In 1523, an English animal trainer named John Fitzherbert said,

"The dog must be trained when he is a whelp, or else it will not

be [trained]; for it is hard to make an old dog [find a new

scent]." Today, we'd simply say: "You can't teach an old dog

new tricks."

It sounds good, but is it really true?

A show on the Discovery Channel called Mythbusters likes to take timeworn adages like

this one and see if they're true or false. So MythBusters' hosts Jamie Hyneman and

Adam Savage decided to go after this one, too. They found a pair of aging Alaskan

malamutes who didn't know a single trick. Malamutes are known for their

stubbornness. As 7-year-old canines, siblings Bobo and Cece were equivalent to a

couple of 50-year-olds in dog years, arguably qualifying them for the "old dog"

category. After four days of training, Bobo and Cece proved Fitzherbert flat wrong. Each

could heel, sit, lie down, stay, and shake upon command from Jamie and Adam.

Their conclusion? Myth busted! You can teach old dogs new tricks!*

So what? So what would you say if God was wanting to do something new around

Calvary? I don’t mean new exterior paint (although that will be happening, thank you

Jackie and Swampy and team!)

I don’t mean our new staff, although we are grateful for Carolyn and Eva joining us in

official capacities, and for Emily our Ekklesia Summer Intern!

What new thing might God be wanting to do in each one of us and through each one of

us??

The Prophet Isaiah says in Chapter 43:18-19

18 “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?

God is up to something…something new! Something life changing! Something formerly

believed to be impossible:

“I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

God is up to something good, something life-giving! I’m not exactly sure what it is, but

I know I want to be a part of it! Change or newness means that things will not be

exactly the same as they once were.

“But we’ve never done ‘it’ that way before!!” Those are the words of a dying church!

God is so not done with Calvary yet!!

The challenge is for us to be open to what God and the Holy Spirit are doing:

Luke 12:34

Due to VBS occurring after the July Caller deadline—a more detailed report will appear in the August Caller. However, a BIG Thank You is well deserved in the meantime to everyone who donated items, helped in any way, and made the Eagle Express a high flying success for the children!!!

To invite others to join us in worship…

To greet someone new and make a new friend…

To volunteer to help in a new capacity…

To pray that God will guide you into an avenue of service that you’ve not tried

before…!

How do we grow spiritually?

How do we experience growth and transformation? By cultivating a teachable spirit,

and being willing to let God “teach us new tricks”, if you will.

Please join me in praying that we can be attuned to what God is desiring for us as we

"...become a worshiping community for all, abiding in Christ, demonstrating

mercy, grace, and love!"

See you in worship,

Change. Some people welcome it with open arms, others do everything they can to avoid it. Wheth-er you fall into the first category, or the second, change always comes. The youth groups have begun the changes that inevitable come along with the beginning of summer. We had two seniors in our High School Youth group this year, Brooke Steele and Sierra Clough. This year has been full of new things for Kevin and I as youth directors, but watching these girls walk across the graduation stage to get their diplomas, has definitely been the one new thing that I don’t think we had really prepared for. These girls have grown into amazing young women that we love dearly, and the idea of saying goodbye, was more difficult than we anticipated. Kevin began working with the youth groups here when Sierra and Brooke were freshmen in high school, just beginning the journey that they have recently completed. I began volunteering a little over a year later, meeting them and getting to know them then. We have spent many youth groups with them, talking about different spiritual topics. We have had them join us on retreats, mission trips, and outreach projects. Watching them grow as young women, and seeing the path that their journey of faith has taken, has been a privilege. This past year especially, we have become even closer. As we all know, senior year comes with it all kinds of challenges and a whole range of emotions. These girls have allowed us to share in many mo-ments with them, allowing us to guide them, and trusting us with their frustrations, fears, joys, and celebrations. They have looked to the Lord, for help and comfort, as well as praise and thanks. It has been a year of laughter (oh so much laughter) and tears (both good and bad). We are blessed to have the remainder of the summer to share with both of them and we will be taking full advantage of it. Sending them off, will feel so much like sending our own children. Following Brooke and Sierra’s graduation ceremony, Kevin and I both looked at each other and said, “This is HARD!” The good news is that we have full faith that they will take their love the Lord, and their ability and willingness to look to him for answers, with them as they move on to the next season of their lives. And of course, we have NO doubt that the Lord will continue to stay with them, guide them, and love them, no matter where they go. Thank you Calvary, for supporting them along their journey. And thank you Sierra and Brooke, for giving us the opportunity to have you in our lives. We are better having you in them.

Getting to Know Our Youth

The Youth Group is working with a group called SLAM (Students Learning About

Missions) at the Yakima Indian Reservation. Their trip will provide the opportunity to do

outreach projects in the communities there, helping out those who need some

assistance, learn about the Yakima Indian culture and faith, share their faith in the Lord

with others around them, and work with youth from other cities. We are heading out

July 17-22nd so please keep us in your prayers as we travel.

The Zambia Mission Trip Team says Thank You for your generous item dona-

tions for and shopping at the Garage Sale on May 21, and June 10-11.

$2,671.94 was raised.

