The fashion world braved Manhattan’s 14–degree temperatures and gusty winds on January24th to attend Fashion Group International’s sold-out 16th annual Rising Star Awards luncheon, hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue andInStyle magazine. Held at Cipriani 42nd Street, attendees were greeted with Bellinis and horsd’oeurvres to keep their energy up while they mingled and networked. Hot snaps and photogra-phers’ flashes heightened the energy and buzz ofthe room. An elaborate lunch followed, duringwhich keynote speaker, designer and 30-yearfashion industry veteran Ralph Rucci did a greatjob rallying the nominees to stay true to their artand follow their dreams. Rucci encouraged thenominees, saying, “You can’t look left or right.Just look forward, and keep your head down whileworking.” Then an all-star panel of presenters—Mickey Boardman, Laura Slatkin, Michael Boodro,Linda Wells, Marion Fasel, Terron Schaefer, ChrisMitchell, Karen Harvey and Derek Lam—announcedthe winners of the 2013 Rising Star awards.

Women’s Appare l :Highly talented competition in the Women’sApparel category led to high drama, ending in atie presented by Derek Lam to Tia Cibani andNorman Ambrose. Finalist Gavadkar VengsarkarBudha also made a strong showing in this category.

Cibani, who spearheaded Ports 1961, won for hereponymous line of women’s apparel. Cibani’s collection is romantic and exotic, conjuring upimages of a daring and chic world traveler, such as Beryl Markham in the Twenties. Flowing silhouettes with smart details of folding, suspension and print are all trademark Cibani features.

Ambrose’s designs, sold at Saks, are ultraluxuri-ous with modernizing details like zippers andsheer skirts (not sheer enough for Kristen Stewart, though). The designer strives for Hollywood glamour with huge fur sleeves (wonder whatCornelia Guest was thinking) and razor cuts.

Men’s Appare l :Belgium produces great fashion designers, andTim Coppens is among them. Trained at RalphLauren before starting his own label, Coppensemphasizes sharp cuts and, recently, shorts. Hefinds inspiration in sports and youth culture, mixing traditional fabrics with innovative materials. Coppens also received Ecco Domani’s2012 Best Menswear Designer Award.

F ine Jewel ry : French born, New York–based Alexandra Mor tookhome the fine jewelry award. Her jewelry is gorgeously simple but also has amazing settingsthat would eclipse the gems themselves, exceptfor the stones’ exquisite purity and symmetricalqualities. Mor’s mantra: “I think of my pieces as heirlooms in the making.” She refers to her designs as “the cashmere hoodie of fine jewelry.”

Accessor ies : Cornelia Guest proved she wasn’t just a socialite bywinning the Rising Star Accessory Award for her cruelty-free handbag and accessory line.Ethical animal practices is the direction a largepercentage of the industry is going: Beauty without guilt. Gaga may like meat dresses, butyounger, “enlightened” consumers want nothing ofit. This conforms to the sentiments expressed at FGI’s “Sustainability That Doesn’t Crunch” conference, where panelist and designer JohnPatrick summed up, “Consumers buy because it’sbeautiful. It’s up to the manufacturers/designersto do the correct thing.” Guest’s faux leather, orvegan leather, products do that with the posh styleand quality elements Guest grew up with as the standard. Another benefit of the direction Guesthas set with her accessory line is the cost, maintenance and flexibility of design the materialoffers. Guest’s PVC bags average around $200and are sold in Bloomingdale’s. As Guestexplained, “I don’t think animals need to sufferfor us.”

Beauty /F ragrance Corpora te : Estée Lauder’s Alana Hawawini accepted the awardfor beauty/fragrance corporate. With 25 brandssold in 150 countries, the Lauder Cos rose from44th to 23rd on Forbes’ 2012 World’s MostInfluential Companies list.

Beauty /F ragrance Ent repreneur :Handsome and dashing, Mexico City–born CarlosHuber won the beauty and fragrance entrepreneuraward. Huber, founder of Arquiste Parfumeur, uses his products to create scent-scapes of historical references that transport one to anotherplace and time. There is a cinematic essence toHuber’s fragrance philosophy, a sensual deja-vu.Tone and emotion are called forth by the olfactorydevices of rare and authentic ingredients such aschili, cinnamon and cistus resin.

