The Cardinal Timothy Manning House of Prayer for Priests opened in 1975 under the guidance and inspiration of Cardinal Timothy Manning and Jesuit Father John McAnulty. It was their vision that there be a special place exclusively for priests to nourish their spiritual lives and to pray for the people whom they serve. The Immaculate Heart Sisters generously loaned a portion of their property, at the site of their motherhouse, to help facili- tate this dream. In 1995, Cardinal Roger Mahony expanded and rededicated the House of Prayer to serve the large number of priests using the facility. In honor of his predecessor, Cardinal Mahony officially renamed the new facility the Cardinal Timothy Manning House of Prayer for Priests. Today, the House of Prayer offers retreats (individually directed, preached and private), spiritual direction, days of recollection, daily Sacrament of Reconciliation, as well as providing a place for priests’ support groups to meet. The facility consists of three primary buildings: McAnulty Hall, the original house; Bethany, which houses the guest units; and Emmaus, the main building. Msgr. Jack Stoeger currently serves as Director, and Jesuit Fa- ther Christopher Cartwright is the Associate Director. The fol- lowing Spiritual Directors serve one day a week: Father Jim Clarke (Monday, Eng/Sp), Jesuit Father José de Jesús Sanchez (Tuesday, Eng/Sp), Missionary of the Holy Spirit Father Eugenio Cárdenas (Wednesday, Eng/Sp), and Benedictine Father Joseph Brennan (Thursday). For nearly 20 years the Order of St. Gregory the Great has com- mitted to the Cardinal Timothy Manning House of Prayer for Priests, taking it on as its apostolate. Their gracious involve- ment and generosity in supporting the House of Prayer’s mis- sion of reflection, renewal and direction continues to be an in- tegral part of our ministry.
