! Bothered by Ants?

When we have a few days of milder weather, ants can appear. They are generally harmless but annoying. Tip: The long term remedy and the cheapest is to spread Borax along the baseboards and using a clean paint brush, brush it under the baseboard out of sight. This may have to be repeated in 2 -3 weeks if they still persist. Borax can be bought at Home Hardware. A short term solution is using an ant spray, but it can leave a strong odour. ! Maintenance and Repairs:

Ian S.D. is our Coordinator for Maintenance and Grounds Keeping.

For Emergency repairs, please contact Ian at 519-441-2433.

after, with due dates of Feb 24th and May 26th. ! Snow Removal:

Although we haven't had a lot of snow, there have been a number of occasions when the road, drives and walks required snow removal last month. Wayne (not the Wayne who works for Buren) who actually does the removal for the walks and drives has been doing a great job. He also applies the Ice Melt as required. Thanks go to Len & Barb who have been kind enough to let us use their garage to store the snow blower. This is working out very well.

! Sand Buckets: Just a reminder that you should have a bucket of sand in your garage to use on your walkway/driveway should the need arise. We try hard to keep all these areas clear, but there may be times when the need will arise to use this sand. If you don’t have a sand bucket or need more sand, please contact the office.

! Archives: We are pleased to advise that Joy Yates has agreed to take on the Archives project that we were hoping to fill. Joy will be accepting information

Thanks to Joy for taking on this Project as it is vital to retain the History of the Mews. ! Social Media:

The Board has approved developing a program to become involved in Social Media. Although we will continue to use Print Media to advertise the Mews, this form of advertising is continuing to shrink, and we will do less as Social Media increases. We will also be looking at refreshing our website.

We would like to extend best wishes to everyone for a Healthy and Happy New Year from all of our Mews residents. At the start of this new year, we are happy to report that our new neighbours have all taken possession of their homes in Block 2. These four homes are the last homes in our Phase 1. We still have openings in our Phase 2 and construction is scheduled for 2017. We also have one resale home. It is a Columbine and is 1,355 square feet in size. This unit can be viewed every weekend during our open houses or by appointment during off-hours at (519) 565-4542. Our Sales Office will be open every weekend from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Saturday and Sunday as well as holidays. A group of our home owners have graciously offered their homes for viewing during the weekend which offers the visitor a unique opportunity to see a home fully decorated. If you are unable to visit during these hours, our after-hours contact number is (519) 565-4542 or owners in units 15, 17, 18, or 37 will be happy to answer any questions you might have. This seems to be the appropriate time to sincerely thank those residents who have so generously given their time during 2016 to work in the Model Home/Open Houses and to greet our many visitors who come to see The Bayfield Mews. Many of our residents also give their time to help with several ongoing projects taking place at The Mews throughout the year. Without their assistance, we would not have achieved the success we have had in 2016!

It is January in Bayfield and our seasonal residents have gone. Despite this, our little village is a vibrant community at this time of year. It offers a different kind of life during the winter months with a wide selection of programmes and activities, from exercise classes to skating to book clubs to cards and social activities at the Town Hall or through the Churches in Bayfield. We, who are residents of Bayfield, are very fortunate to have all these activities to choose from. Community living at its best! Around the Area:

Probus Club: The next meeting of the Goderich Probus Club is scheduled for February 7th and the topic will be Personal Security & and Safety for Seniors. Meetings are at 10 a.m. at the Legion. For further info, contact Nancy or John at 565-4460.

Cold and Flu Season: (Excerpts from Healthline.com) Your nose is stuffy, your throat is scratchy, and your head is pounding. Is it a cold or the seasonal flu? Symptoms can overlap, so unless your doctor runs tests, it’s hard to know for sure. Here are some basic guidelines on how to tell the difference between cold and flu

Page 11: 17-01 A-Mewsing News - bayfieldmews.ca News… · Mews Soup Contest, which will be held prior to the Bayfield event, to contact Gene (565-2228). Our soup tasting event at the Mews

symptoms, and what to do if you have either one of these infections.

" What Is the Common Cold? The common cold is called “common” for a reason. It is a leading cause of doctor’s office visits and missed work or school days each year. While a cold generally resolves quickly, symptoms can last for up to two weeks. However, unlike the flu, symptoms are generally mild and in most cases do not lead to any serious health complications.

According to the Mayo Clinic, more than 100 different viruses can cause the common cold. However, the “rhinovirus” is most often the one that makes people sneeze and sniffle, and it’s highly contagious. Most cold-causing viruses thrive in environments with low humidity, which may be why colds are more common during the fall and winter months. However, you can catch a cold any time of year. When someone who’s sick sneezes or coughs, they send virus-filled droplets flying through the air. You can get sick if you touch a surface (such as a countertop or doorknob) that has recently been handled by a cold-infected person, and then touch your nose, mouth, or eyes.

