Bollywood is the name given to the Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India.

The name of Bollywood it derives from combination

of two words, Bombay (former name of Mumbai) and Hollywood (center of American film industry).

The naming scheme for "Bollywood" was inspired by "Tollywood", the name that was used to refer to the cinema of West Bengal(industry based in Tollygunge, Kolkata).

In 1931 Alam Ara, the first Indian talkie, was made, Subsequently, music and fantasy came to be seen as vital elements of filmic experience.

Sometimes the use of music was overdone. For example Indrasabha in 1932contained 70 songs. Since this era, music became the defining element of Indian cinema.

By 1940s cinematography played an important role in Indian movies. There remained a great deal of western influence on Indian popular cinema along with the song, dance, andfantasy staples.

By the 1950s Indian popular cinema had established itself as a form of art, entertainment and industry. Film historians call this period the golden age of Indian cinema.

The international popularity for many of these movies and film actors like Raj Kapoor made the Indian government recognize the revenue-earning capacity of the film industry.

The subsequent government intervention resulted in censorships and heavy taxation, which made life difficult for filmmakers.

In 1960, the Film Finance Corporation, which later formed the National Film Development Corporation, for financing and exportingfilms, was established.

The masala film – the quintessential Bollywood entertainer – burst onto the scene only in the 1970s.

The 1980s saw the rise of several woman directors such as Aparna Sen, Prema Karnath and Meera Nair.

The 1990s ushered in a mixed genre of romantic films, thrillers, action movies and comedy films.

Gradually, the face of Indian cinema was changing once again. Technology now gave us Dolby digital sound effects, advanced special effects, choreography and international appeal. This brought investments from the corporate sector along with finer scripts and performances.

Page 10: 1691389 634967018573835000

Indian cinema finally found global mass appeal at the turn of the 21st century. As the world became a global village, the industry reached out further to international audiences.

Investments made by major global studios such as 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, and Warner Bros was confirmation that Bollywood had etched itself on the global psyche.

Prominent Indian corporate firms such as Zee, UTV and Adlabs also jumped onto the Bollywood bandwagon, to both produce and distribute films.

Such was the excitement in the industry that by 2003, as many as 30 film production companies had been listed on the National Stock Exchange.

Cinema in India remains the single largest entertainer to date.

Conclusion

Bollywood still has its controversies, but not with its funding. It seems that more than a few Bollywood films are very closely based on U.S. films to the point that many U.S. screenwriters have accused filmmakers of copying. Seeing as how cash strapped the industry was in the past, maybe they just didn't have the budget to hire writers. Regardless, the industry continues to grow at an extremely fast pace.

As the Indian film industry continues to churn out increasingly higher quality, bigger budget films, Bollywood continues to gain exposure worldwide. With the help of well known directors like M. Night Shyamylan bringing even more publicity to Bollywood, its impact in the entertainment industry will only continue to be felt.
