We were delighted to welcome new members to our Board of Directors - Karen Bensch of Stockton in 2016 and Mary-Elizabeth Eberhardt of Stockton in 2017.

As I head into retirement, I’m aware that fund raising and philanthropy have made for an interesting and challenging career, to say the least. Over the years, many have asked me, “How can you ask people for money? I just can’t do that.” Well, early on I fortunately learned a valuable lesson – it wasn’t about me. Working as a team with board members, volunteers and staff, we asked caring, giving people to help others – and they responded. There are too many to acknowledge here, but my sincere appreciation goes to several who step up time and time again for a multitude of causes – the Spanos Family, Pat and Cheryl Patmon, David and Kandy Vaccarezza, Dianne and Gene Gini, Lynne Davis, Ted and Stefanie Leland, Duane Isetti and Bob and Janet Kavanaugh. Please continue to support our Board led by the also soon to be retired Ted Leland, new CEO and President, Moses Zapien, and talented staff including Melissa Flores and Lizette Smith. I am indebted to each of them – and all the current and past Board and Committee members – for their years of support, encouragement and teamwork.

It seems fi tting that my fi nal farewell will come at the Community Foundation of San Joaquin. I couldn’t be more grateful to have had the opportunity to help lead this organization or more proud of our accomplishments. CFOSJ is here to stay and, through philanthropy, Build, Benefi t, and Believe for years to come.