A note of Russian leather, used in Arquiste’s Aleksandr, evokes different scenes and moods from the noteof Spanish leather used in their Infanta en Flor.

Success Inside Out “A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.” — Author Unknown . . . . . . . .

Recently, a former client contacted me becauseshe had made a New Year’s resolution to loseweight and was wondering what was a the bestway to make sure that she accomplished her goalof dropping twenty pounds by the time summerrolled around. She shared with me that in the past she would start off strong and then something would always get in the way of her following through. Ever notice how crowded ahealth club is in January and then by the timeFebruary rolls around only the regulars are stillthere working out?

This happens because there isn’t a structure inplace and no matter what you want to have, do orbe, the only way to get what you want is to usethis tried and true idea: Plan your work and workyour plan. But first make sure you are very clearand specific about what you want to achieve, andask yourself if it passes the “hell yes” test. If so,read on.

The S.M.A.R.T intentions system is simple andcustomizable. When I first trained to become acoach back in 1999, it helped me to plan mywork and take specific actions.

S.M.A.R.T Intentions: Steps to Success

Specific. What do want to achieve? To just say, “Iwant to lose weight” is not specific and it is more awish than a statement of intentions. Rather say, “Iintend to release 10 pounds by May 1. I intend towear size X pants by Labor Day.”

Measurability. How will you know you are makingprogress? Keep a journal, find an app such asLOSE it or create a chart to measure your dailyand weekly success.

Achievable. What are the steps you have to take toreach your goals? By breaking a task down intosmall steps it becomes much easier to see theend point. For example, if it’s clutter you want toclear, once you have gotten specific about it,break it down into a series of smaller tasks so that you are not overwhelmed and you experiencesuccess every time you complete one of your tasks.

2013: How is it Going So Far?Happy (not so) New Year!

The hats and horns have been put away, your partydress and stilettos tucked back inside the closet, the Champagne bottles have been recycled, the New Year is no longer new.

What about your list of resolutions? You know, theones you made before the clock struck midnight, where are they now? Why is it that when Marchrolls around we often have already lost track ofwhat it was we resolved to do in the coming year?In part it is because a resolution by itself is just afirm determination to do or not do something.

What is often missing is some kind of action planor steps to turn our resolutions into a goal, and asupport system to make sure we keep going.

And worse, what if what we are resolving to do isnot something we really want to do but rathersomething we think we “should” do. “Shoulds”get us nowhere; in fact, they keep us stuck. This isoften where resolutions fail, because they tend tobe amorphous or have some form of personaladmonishment for things we say we will do butdon’t ever seem to get to, for example, “I resolveto lose weight, I resolve to clean up my clutter, Iresolve to be nicer to people.” Each is a noble resolution, but it will never get done that way

Probably the best way I ever heard this expressedwas by best-selling author and motivational speak-er Alan Cohen in talking about what we think weshould be doing versus what really lights us up. Hesaid, “If it’s not a ‘hell yes,’ then it is a ‘hell no.’”

Start from here, start with something new. I callthem SMART Intentions. What this means is thatyou state a goal with a commitment, a timeframeand an intention to act.

It is not just renaming the same old thing; instead,it’s transforming the old tired idea that we musthave New Year’s resolutions and then beating ourselves up for not completing them.

5

Reasonable. Is this something I can do now? Ifyour childhood dream was to skate in theOlympics but you never took a skating lesson untilage 40, then this is not reasonable and you will befrustrated. If you want to be the same size 4 youwere at age 17 and you are currently 50 years oldthere is a good chance that you are sabotagingyour success before you even get started.

The message here is: Don’t give up on dreams, just choose big, audacious and achievable dreamsfor who you are now.

Time-Oriented. What are your goal posts? How longdo you give yourself to accomplish each step? Thisis crucial if you are ever to complete what youintend.

The final step is to create daily actions that willkeep pulling you forward. Keep a “what’s important about today” list and take actions onthose items that keep you on your path to completing your S.M.A.R.T intention.

One helpful tip is to work with a buddy or a friendwho has a project that he or she has wanted tocomplete. Work together using the S.M.A.R.Tsystem and check in with each other daily orweekly. Shoot your buddy an “I did it” or “how areyou doing with your project?” text or make a quickphone call that might just be enough to keep youin action.

