Step 1 - Select:

 I/O modules

Selecting Compact I/OModulesThe 1769 Compact I/O modules can be used with a CompactLogix controller, as wellas for expansion I/O in a MicroLogix 1500 controller assembly or in an assembly witha 1769-ADN DeviceNet adapter module. Unless connected to a MicroLogix 1500 base, each bank of I/O modules must include its own power supply.

Install the I/O modules on a panel with two mounting screws or on a DIN rail. Themodules mechanically lock together by means of a tongue-and-groove design andhave an integrated communication bus that is connected from module to module by amoveable bus connector.

Each I/O module includes a built-in removable terminal block with finger-safe coverfor connections to I/O sensors and actuators. The terminal block is behind a door atthe front of the module. I/O wiring can be routed from beneath the module to the I/Oterminals.

About Power SupplyDistance Ratings

Check each module’s specification table for the power supply distance rating. Thisindicates how many slot positions the module can be from the power supply.

Digital I/O Modules Choose digital I/O modules when you need these features.

Most output modules have built-in surge suppression to reduce the effects of high-voltage transients. Use an additional suppression device if an output is being used tocontrol inductive devices, such as relays, motor starters, solenoids, or motors.Additional suppression is especially important if your inductive device is in series withor parallel to hard contacts, such as pushbuttons or selector switches.

Add a suppression device directly across the coil of an inductive device to reduce theeffects of voltage transients caused by interrupting the current to that device and toprolong the life of the switch contacts.

Type of Module Description

Input

An input module responds to an input signal in the followingmanner:

Input filtering limits the effect of voltage transients caused bycontact bounce and/or electrical noise. If not filtered, voltagetransients could produce false data. All input modules use inputfiltering.

Optical isolation shields logic circuits from possible damage dueto electrical transients.

 Logic circuits process the signal.

An input LED indicator turns on or off indicating the status of thecorresponding input device.

Output

An output module controls the output signal in the followingmanner:

Logic circuits determine the output status.

An output LED indicator displays the status of the output signal.

Optical isolation separates module logic and bus circuits fromfield power.

The output driver turns the corresponding output on or off.

1769-IR6 RTD Input Module

Two-wire RTD Configuration

Three-wire RTD Configuration

Each channel is individually configurable via software for two- or three-wire RTD ordirect-resistance input devices. Channels are compatible with four-wire sensors, butthe fourth sense wire is not used. Two programmable-excitation current values (0.5mA and 1.0 mA) are provided, to limit RTD self-heating.

Important: The module accepts input from RTDs with up to three wires. If yourapplication requires a four-wire RTD, one of the two lead compensation wires is notused, and the RTD is treated like a three-wire sensor. The third wire provides leadwire compensation.

When configured for RTD inputs, the module can convert the RTD readings intolinearized digital-temperature readings in °C or °F. When configured for resistanceanalog inputs, the module can convert voltages into linearized resistance values inohms. The module assumes that the direct resistance input signal is linear prior toinput to the module.

Description

Benefits Reduced Wiring Time

Reduced Wiring Errors

Wiring system cables are pre-tested to ensure 100% accurate connections andeliminate the need for point-to-point checking of wiring. No more crossed wires andloose connections between the I/O module and the terminal block. Even one error inwiring 128 I/O points in a point-to-point system may require a complete check of thewiring. Wiring errors can take several minutes to track down and correct before thepanel is ready for startup. When IFMs and cables are snapped in place, they fit everytime — no need to find the wrong or loose connection, resulting in a much higherrate of success at system startup.

Wiring is completed in a fraction of the time when wiring systems are used ascompared with the traditional method of wiring each point to the I/O swing arm andfield-side terminal blocks. Pre-wired cables are factory-wired to the I/O wiring arm onone end and a connector for the Interface Module (IFM) on the other. IFMs enhancethe capability of the I/O systems with added terminations, field-side LED statusindicators, isolation circuits, overcurrent protection, and higher amp outputs. Bothstandard and specific build-to-order length cables are available, providing the correctlength for any panel in a neat, space-efficient wiring solution.

