ROAD TO THE FINAL The UEFA European Under-17 Championship consisted of three distinct stages: the qualifying round, the elite round and the final tournament. The format changed for 2014/15 with the expansion of the final tournament from eight to 16 teams. Qualifying round The qualifying round, played in autumn, was made up of 13 groups of four countries playing in one-venue mini-tournaments. The top two from each pool progressed alongside the five third-placed sides with the best record against the leading pair in their groups. Elite round In the elite round, held in early spring, those 31 qualifiers plus the top seed – given a bye this far – competed in eight mini-tournament groups of four. The group winners and seven runners-up with the best record against the teams first and third in their section advanced to the finals to join the hosts. Final tournament In the final tournament the contenders were divided into four groups of four, with the front two from each proceeded to the knockout phase. Further details, including the criteria for separating sides that finish level on points in a group, or after 80 minutes in a match, can be found in the official competition regulations. Official persons Referee: Jens Maae (DEN) Assistant referee: Mika Lamppu (FIN), Aleksei Vorontsov (RUS) Fourth official: Anastasios Papapetrou (GRE) UEFA Referee observer: Marc Batta (FRA) UEFA Delegate: Micallef Ludovico (MLT) Danish official Jens Maae has been chosen to referee the 2017 UEFA European Under-17 Championship final on Friday between Spain and England. UEFA TROPHY PRESENTATIONS TO BE MADE ON THE PITCH
The UEFA Champions League, UEFA Women's Champions League and UEFA Europa League trophies will be presented to the winning captains on the pitch this year, following a decision by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin. The trophies will be presented on the field to the winning captains by the UEFA President after the UEFA Europa League final at Stockholm's Friends Arena on 24 May, the UEFA Women's Champions League final at the Cardiff City Stadium on 1 June and the UEFA Champions League decider at the National Stadium of Wales on 3 June. Purpose-built stages have been produced for these venues, and assembling them will take less than five minutes. The return to on-pitch presentations will give all fans in the stadiums a better view of the trophy lifts, while the television audience will also get clearer pictures. Moving the presentation onto the field of play also has a symbolic meaning according to UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin. "The pitch is the players' stage and it is only fitting that their achievements are celebrated there," said Mr Čeferin. "It also makes sense that the officials should come down from the stands to the players – to their arena – and pay tribute to them in presenting the trophy and medals on the playing surface. "Players will also be able to celebrate with their team-mates on the pitch in full view of the fans without the interruption of having to climb up to the stands. Furthermore, all supporters will get a perfect view of the trophy lift wherever they are seated in the stadium." Trophy presentations on the pitch will now be standard practice across all UEFA club and national-team competitions, including UEFA EURO U-17 final in Croatia (Varaždin, May 19th 2017). Mr Čeferin explains the decision, UEFA.com VIDEO: http://uefa.to/2qrO6Dq

TOURNAMENT HISTORY The UEFA European Under-16 Championship, the first edition of which ran from 1980 until 1982, was the place where stars such as Thierry Henry and Luís Figo took their first step towards the limelight. And since the switch to U17 classification in 2001/02 the likes of England's Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere, Spain's Cesc Fàbregas and Gerard Piqué, Germany's Mario Götze and Toni Kroos, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Belgium's Eden Hazard have followed in their footsteps. Denmark staged the first, 16-team, U17 finals in 2002 and Switzerland captured the hearts of football lovers with a series of stunning performances that were enough to win the title and prove that they could well be a country to watch in the future. However their immediate U17 successors failed to qualify for the 2003 finals – showing how high standards across the continent have risen and how competitive youth football has become. Hosts Portugal won that edition, followed by another home team, France, in 2004, with Turkey victorious in Italy a year later and Russia then taking the title in Luxembourg. Spain were champions in Belgium in 2007 and Turkey the following year, and were the dominant force in the old U16 championship; indeed all but the first two of those were under Juan Santisteban, appointed in 1988. He retired after the 2008 triumph and the following year hosts Germany secured the crown. England broke their duck in 2010 in Liechtenstein, winning all 11 games in their campaign including qualifying. The Netherlands, losers to Germany in the 2009 final, gained revenge in 2011 with a thrilling 5-2 win in Serbia and beat the same side on penalties in Slovenia 12 months later to emulate Spain in retaining the title. They did not make the 2013 finals in Slovakia, allowing Russia to take the title, just as in 2006 on penalties, this time against Italy rather than the Czech Republic. Malta hosted the 2014 event, England winning their second title, before the 2015 finals in Bulgaria expanded to a 16-team event once again, France emerging victorious. The Iberian sides have dominated the U16 and U17 tournaments over the years, with eight Spanish triumphs (six at U16 level) and six by the Portuguese (four at U16), including the most recent 2016 finals in Azerbaijan. Germany have three wins to their name – two in the U16s including one as West Germany – while Switzerland, Republic of Ireland, Turkey, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Italy and the Soviet Union were all U16 champions once.