Most important is celebrating every success.Reward yourself with some quiet time, a bubblebath, a manicure or foot massage. One client Iworked with for several years kept a daily successbook. Each day before she went to sleep shewould write in her journal what she was proud ofhaving accomplished that day.

made by Maria Ficalora. A longtime Fashion Groupmember, Ficalora, founder and designer of her eponymous company, is a knitwear specialist whoseclothes are sought after for understated elegance andthat certain unspoken sense of luxury a woman findsin clothes made for her and her alone. Made to aclient’s exact specifications are meticulously proportioned skirts, jackets to wear with the ease of a cardi, impossibly flattering dresses and wardrobe-anchoring suits with 24/7 wearability, wrinkle-lesspackability, and the wiliest way of making the wearerlook and feel her personal and highly accomplished best.

Headed, or so she thought, for a career in fine arts—ceramics and painting—Ficalora enrolled in theRhode Island School of Design where, as fate wouldhave it, her artistic sensibilities were drawn to the infinite possibilities of yarn; the textures and the colors now woven, with a painterly hand, into thepieces collected and worn by women whose measureand discernment are reflected in the way she presentsherself; who never has to ask herself, “How do Ilook?” “I create individual looks, lots of detail and finishings; antique buttons, trims on pocket flaps, neat tucks, slim vents…features you do not usuallyfind in a sweater off the rack,” she explained to a NewYork Times style writer. And that she does. With theeye and the skill of the true artist.

And speaking of things artistic, it happens thatFicalora was born and raised in what one might thinkof as a talent agency unto itself. In the fold are photographers, her father and an uncle whose workhangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Among theseveral musicians is another uncle who played withthe iconic “King of Swing,” Benny Goodman. Addingluster to the family tree, are Ficalora’s siblings: one asinger and one an awarding-winning jeweler,Patricia Ficalora. Must be in the DNA.

Oh, but there’s more. Costumer to the starriest of the stars, Ficalora’s career as the creator of knitted costumes started in 1982 when she needled the outfits for…are you ready?…Kermit and his Muppet-y palsErnie, Bert and Gonzo. Since then, she has completed more than 200 projects for stage, screen,TV, ballet and opera. Dozens of Broadway creditsinclude The Lion King, Billy Elliot, Spider-man, JerseyBoys, Mary Poppins, How to Succeed in Business and, right now, the SRO revival of Annie, pictured at rightin her knitted-to-be raggedy little sweater. Silverscreen gems include The Prince of Tides, AustinPowers II, Cast Away, 101 Dalmatians, The Grifters,The Birdcage, Julie and Julia – and the list goes on.

Anything else? Well, if you’re current on things new, noteworthy and talked-about, you’ve most likely readabout Michael Mayer’s stunning new production ofRigoletto at the Metropolitan Opera. Set in Las Vegaswith a thug sensibility, the lead, in this story oftragedy, betrayal and moral compass gone berserk, issung by Želijko Luĉić who wears, as pictured below, the scarlet and taxi-cab yellow argyle sweater knittedand personally fitted by Maria Ficalora. Check theMet schedule for performances of Rigoletto and seeand hear it for yourself.

And if you happen to be out and about, you mightcatch a glimpse of Kate Winslet, Jane Fonda, TomHanks and Billy Crystal, among other paparazzi magnets, spending their me-time in their MariaFicaloras… masterly pieces of highly intricate stitchery perfected over a lifetime passion for knitting.

Oh, and just one more thing: here’s what Maria Ficalora had to say about Fashion GroupInternational. “I think, as a designer, that the greatest value to me is that FGI keeps me on top oftrends and fashion via the seasonal ready-to-wearpresentations. I know that, these days, you can seeall the shows online, but I like the commentary andthe distillation of trends. I also like the live paneldiscussions; quite different from reading an editedpiece, and I always bring friends to the shows. FGI isalso a great networking source,” she continued. “I’ve met so many people from every segment of thefashion world which, to me, is another importantadvantage…Fashion Group offers an ‘old fashioned’point of real, person-to-person contact, and I can’ttell you how many people I’ve introduced to the organization.”