Connecting to Allen-Bradley I/O is convenient with Allen-Bradley Interface Modulesand Cables. Unlike conventional terminal blocks, they connect through pre-wiredcables to digital and analog I/O for the Bulletin 1746 SLC, Bulletin 1756 ControlLogix,Bulletin 1769 Compact I/O for CompactLogix and MicroLogix 1500, and Bulletin1771/PLC-5 platforms. The interface modules are mounted onto a standard DIN #3Rail. Pre-printed adhesive label cards containing field-wiring information are availablefor each interface module and I/O module combination. Wiring systems are availablefor over 100 different I/O modules and over 50 analog modules. In addition, we offera custom wiring system program for those applications that do not meet your systemrequirements.

Labeling and Marking

Simplified Design

Design engineers can simplify their panel drawings by calling out an IFM and pre-wired cable instead of having to detail every single wire and terminal block on theirdrawings. Simplified panel drawings aid not only the installer, but also the endcustomer who receives the panel.

Pre-printed, I/O-specific adhesive label strips for quick marking of IFM terminals savelabor compared with point-to-point wiring that requires labor intensive wire markers.Pre-wired cables require no wire labels. Pre-printed I/O-specific labels ensure neat,easy-to-read identification of wires and I/O points for all users. The marking of traditional terminal blocks has even caused some OEMs to movetoward a high-tech approach of plotting markers, requiring additional equipment inthe form of a plotter system and a PC to run the plotter software.

Pre-wired cables eliminate the time and costs associated with stripping and cuttingwires. Routing wires is much easier with wiring systems, since engineers only have toworry about routing one pre-wired cable versus the 20 or 40 wires needed in thetraditional wiring method.

Reduced Wire Preparation and Routing

Cable interconnections for a wiring system can be up to 30 times faster to install thantraditional point-to-point wiring, enabling OEMs and panel builders using wiringsystems to build panels faster and produce more machines.

Increased Volume and Productivity

Normal terminal blocks can’t offer the benefits of IFMs, such as LED indication oneach I/O point. Wiring systems improve system startup and ease troubleshooting andmaintenance. Diagnostic capabilities in the form of fuses, blown fuse indication, andfield-side ON-State LEDs — in a reduced space — allow maintenance personnel toquickly locate faults, reduce downtime, and improve overall productivity.

Faster Troubleshooting and Easier Maintenance

A wiring system involves an IFM and the cable, versus the block, barrier, jumper, markers, wires, and swing arms associated with traditional hardwired systems. Therefore, it requires fewer components and, in turn, less inventory and lowercarrying costs.

Design Flexibility

To develop a cost-effective system, the hardware components must meet the needs ofthe design engineer. Rockwell Automation provides the broadest range of digital andanalog systems in the industry. Allen-Bradley Wiring Systems deliver a lower life-cyclecost.

Fewer Parts, Less Inventory and Lower CarryingCost

The pre-wired cables and IFMs organize the wiring in your panel and provide aconsistent look. Pre-printed adhesive labels for the terminals neatly identify field-wiring connections, which correspond to the I/O module address. A large markingarea is also available for identifying I/O information on the IFM.

Quality-Looking Panels

An increasing trend in the industry is to pack more products into the same DIN Railspace. Wiring systems support this trend, as they require less DIN Rail space thantraditional terminal blocks. For example, if an OEM were to use a 40-point IFM inplace of 40 terminal blocks, DIN Rail space can be reduced by more than 50%. All IFMs have terminals for connecting the I/O field wiring. In addition, extra terminal, sensor, fusible IFMs, and relay IFMs contain common terminals that are used aspower busses for sensor and actuators. No additional terminal blocks are needed toprovide power to the sensors/actuators — saving valuable panel/DIN Rail space. To further reduce panel space, narrow IFMs (i.e., Cat. No. 1492-IFM20FN) have beendesigned. They require 45% less space than the standard length IFMs, making themwell-suited for tightly packed enclosures. The high density narrow IFMs have two rowsof 10 field-wiring terminals with an overall length of 60 mm (2.36 in.)

Digital InterfaceModules (IFMs)

Digital IFMs are available with either a 20- or 40-pin cable connector. This isdetermined by the number of connections required for the I/O module.

40-pin Connection Interface Module

The number of terminals varies with the type of IFM — from one to four terminalsper I/O point.Standard terminal IFMs provide one field-side wiring terminal per programmablecontroller input or output point, as well as enough terminals for the I/O modulepower connections. The standard terminals are ideal for applications where the I/Odevice commons are terminated in the field or remotely from the I/O panel.