Cold Symptoms: If you have a cold, you’ll probably experience symptoms such as:

• runny or stuffy nose • sore throat • sneezing • mild-to-moderate fever • cough • headache or body aches • mild tiredness

How to Treat a Cold: Colds are contagious during the first two to three days, so stay home and rest up. Because this is a viral infection, antibiotics are not effective in treating a cold. However, there are many over-the-counter medications as well as natural cold remedies that can relieve congestion, aches, and other cold symptoms. (Speak with your pharmacist) Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Colds usually clear up within a few days. See a doctor if your cold hasn’t improved in about a week, or if you develop significant or persistent fevers and or a nagging cough as this may suggest a condition requiring antibiotics.

How to Prevent a Cold: There’s an old saying that laments, “We can put a man on the moon, but we still can’t cure the common cold.” While it’s true that doctors haven’t yet identified a vaccine, there are ways to prevent this mild but annoying affliction.

Avoidance - Because colds spread so easily, the best prevention is avoidance. Stay away from anyone who is sick, and don’t share utensils or any other personal items. Sharing goes both ways — when you’re sick with a cold, stay home

Good Hygiene - Wash your hands often with hot water and soap or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Keep your hands away from your nose, eyes, and mouth when they’re not freshly washed. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and always wash your hands afterward.

" What Is the Seasonal Flu? Influenza — or the flu, as it’s better known — is another upper respiratory illness. Unlike the common cold, the flu can develop into a more serious condition such as pneumonia. This is especially true for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with health conditions such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes.

Unlike the cold, which can hit at any time of year, the flu is generally seasonal. Flu season usually runs from fall to spring, peaking during the winter months. During flu season, you can catch the flu in the same way you’d pick up a cold ... by coming into contact with droplets spread by an infected person. The seasonal flu is caused by the influenza A, B, and C viruses. Active strains of influenza virus vary from year to year. That’s why a new flu vaccine is formulated and released each year.

Flu Symptoms: Flu symptoms can be similar to those of a cold, although they tend to be more severe. Symptoms can include:

• dry, hacking cough • moderate-to-high fever • sore throat • shaking chills • severe muscle or body aches • headache • stuffy and runny nose • profound fatigue (may last up to two weeks)

Page 13: 17-01 A-Mewsing News - bayfieldmews.ca News… · Mews Soup Contest, which will be held prior to the Bayfield event, to contact Gene (565-2228). Our soup tasting event at the Mews

13

How to Treat the Flu: In most cases, fluids and rest are the best way to treat the flu. Over-the-counter decongestants and pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen may control your symptoms and help you feel better. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Your doctor may prescribe antiviral drugs to treat the flu which can shorten its duration and prevent complications such as pneumonia, but you need to take them within the first 48 hours of getting sick in order to have a positive impact.

When to Call a Doctor: Call your doctor when you first have symptoms if you’re at risk for complications from the flu, such as:

• people over the age of 50 • pregnant women • children under the age of 2 • those with weakened immune systems due to HIV/AIDS, steroid treatment, or chemotherapy • people with chronic lung or heart conditions • people with metabolic disorders such as diabetes, anemia, or kidney disease • people living in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes Contact your doctor right away if your symptoms do not improve, or if they become severe. See a doctor if you have signs of pneumonia, including: • trouble breathing • severe sore throat • cough that produces green mucus • high, persistent fever • chest discomfort

How to Prevent the Flu: The best way to prevent the flu is by getting the flu shot. Most doctors recommend getting the flu vaccine in October, or at the very start of flu season. However, you can still get the vaccine in late fall or winter.

To avoid picking up the influenza virus, wash your hands often and thoroughly with warm soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth, and try to stay away from anyone who has the flu or flu-like symptoms. It’s important to adopt healthy habits to keep cold and flu germs at bay. You should always make sure you get plenty of sleep, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise, and manage your stress during cold and flu season and beyond. Let’s have a healthy 2017.

Year of the Rooster – 2017: According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. People born in 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, and 2005 are said to be loyal, trustworthy, sociable, accomplished and usually very well-dressed. Shrewd and daring, they are outspoken and even boastful by nature. Most annoyingly - Roosters always think they are right ... and very often they are! Sharp and analytical, Roosters are generally deep thinkers and it is a rare occasion when something gets by them. Though abundantly practical, Roosters are also big dreamers. They are courageous by nature and know how to get what they want. If thwarted in attaining a big ambition they can become moody and downcast. However, they usually recover from a loss quickly. Roosters are rarely still for any length of time and must always be busy doing something. Shy and conservative at heart, Roosters can be overly concerned with their appearance and often buy the most stylish of clothes. They love to entertain, and parties hosted by them are sure to be the most memorable and extravagant of any. Roosters are noted for doing anything in their power to keep friends and loved ones happy, and are disappointed if they fail. For their sincere and straightforward care and concern, Roosters are usually much loved by all who know them. Lucky Numbers: 5, 7, 8 Lucky Colors: gold, brown, yellow
