we will be sharing our favourite Bible verses. Everyone is welcome. For more information, please see Deacon Sandra or Margaret Winters.

St John’s Trivia Night is on Saturday 23 August starting at 7:00pm. Those who are keen have tables booked, brains trusts assembled and decorations planned. If not yet organised, just come to join in. St John’s: The Spirit soars for a capacity crowd listening to Tom Edwards’ Organ Recital on 9 August 2014

Everyday Heroes: How richly endowed is our Parish of St John’s with many talented people undertaking vital personal and often quiet ministries in their own way in areas where they can shine? How much stronger and more effective can they be (and how inspired can we be) when we talk with them (e.g. over a cuppa during fellowship after our services), listen to what makes them tick, and encourage them in their efforts. City2Surf 2014: St John’s was able to cheer on parishioner Michelle Hayden competing last Sunday (together with Mum, Judy and friend Ros, in support of “Sunnyfield”) in the Sydney City2Surf (completed in 2 hours 38 mintues and 31 seconds). It is just fifteen years (last Friday 15 August) since Michelle suffered horrific, critical injuries in a motor accident. It has been a long and still continuing recovery, in which this was yet another small but significant milestone, and for which we are truly grateful!

Offering Envelopes: New sets of envelopes for those who are using them may be collected from the back of the church. If you do not yet have a set, or would prefer to use our direct funds system, please talk with Robyn Couch. “Welcoming the Stranger” at St John’s: Please pray for “Relationships Australia”, “Community Connect”, “Cottage Counselling”, “Street Mission”, and other community groups working to help people who in different ways may be “on the outer”, and for friends, musical events and functions supporting these and other ministries such as Bear Cottage. These are all in addition to our own regular ministry programs. Red Cross Blood Service: The Mobile Blood Service is to be at Dee Why Surf Club this week on 18-21 August (12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, and 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby for information. New Guinea Martyrs: ABM invites all to the Feast of the New Guinea Martyrs, to be celebrated this year on Saturday, 6 September at 11:00am at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Cremorne (29 Waters Road). The Guest Preacher is Mrs Joy Freier, a primary and secondary school educator particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Joy’s husband is Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia and President of ABM. Refreshments will be served. For information please see the lobby noticeboard, or take a flyer from the table.

Children are always welcome in all our church services at St John's. In addition, at the 10:00am service there is Godly Play for children from three to twelve years, and our Crèche (unsupervised) where parents can take little ones if upset or restless while still following the service on the large TV screen.
