PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Family of St. Jude,

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and will mark thestart of a 40 day period of preparation and reflectioncalled Lent. During Lent we are asked to devote our-selves to seeking the Lord in prayer, reading Scripture,to celebrate the sacraments, and service to others.

Here at St. Jude we have many opportunities to in-crease our spiritual growth during our Lenten Season.(See Page 3 in the Bulletin). Every Friday evening wewill conduct the Stations of the Cross (The SpiritualJourney through the Passion of Christ). Every Mondayevening we will have the Sacrament of Reconciliation(Confession). During Lent we classify it as: WelcomeHome to Healing. We will also have our Lenten Pen-ance Service on Monday, March19th, 2018. On Satur-day, March 10th, 2018 we will have A Special LentenProgram entitled: A Day of Reflection with Rev. JudeSalas. This seminar will be an Inspirational Message ofLent. Our Mass with Anointing of the Sick will take placeon Saturday, March 3rd, 2018.

As you see, you will have many opportunities to preparefor Easter during this Lenten Season. Come and joinus. I will be happy to make this preparation with all ofyou.

The following is a message from Pope Francis for the2018 Lenten Season:

“Lent summons us,and enables us,

to come back to the Lordwholeheartedly

and in every aspect of our life.”

God Bless You,Fr. Antonio

MASS OF ANOINTINGSACRAMENT OF THE SICK

Saturday March 3, 2018 - 1:00 PM

Ash Wednesday

Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned

OPPORTUNITIES FOR INCREASED SPIRITUAL GROWTH DURING OUR LENTEN SEASON

ASH WEDNESDAY & GOOD FRIDAY - OBLIGATORY FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of obligatory fast and abstinence. Abstinence from meat is to be ob-

served by all who are 14 years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is to be observed on

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may

take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s

needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Praying the Stations of the Cross is part of the Catholic tradition of devotional prayer. To pray the “Way of the

Cross” requires only that you meditate on the Passion of the Lord before each Station. Stations of the Cross

begin Friday, February 16th at 7:00PM in the church and thereafter every Friday evening throughout Lent.

WELCOME HOME TO HEALING

“Welcome Home” is a diocesan initiative to invite all Catholics to experience the grace of the Sacrament of Rec-

onciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord.

Confessions will be held every Monday during Lent, February 19th through March 26th from 7:00PM-8:30PM

in every Catholic Church in the Diocese of Paterson.

SILENCE THROUGHOUT LENT

Just a reminder that beginning with Ash Wednesday liturgies February 14th all liturgies through Lent will

conclude in silence instead of a closing song. This provides a new way to experience prayer in our lives, and re-

spect for those around us who may wish to remain after liturgy in silent prayer. Therefore, we strive to remain

silent until we exit our worship space.

OPERATION RICE BOWL

As part of our community's observance of Lent, we ask all families to participate in Catholic Relief Services' Op-

eration Rice Bowl, a program of prayer, fasting, learning, and giving. Please be sure to take home a Rice Bowl

packet and follow this simple yet powerful Lenten practice. Packets are available in the church vestibule. Visit

www.crsricebowl.org for more information.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday has a non-Christian origin and was accepted into the beliefs of the Catholic Church

at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The council also settled upon the 40-day fast period as the

standard length to celebrate Lent. Forty is a very significant number used frequently throughout

the bible. The creation of lent by Constantine was originally political in nature and the goal was

that during this time period pagans and Christians would come together into a peaceable unit within

the Roman kingdom.

Lent did not always began on a Wednesday. Even after the Council of Nicaea the beginning start

date of Lent was still questioned. In 601 Pope Gregory moved the beginning of Lent from the

fourth Sunday of the year to Ash Wednesday, 46 days before Easter. This allowed for 40 days of

fasting with six Sundays counted as feast days, for a total of 46 days for Lent (Sundays do not

count). Pope Gregory also instituted the tradition of marking parishioners forehead’s with ashes in

the shape of a cross.

Ash Wednesday is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, however, from Biblical times, sprinkling

oneself with ashes has been a mark of sorrow for sin. Several times the Bible mentions people re-

penting in dust and ashes; for example: Mordecai (Esther 4:1), Job (Job 42:6), the inhabitants of

Nineveh (Jonah 3:5-6), and Daniel (Daniel 9:3-4). Repentance in dust and ashes often was accompa-

nied with fasting during Bible times.

Jesus himself spoke of fasting and its reference can be found in Matthew 6:16-18, “When you fast,

do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to

others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast,

anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to

your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

Jesus is calling His followers to avoid making a show in our worship or when fasting, but rather to

help those in need. He is calling each of us to think externally in avenues of service, thinking of the

least of our neighbors, instead of only thinking internally about ourselves. The point of that matter

is this; Jesus is interested in the condition of our heart and not our external appearances or show.

As we think about our life, repentance, and fasting, the most important question to ask ourselves is

where is our heart? Am I focused on the heart of God in my neighbor, or am I self-focused?

Although Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, most of us will attend Mass on this day in

order to mark the beginning of the Lenten season. It is against liturgical norms to distribute ashes

in isolation. It is to always be done with the celebration of at least the Liturgy of the Word. The

date of Ash Wednesday is now obviously determined by the date of Easter. Easter is celebrated

on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox.