The Calvary’s Mission Team traveling to Healing Place School in Lusaka, Zambia will include three members from outside our church, two teenagers, and eight adults. For some, this is their first mission experience, while others have worked building and teaching in Africa previously. We are carrying supplies for the Days for Girls hygiene project, as well as many sports uniforms donated by local schools. Our plan is to build two classrooms and provide classes in continuing education with the staff and students. Suzanne Popp will be interviewing elders and working on a history of the area. The student body at Healing Place School has expanded to include over 400 students and is accredited by the government, which has asked that two classrooms be built. Students have a 100% pass record on standard exams, and the Pastors Mpanga who founded the school are expanding into an agricultural component in the area of Katete to aid in nutrition for the students. Calvary Church has been an active partner on this team, supporting the fundraising events, praying for the unity and discernment of the team, and going on mission trips since the Healing Place project was first funded in 2005 and a deep water well installed. Health and education have been the primary focus of the projects, with an emphasis on helping all children obtain a more abundant life. Enumclaw Rotary has been instrumental in making this possible. We look forward to greeting old friends on your behalf, and bringing back a message of hope and encouragement on the work you have made possible. In His service,

The 2016 Team—Lauren, Jeff, and Kate Hardman, Dave Dietz, Ronda Henry, Jennifer and Emily Blakemore, Lynne Snyder, Stephanie Monroe, Ken and Suzanne Popp.

It’s summer, and that means it’s time for Vacation Bible School. It can also be a time of discovery for adults. Make this the summer that you grow closer to God. One way to do this is to read, study, and experience God’s messages. There are five lessons highlighted in the VBS this year, and I recommend that you parallel your Bible study accordingly.

Lesson 1. The Garden of Eden. Read Genesis Chapters 2 and 3 and 13, and Ezekiel 28:12-19. Lesson 2. Jesus’ Temptation. Read Matthew 4:1-11. Lesson 3. Jesus’ Crucifixion. Matthew 27:32-56, Mark 15-21-38, Luke 38:26-49, John 19:16-37 Lesson 4. Saul’s Trip to Damascus. Read Acts 7:57-60, Acts 9:3-5, and Acts Chapter 22. Lesson 5. Raising of Lazarus. Read John, Chapter 11. Also, I’d like to recommend a fiction book, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy: A Novel by Rachel Joyce (new to the Calvary Library). Queenie—a woman dying of cancer in a Hospice staffed by Catholic Nuns—shares the memories of her voyage through life by writing a letter to an old friend. She explores issues of trust and truth, relationships, and coming to terms with the sins she’s committed. While her life story is not as significant as Saul’s, Lazarus’, or Jesus’, you may see some parallels to your own life and consequently, her story may be a catalyst to cleansing of your soul this summer and preparing you for your final landing in heaven. Other new titles in the Calvary Library: Touched by Kindness, True Stories of People Blessed by Compassion by Kim Boyce Don’t Grow Weary: Seven Master Keys That Will Release You Into God’s Design by Larry Linkous Tough Faith: Trusting God in Troubled Times by Janet Parshall Intimacy with God: Pursuing a Deeper Experience of God Through the Psalms by C. Heald Whatever you choose to read this summer, I hope it is something that brings you closer to God. Serving God and Calvary as the Church Librarian, Marilyn White

Hello, Calvary Church! It has been such a joy to finally be here and to be working with such a warm and welcoming community. I am looking forward to meeting each one of you and am eager to see what God will do this summer.

Since arriving, I have been fascinated with the demographics of this church and the amazing outreach Calvary is doing through its youth ministry—what a wonderful church family and wealth of spiritual knowledge these kids have access to! From my own faith story, I know first hand the impact and influence that a church community, and the older generations in general, can have on young people that walk through the church’s doors. When I was a sophomore in high school, I decided to return to church without my parents and without their approval. If it hadn’t been for the older members of the church who came beside me, who gave me support, encouragement, and the love of their families, I don’t know if I would be where I am today—studying theology and pursuing a career in ministry. The elders that God has placed in my life have been foundational in my relationship with Christ, and continue to play a vital role: many are praying right now for my time here at Calvary.

My encouragement and prayer for Calvary is that its members will continue to stretch out its arms to the kids that come to the youth group and surround them with the church family they desperately need. I also pray that God will continue to soften hearts and diminish barriers between the congregation and the youth, allowing fruitful, influential relationships to form. As I stated before, I am amazed at what God is doing through Calvary. May it continue to be a light and blessing to the surrounding community!

Thank you again for welcoming me here this summer!

Blessings, Emily Larsen

Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon the Lord

shall renew their strength; they shall mount up

with wings as eagles...

Reflections Upon Our Journey of Discovery

When we first started on our series of meetings and workshops related to The Season of Discovery, I had some misgivings and also found it a bit overwhelming. Now that we are approaching the time to live out our gift of worshipping God and serving others, I have come away with a new appreciation for the time and effort that the session and the Calvary members who attended have put into this process.

First of all I would like to take this time to thank the session for their perseverance and their deep commitment to do the best job possible for Calvary. I have watched each of you pray, search your thoughts and respectfully listen to each other in order to complete your process.

There is a deep desire on your part to make this the most honest appraisal of our next steps, taking into consideration the needs and expressed opinions of those who have participated.

Personally, I have finally become hopeful that Calvary can move forward with confidence, knowing that God has been with us all the way. While not every person will be totally satisfied with the results, (that is human nature, is it not?) the image that comes to me is the scales of justice. I see an image of balance; we will be emerging with a balance in our results.

For those of you who have been at Calvary for some time, I am sure you would agree that we did have a difficult time of it in the last few years. I see our journey of discovery as having “put to bed” the past. I do not mean it is forgotten, but it can be put to rest. For me that is a relief. It feels good to look forward to moving on.

To me it seems we should give ourselves a pat on the back and say in some fashion,

“Well done, good and faithful servants.”
