    MODEM

It is a computer peripheral that allows you to connect and

communicate with other computer via telephone line.Modem changes the digital data from your computer intoanalog data, a format that can be carried over telephonelines.

Vice-Versa the the modem receiving the call thenchanges the analog signal back into digital data that thecomputer can understand.

    EHTERNET CARD

Newer Ethernet cards installed inside desktopcomputers use the PCI standard and are usuallyinstalled by the motherboard manufacturer.

Ethernet cards may operate at different network

speeds depending on the protocol standard theysupport.

Old Ethernet cards were capable only of the10 Mbps maximum speed offered by Ethernet

    originally.

Modern Ethernet adapters all support the 100Mbps Fast Ethernet standard and an increasingnumber now also offer Gigabit Ethernet support at 1

    Gbps (1000 Mbps)

    RJ-45CONNECTOR

The Registered Jack-45 connector is commonly used for

network cabling and for telephony applications.

It is an eight wire connector which is commonly used toconnect computers on the local area networks, especially

    Ethernets.

It is similar to telephone connector RJ-11 except that it has

eight wires as compared to 4 in RJ-11.

    Connect a computer to a cable/DSL modem'sLAN port.

Connect a router's WAN port to a cable/DSLmodem's LAN port.

Connect a router's LAN port to a switch/hub'suplink port. normally used for expandingnetwork

Network switches appear nearly identical to network

hubs, but a switch contains more "intelligence" than anetwork hub.

Network switches are capable of inspecting datapackets as they are received, determining the sourceand destination device of that packet, and forwarding itappropriately.

By delivering each message only to the connected

device it was intended for, a network switch conservesnetwork bandwidth and offers generally betterperformance than a hub.

Switches differ from hubs in that they can have ports ofdifferent speed.

    It unicasts the packets

    Routers

A router is a computer whose software andhardware are usually tailored to the tasks of

    routing and forwarding.

This device routes the information packetbetween two or more physically or logicallyconnected networks.

It is different from Bridge as this uses logicaladdress while bridge uses physical address.

    Gateway

This device usually a server is used to communicatebetween dissimilar networks i.e. networks with

different protocols. e.g. to connect a LAN of BVIMR with a LAN of

    BVCOE.

In enterprises, the gateway is the computer that

routes the traffic from the workstation to theoutside world.

In homes, the gateway is the ISP that connects theuser to the Internet.
