1. BACKGROUND Renown for its premium online learning services and solutions, Marshall Cavendish Online (MC Online) has collaborated with Diwa Learning Systems Inc. (Diwa) to establish itself as the market leader in the Philippines. To align itself better with the culture and learning environment in the Philippines, MC Online’s Learning Portal was distributed to over 150 schools by Diwa through its Genyo e-‐learning management system. The portal has been extremely well-‐received and has opened doorways for increasingly more schools to explore new learning opportunities with its broad spectrum of engaging multimedia activities and resources catering to different subjects. 3. INTEGRATING THE MC ONLINE / GENYO LEARNING PORTAL INTO LESSONS With the help of an ICT specialist (called Learning Integration Specialist in the Philippines) who aided in lesson preparation and classroom assistance, the portal was introduced first to the teachers in both schools who then commenced using the portal in lessons with their students. By adding a digital component to learning, the introduction of the portal has added a new dimension to teaching in the classroom and opened a gateway for students to explore education’s limitless possibilities. Said Mrs Zenaida B. Sabater, a third and seventh grade teacher at Roosevelt College Rodriguez, “I can now include multimedia aids like songs, games and videos to make my lessons more interesting for my students, who become more motivated to learn.” She observed that her students enjoyed these lessons very much and that using the portal helped facilitate the teaching-‐learning process. 4. RESULTS By providing an alternative form of teaching and learning to teachers and students, the web-‐based portal has introduced new methods of instruction to educators, and reinvented learning for students. This has not only engaged students more effectively than conventional teaching and learning methods, but has also helped them find joy in learning. Additionally, the frequent usage of the portal has enabled both teachers and students to become more computer-‐savvy, empowering them in today’s increasingly connected world.
4.1. SUCCESS ON THE NATIONAL STAGE Teachers from both schools have noted that students are more excited during lessons and contribute actively to class discussions. A positive outcome of this is that students tend to remember what they’ve learnt due to the fun nature of the lesson and thus perform better academically. This is exemplified in Notre Dame -‐ RVM College where students have consistently qualified for and achieved outstanding results at regional and national competitions, earning the school a reputation as one of the top-‐performing schools in the country. Miss Laiza Mae M. Tabuada, a third year math teacher noted, “Our students now excel in science and mathematics competitions. We always rank first! Students are now adept at English Extemporaneous Speaking too.”

4.2. TAKING PRIDE IN LEARNING With animated games and fun activities to enliven students’ pursuit of knowledge, MC Online’s digital innovations have helped sharpen students’ skills and inspired a generation of students who look forward to exploring the vast horizon of knowledge and information at the tips of their fingers. Precious Love D. Mullet, a third year student at Notre Dame -‐ RVM College said, “I really like the games because it’s so easy to learn with them and I can gain more knowledge and ideas. For example, after playing the games, I can now add, subtract, multiply and divide faster!” As students find themselves becoming more adroit at various skills and concepts, they start to look forward to lessons using the portal, and even explore the portal at their own initiative. “Every time we have e-‐learning classes, I anticipate the lesson and the method in which it will be presented to me so as a result, I pay more attention to the lesson,” added Aya Denise M. Bautista, a fourth year at Roosevelt College Rodriguez. “Even if we do not have e-‐learning sessions at school, I still log into my account at home to explore Genyo.”
Third year student at Notre Dame -‐ RVM College, Aisha I. Magapisa commented on her ability to learn more with the portal: “Genyo is helping me to learn things that I didn’t know previously. For example, when I do the online math practices and get my answers wrong, the portal’s auto-‐grading system provides helpful guided answers that teach me how to properly solve the problems or questions.”

4.3. CONNECTING TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND PARENTS As the world globalises at an increasingly fast pace, it is becoming imperative to be digitally connected in today’s society. The learning portal’s web-‐based platform provides users with an opportunity to wield an advantage on the technological frontier. Being foremost a digital curriculum, the portal enables users to inevitably pick up computer skills when navigating the interface. Miss Mary Jane D. Loquis, a fourth year English teacher at Notre Dame – RVM College noted, “The students’ mindset on the use of online activities is positive. Online classes, quizzes, polls and assignments are a part of their life now! The interactive aspect of the activities also helps teachers become more computer savvy.” Besides enabling users to hone their computer skills, the portal also helps reinforce the connections amongst teachers, students and parents. Teachers are able to interact with their students better when the class is more vocal in classroom discussions due to the portal’s fun games and learning tools. Students are able to collaborate with their peers on activities like online voting during Student Government Council Elections. Parents too become more involved in their children’s learning progress when they see their children using the portal at home. For instance, they become aware of their child’s competency in various subjects by observing how he or she fares in online assessments.
“I noticed that Charlotte progressed a lot in her studies once she started using Genyo. For example, the science programme really helped her in Chemistry -‐ she can remember all the elements in the Chemistry table without any trouble! I think the lessons’ visual aids really helped make it easier for her in her learning process,” observed Jemelita B. Dulla, mother of seventh year Roosevelt College student, Charlotte Goddeth B. Dulla. The portal has indeed been well received by teachers, parents and students. Aya Denise summed up her positive experience of e-‐learning on the portal, “What I like about Genyo is that it combines learning and fun. I had to use my older cousins’ old books and notes as references before but now, I can watch videos, do puzzles and play games to learn!” MC Online’s premier multimedia curriculum infuses effective instructional strategies with engaging multimedia activities, creating a perfect synergy that encapsulates the best pedagogical practices with the pleasure of learning to cogently engage students and help them excel.
