17. SS-PANZERGRENADIERDIVISION(GTZ VON BERLICHINGEN)

Te 17. SS-Panzergrenadierdivisionwas ordered to be formednear Poitiers, France in October 1943. Many of the recruits

were Volksdeutch (ethnic Germans) from Romania. Teprocess began on 15 November 1943. Te division wasgranted the title Gtz von Berlichingenafter the 15thcenturyGerman knight and mercenary Gottfried von Berlichingen (c.1480 1562) from Hornberg in Wrttemberg. Berlichingen

was made famous by writer and poet Johann Wolfgang vonGoethe (1749-1832) who wrote a play based on his life. Tedivisional symbol was an iron fist in a shield, taken fromBerlichingens iron prosthetic forearm, which he wore afterlosing his original during a siege.

Te formation of the division was overseen byObersturmbannfhrer Otto Binge, though final commandfell to SS-BrigadefhrerWerner Ostendorff in January 1944.Te division was placed under the LXXX Armee Korps.

As training continued into 1944, the division still lackedsufficient vehicles. In February, the division was ordered tocollect as many civilian vehicles as they could to maintain

the motorisation of key units. By March, they had motor-ised several units, but not all the panzergrenadierbattalionshad motor transport and the 3rdbattalions of each regiment

were bicycle mounted. Te Panzerabteilung was equippedwith StuG IV assault guns rather than more usual PanzerIV tanks.

After the D-Day landings on 6 June, the 17. SS-Panzergrenadierdivision was ordered from their garrisonin Touars, France to Normandy with orders to face theinvasion. Te first unit of the division to enter combat wasthe Aufklrungsabteilung who engaged US paratroopers ofthe 101stAirborne Division near Carentan on 11 June. By 13

June, the US forces had secured the town and were pushingsouth.

A Kampfgruppe consisting of the divisions 37. SS-Panzergrenadierregiment, 17. SS-Panzerabteilung and Vonder Heydtes 6. Fallschirmjgerregiment counterattackedthe advancing US paratroopers. A furious battle ensuedand several US parachute companies were routed beforethe timely arrival of Combat Command A of the US 2nd

Armored Division, which halted the German thrust. During

these operations SS-BrigadefhrerOstendorff was woundedand on 16 June SS-OberfhrerEduard Diesenhoffer was ap-pointed the new division commander.

For the next month the 17. SS-Panzergrenadierdivisionwasinvolved in fighting in the bocage country around St. L andCoutances, with the division suffering heavy loses.

At the start of Operation Cobra, the division stood in theline of the American advance. Tey fought to hold off theUS offensive, but they were partially surrounded in theCoutances Pocket. Tey broke out without considerable lossof equipment or men.

During August, some elements of the division werewithdrawn for refitting, while the remainder of the17. SS-Panzergrenadierdivision was attached to the 2. SS-Panzerdivision Das Reichfor the counterattack on Mortain(Operation Luttich). After this counteroffensive was repulsedby superior Allied airpower, the division was then split intofour kampfgruppenunder commanders Braune, Gunter, Fickand Wahl. All four kampfgruppen escaped entrapment inthe Falaise Pocket. Despite this, they remained in constantcontact with pursuing US forces until the end of August.Te remains of the kampfgruppenwere finally withdrawn toMetz in September to join the rebuilding division.

A Panzergrenadierregiment has considerable combat power,so it is important to know where the enemy is if its force isgoing to be used properly. Te scout platoon has the job offinding the enemy for the rest of the regiment.

Your scout platoon is very small. Do not waste it charginginto enemy machine-gun fire. Youll never achieve anythingthat way. Instead, use their mobility and stealth to work their

way forward, preventing enemy troops from ambushing youradvance platoons. Either that or have them work their waythrough the enemy lines, trying to avoid fighting, until theycan cause havoc amongst the enemys unprotected artillery.


SS-Scout Platoons use the Motorcycle Reconnaissance rules onpages 196 and 197 of the rulebook and are ReconnaissancePlatoons while mounted.

SS-Scout Platoons Motorcycle MG teams are modelled withSchwimmwagen jeeps instead of motorcycles, they are based

the same way as the Motorcycle MG teams and use the samerules.

In addition they are Amphibious (see page 61 of therulebook).

As the strong arm of the SS-Aufklrungsabteilung theSS-Aufklrungsschwadronoften clear the way for the armouredcars of the SS-Panzersphkompanie. Tey also find themselvesfighting in the bocagealongside the Panzergrenadiers in theinfantry role.

Te SS-Aufklrungsabteilungof the 17. SS-Panzergrenadier-divisionwas the first unit of the division into combat. Teirspeed allowed them to be deployed first in Normandy andthey went straight into the thick of things against the tough

American paratroopers.

With fewer armoured cars available than normal the infantryof the SS-Aufklrungsschwadronwere forced to take on moreof the roles normally taken by the SS-PanzersphPatrols.

MOTIVATIONANDSKILLTe 17. SS-Panzergrenadierdivisionis an enthusiastic young division. Teir reconnaissancetroops have had expert training and are led by many experiencedWaffen-SSofficers trans-

with Americas best, the paratroopers. Although they wereconscripted from far away lands, these Germans still wishto do their part for the Fatherland and do not falter whenfacing the enemy in combat. Regardless of casualties, they

will fight on until they gain victory or fall trying!

fails its Motivation est to Counterattack during an assault,it has the option to either Break Off as normal or continuethe assault.

If the platoon elects to continue the assault, they fight onas if they had passed the Motivation est. However, if they