Standard Terminal Interface Module

Extra terminal IFMs provide two or four field-side terminals per input or outputpoint. Non-isolated IFMs have two terminals per input or output point. Isolated IFMshave two or four terminals per input or output.

Isolated IFMs have terminals isolated into 8 or 16 groups, which allows each group ofI/O devices to reference a different power source. The extra terminal IFMs arebeneficial in applications where the I/O devices are terminated within the same panelas the I/O modules — eliminating the need for many additional terminal blocks.

Extra Terminal Interface Module

Sensor IFMs provide three field-side terminals per input point. The middle and lowerrows of the terminals are commoned together in groups of 18, and serve as powerbusses for 3-wire sensor types of devices — eliminating additional terminals, blocks, and jumpering systems.

Fusible Digital IFMs Fusible modules provide a convenient method of adding overcurrent protections intoyour programmable controller wiring. These modules have 5 x 20 fuse holders on-board and are available with and without blown fuse indication. The 24V, 120V, and240V blown fuse indicators reduce the troubleshooting time to locate and replace ablown fuse on the IFM. Fusible modules have an easy-to-remove, transparentPlexiglass cover that prevents objects from contacting fuse circuitry under normaloperation. Removal of fuses from the standard fuse holder is aided by fuse pullers(fuses not provided). The fusible modules also have two or four terminals per I/Opoint to create a power bus for input and output load connections. Fusible modulesare available in both isolated (Cat. No. 1492-IFM20F-FS24-2) and nonisolated (Cat.No.1492-IFM20F-F24-2) versions. There are a select number of fusible IFMs availablefor input modules.

The field-side power source is distributed throughindividual on-board 5 x 20 fuse holders. The AIFMs have a 24V DC blown fuseindicators to reduce the troubleshooting time required to locate and replace a blownfuse. Fusible modules have an easy-to-remove transparent Plexiglass cover to preventobjects from contacting fuse circuitry under normal operation. Standard fuse holdersreside in the IFM, aiding in the removal of a fuse with a fuse puller (fuses are notincluded). Isolation switch plugs, or “dummy fuses”, are also available to isolate aninput circuit once power is removed. In addition, once the circuit has been isolatedand power restored, the input loop current can be measured in 2-wire transmitterapplications. The fusible modules also have three or five terminals per I/O analoginput point to create a power bus for device shield and power connections.Analog fusible modules have an on-board DIP switch to easily connect unused inputsto the module common — reducing wiring on the field side. You no longer needextra jumper wires to properly terminate unused inputs as is recommended inBulletins 1746, 1756, 1769, and 1771 I/O. Inputs are jumped via a DIP switch on aper channel basis.

Relay and Expandable Modules

Relay and Expandable Interface Modules (XIM) were developed to maximize theeffectiveness of users’ applications that require output contact ratings greater than 2A. Driving large loads up to 10 A for applications such as motor starters is nowpossible with Bulletin 1492 Wiring Systems. In addition, the Relay Modules provide ameans to isolate output points. The Relay and Expandable product line consists of a Relay Master module andExpander Module(s) with expander cable. The Relay Master modules provide theconnection for the 20- or 40-pin cable connectors for the pre-wired cable. There arefive types of expander XIMs: eight-channel relay, sixteen-channel relay, eight-channelfused, sixteen-channel relay with fusing, and eight-channel feed-through.Expander Module capabilities are offered in eight-channel and sixteen-channelincrements. After using 8 or 16 channels of I/O for relays (master relay module),design engineers can use expander modules for the other I/O point needs. Theflexibility means that they work with relays, fuses, and feed-through modules. Inaddition, the expander modules can be added when system expansion is required.

Catalog Number ExplanationCustom Wiring System Program1492 Custom Wiring Systems opens up a new capability for the Allen-Bradleycustomer. When standard wiring systems do not do the job, customers can ask formodification or a completely new design that fits their application requirements.

Through the Custom Wiring System Program, customers can provide their designinput for an interface module or cable with no up front fees and a minimum orderquantity of only thirty-five (35) units.

