A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 November 8, 2015

My dear parish family, Last week we distributed Fr. Michael Gaitley’s little booklet, 33 Days to Morning Glory: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat in Preparation for Marian Consecration. If you’re among those who took a copy and are joining us on this journey to a deeper knowledge of four great saints (Louis de Montfort, Maximilian Kolbe, Mother Teresa, and John Paul II) and a deeper devotion to Jesus and Mary, here are a few tips and things to keep in mind as you go through the booklet. First, the reading for Day 1 should have been done on Nov. 5. That way, doing a reading a day for 33 days, we’d all finish on Dec. 7 and be ready, if we wish, to do the prayer of consecration to Mary on Dec. 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. You defeat the purpose of Fr. Gaitley’s book if you just zip through it all at once or in a day or a week. If you’ve done this, you can still go back and do a more reflective, careful, medi-tative reading of each section day by day. Second, Fr. Gaitley notes that another way of saying “consecration to Mary” is “consecration to Jesus through Mary.” Why through Mary? Because Jesus came into the world through Mary and continues to partner with her in saving the world. She’s a help to us in partnering with Jesus and staying close to Him. Fr. Gaitley looks at the concept of “consecration” from many angles. One reason to read his book is to better understand what consecration means. Third, consecration doesn’t mean that you’re making a permanent vow or committing yourself to something it would be sinful not to live up to. You’re simply entrusting yourself to God through the care of Mary, promising to the best of your ability to follow her exam-ple, and asking her to dispose of your prayers and works as she sees fit, for the glory of God and the good of others. Finally, reading the book and/or making the consecration are optional. Doing God’s will in all things is not. The hope is that the book and the consecration will foster the accep-tance and doing of God’s will. In the end, that’s what this is all about. Most of us can use help in this regard. More on all of this before Dec. 8. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

KNOWING OUR FAITH XLIII. FAITH, HOPE, LOVE

The four cardinal virtues we touched on last lesson are called natural virtues be-cause, although they require grace to reach perfection, they spring from our human nature. The theological virtues of faith, hope, and love, so-called because they have God as their object, are of a different kind. They are infused by God, gifts given to us over and above our human nature, hence supernatural, enabling us to become some-thing more than human nature on its own could ever become, namely children of God, ultimately saints of God. The gift of faith enables us to believe in God and all that God has revealed and to commit ourselves entirely to Him. As against superstition, faith is founded on and never contradicts reason. As against rationalism, faith believes what reason alone cannot demonstrate. So, for example, we believe that Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man. This cannot be proved to everyone’s satisfaction, but given Jesus’ teach-ing, His miracles, His effect on those who were and are close to Him, it is reasonable to believe in Him, though reason alone does not prove what we believe. The gift of hope gives us confidence that the promises of God will be fulfilled in us, that in spite of our imperfections and because of God’s mercy and love, we will attain to everlasting life. Hope is opposed to the presumption that thinks it deserves salvation and has it made, and to the despair that thinks it is beyond redemption. Our help and hope are in God who made heaven and earth, and with Him all things are possible. Love has many meanings. It describes the strong physical attraction between a man and a woman, the bond between friends, and the natural affection family mem-bers feel for each other. All these loves are of the natural order. We experience them simply by being human. The supernatural gift of love, which God bestows on us, pro-tects and perfects these others, as C.S. Lewis so wonderfully articulates in his little masterpiece The Four Loves. This supernatural love is called agape in Greek. We might call it God-love be-cause it is the kind of selfless, serving, sacrificial love God has for us, manifested per-fectly in the life of Jesus, and radiated by the saints. It is the love we were born to make our own. It is the reason our life on earth is properly called “the school of love.”

Stewardship and the Gospel

The Gospel from Mark contains one of the most

repeated and utilized accounts about what it means to practice stewardship, as well as the

requirements that need to be met in order to be a good steward. It is the story of the poor

widow who placed “two small coins worth a few cents” into the offering basket. Although

we often call this the narrative of the “Widow’s Mite,” we should keep in mind that a “mite”

was a medieval English coin, and that term was never used until the Bible was rewritten during the Reformation — “Mite” was first used in the

King James version of the Bible. However, the significance of the story is not what we might call the coins; it is what Jesus

was trying to tell us by sharing what happened. The Lord parallels an oft-repeated stewardship saying, “Not equal giving, but equal sacrifice.” It is not the size of our gifts of gratitude to God

that matter; it is the idea that each of us as Catholics and Christians makes an equal sacri-

fice in our efforts to be good stewards. The Lord tells us, “For they have all con-

tributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her

whole livelihood.” Although He does not say it specifically, what Jesus is declaring to us is,

“She trusts Me.” Do we? Do our sacrifices re-flect that trust?

DID YOU KNOW?????? Haven’t doctors, scientists, and commen-tators said that embryonic stem cell research will lead to the cure of many diseases.

Some have made this claim , but in fact this is largely speculation. Embryonic stem cells have never treated a human pa-tient, and animal trails suggest that they are too genetically unstable and too likely to form lethal tumors to be used for treatment any time soon. Years ago it was said that stem cells from embryos would be the most useful because they are so fast-growing and versatile, able to make virtually any kind of cell. But those advantages become disadvan-tages when these cells make tumors, creating a condition worse than the disease. Yet many supporters remain wedded to this approach, having invested a great deal of money and effort and hoping they can still make it work. This kind of exaggerated “promise” has mis-led researchers and patient groups before—most obviously in the case of fetal tissue from abortions, which a decade ago was said to promise miracle cures and has produced nothing of the kind