In addition, we use our “Fastrack Customer Solutions” capabilities which can have adesign in the customer’s hands within 8 to 10 weeks. The custom designs are donedirectly between the customer's engineer and the Rockwell Automation engineer. Wehave removed the middle man so we can get the design right the first time. Eachdesign is approved by the customer prior to starting manufacturing of the customer’scustom product. This is done through the customer reviewing bills of materials, schematics, and assembly drawings and signing them off. The distributor salesperson in kept in the loop but direct customer contact is a must during the designcycle. The process starts with the distributor and customer completing the “Requestfor Quote for Custom Interface Module and Cable” form. This form is then e-mailedinto [email protected] for processing within RockwellAutomation Marketing and Engineering.

UL and CSA certifications are also possible on the custom modules. Minimal fees mayapply.

Use the 1764 MicroLogix 1500 packaged controller when the Compact I/O system isthe modular expansion I/O (8 modules maximum) for the base I/O. You can have upto 16 modules when you use the MicroLogix 1500 Series C processor with a Series Bbase and RSLogix 500 software, version 5.0 or later.

You can use a 1769 power supply if the power capacity of the embedded MicroLogix1500 power supply is insufficient to drive all the I/O modules in the system.

A maximum of one 1769 power supply and one communication cable can be used ina MicroLogix 1500 system, allowing for two banks of I/O modules (one connecteddirectly to the controller, and the other connected via the cable). The local bank(bank 0, which includes the controller) supports eight modules and the expansionbank supports eight modules, for a maximum total of sixteen I/O modules in onesystem. Each I/O bank requires its own power supply (bank 0 uses the controller’sembedded power supply.

Important: The expansion power supply cannot be connected directly to a controllerthat has an embedded power supply, such as the MicroLogix 1500 controller. It mustbe connected using one of the expansion cables. Only one power supply (embeddedor expansion) may be used on an I/O bank. Exceeding these limitations may damagethe power supply and result in unexpected operation.

Checking the MicroLogix Firmware Revision

MicroLogix 1500 Packaged Controllers

Important: If your processor is at an older revision, you must upgrade the operatingsystem to FRN 3 or later to use an expansion cable and power supply. On the Internet,go to:

http://www.ab.com/plclogic/prodinfo/plcweb/products/mlogix/ABMicroIndex.html

to download the operating system upgrade. Type MicroLogix 1500 and go to Tools andTips.

To use a MicroLogix 1500 controller with a 1769 expansion I/O power supply, verifythat you have the following:

MicroLogix 1500 processor, catalog number 1764-LSP, series A, revision C and later

Operating system version: firmware revision number (FRN) 3 and later

You can check the FRN by looking at word S: 59 (operating-system firmware revisionnumber) in the status file.

Category Guidelines

Capacity

The 1769-ADN adapter can communicate with up to 30 Compact I/O modules on a singleDeviceNet node.

You can have a maximum of three banks of I/O connected with up to two communicationexpansion cables.

The adapter supports a total of:

180 words of input data from the I/O modules.

180 words of output data to the I/O modules.

724 words of configuration data for the I/O modules.

A typical 16 point input module uses one input word, and a typical 16 point output moduleuses one input and output word.

Configuration

The adapter must be the first and leftmost module in the system (the first module of bank 1).

I/O banks must be connected using a bus communication cable (for example, 1769-CRL1).

Each bank of I/O must have its own power supply.

Each module type has its own distance rating (the number of modules from the powersupply). Each module must be within its distance rating. The 1769-ADN adapter has a distancerating of four, therefore the adapter must be within four modules of the power supply.

I/O modules are not required between either the adapter and an end cap or between thepower supply and an end cap.

An end cap terminator (for example, 1769-ECR or 1769-ECL) must be used on the last I/Obank.

Address slots contiguously left-to-right within each bank. Power supplies, cables, and end capsdo not use an address.

A bank of I/O can have a maximum of 16 modules with a maximum of eight on either side ofthe power supply, depending upon module loading of the power supply. The maximum amountof current each bank supports in one direction (either side of the power supply) is 2 A at 5Vdc and 1 A at 24V dc.

1769-ADN DeviceNet Adapter Module

Use the 1769-ADN DeviceNet adapter module when the Compact I/O system is theprimary I/O for the adapter (30 modules maximum). The 1769-ADN adapter allowsthe 1769 Compact I/O system to be used with a DeviceNet Master.

Selecting Power Supplies

Compact I/O power supplies distribute power from either side of the power supply. For example, a 2 A at 5V dc power supply (1769-PA2, 1769-PB2) can provide 1 A tothe right side of the power supply and 1 A to the left. A 4 A at 5V dc power supply(1769-PA4, 1769-PB4) can provide 2 A to the right side of the power supply and 2 Ato the left.

1769 Power Supplies

1769 I/O Power SuppliesEach additional bank of I/O modules requires a 1769 power supply. Place 1769 I/Omodules to the left or the right of the 1769 power supply. As many as eight I/Omodules can be placed on each side of the power supply.

Each 1769 module also has a power supply distance rating (the number of modulesfrom the power supply). Each module must be located within its distance rating. Seethe specifications for the module to determine its distance rating.

Validating System Power

After you calculate the current consumed by your system, use the graphs on page 91to verify that your power supply has adequate capacity for its bank of I/O modules.Compare the graphs to your calculated totals for the following:

 Total 5V dc

 Total 24V dc

Total 24V dc sensor power (1769-PA2 only)

If your power supply load is at or near the limits of the allowable ranges shown in thegraphs on page 91, you must add an additional I/O bank.

Important: The additional I/O bank must include a power supply. An endcap/terminator (1769-ECR or 1769-ECL) must also be used if the I/O bank is the lastin the system.

1768 Power SuppliesThe 1768 backplane requires one 1768 power supply. The power supply is a dualinput supply that operates in multiple ranges. The power supply also offers a 24V dcexternal power source. The CompactLogix power supply requires that a 1768CompactLogix controller be installed to power the system.

• The power supply sends 24V dc to the controller located in slot 0.

• The controller converts the 24V dc to 5V dc and 24V dc and distributes it asneeded.

– 5V and 24V power to 1769 I/O modules on the right side of the controller

– 24V power to communication or motion modules on the left side of thecontroller

Calculate System Power Requirements

Compact I/O power supplies distribute power from either side of the power supply. For example, a 2 A at 5V dc power supply (1769-PA2, 1769-PB2) can provide 1 A tothe right side of the power supply and 1 A to the left. A 4 A at 5V dc power supply(1769-PA4, 1769-PB4) can provide 2 A to the right side of the power supply and 2 Ato the left.

The 1768 modules do not have a distance rating to the 1768 power supply. For the1769 I/O modules in the 1768 system, the distance rating is from the controller andnot the 1768 power supply.

Step 5 - Select:

panel mount or DIN rail mount

appropriate number of panels orDIN rails based on the number ofmodules and the physical layout

one end cap per controller system

Mounting a Compact I/OSystem

You can panel mount or DIN rail mount a CompactLogix system. The CompactLogixsystem must be mounted so that the modules are horizontal to each other.

If you separate modules into multiple banks, the banks can be vertical or horizontalto each other.

Ground the System

You can ground a Compact I/O system through the:

 non-coated, steel DIN rail.

panel-mount screw hole containing the ground strap.

Page 128: 1769 SelectionGuide feb 06 - Rockwell Automation · 2019. 8. 15. · Publication 1769-SG002E-EN-P — January 2007 Compact I/O Modules What's new: 1769-IG16 1769-OG16 1769-OB32T 1769-BOOLEAN

Divide I/O Modules into Separate Banks

If you divide the modules into multiple banks:

the controller or adapter must be in the leftmost position of the first bank.

each bank needs its own power supply.

use expansion cables to connect the banks.

the last I/O bank requires an end cap.

Add End Caps

The controller or adapter is the leftmost module in the Compact I/O system. Thecontroller or adapter has built-in termination, so the leftmost end of the system isterminated.

The final I/O bank in the Compact I/O system needs an end cap on the end withoutthe expansion cable.

Power Supply Distance Rating

Modules can be placed to the left and the right of the power supply. As many as eightI/O modules can be placed on each side of the power supply.

Each 1769 module also has a power supply distance rating (the number of modulesfrom the power supply). Each module must be located within its distance rating. Seethe specifications for the module to determine its distance rating.

The CompactLogix controller has a power supply distance rating of four modules. Thecontroller must be the leftmost module in the first bank of the system. The maximumconfiguration for the first bank of a CompactLogix controller is the controller andthree I/O modules to the left of the power supply and eight I/O modules to the right ofthe power supply.

Mounting Dimensions

You can mount the 1769 Compact I/O system with a dimensional template.
