PRELUDE “Honor and Glory, Power and Salvation” Broughton

* CALL TO WORSHIP Come, let us sing to our Creator; make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. We come into God’s presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise with songs of praise! Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before our Maker! This is our God, and we are God’s people. We are like sheep, with God as our shepherd. O the depth of the wisdom and knowledge of God! Who can begin to know the mind of God? How unsearchable are God’s judgements; how inscrutable are God’s ways!

* HYMN “Lift Every Voice and Sing” UMH 519

* PASSING THE PEACE The Peace of Christ be with you / And also with you.

OPENING PRAYER O God, all things come from you, and you are in all things. Yet you are not confined to what we can see or imagine. You are beyond our highest and deepest thoughts of you. The tallest mountains and deepest seas are as nothing before you. The vast reaches of time and space are your design. Sovereign Ruler, how dare we harden our hearts against you? Speak to us here to remind us of your glory and of our need for you. Amen.

Making Sense of the Bible New Life in Christ Class Sept 10—Oct 15, 6 sessions Rev. Dave Highfield and Woodie Wood Rev. Adam Hamilton writes “I love the Bible…and I wrestle with it. There are portions, if I’m honest, that I have questions about. I’m guessing…you have questions too.” This class will use Hamilton’s book as a spring-board to honestly wrestle with the difficult questions raised by thoughtful Christians and non-Christians. Examples: Were Adam and Eve real people? Why is God so violent in the Old Testament? Why would Paul command women to “keep silent in the church?” Is Jesus the only way to salvation? How does God view homosexual people?

WELCOME Seminarian Vivian (Dongeun) Lee Vivian Lee enters her second year at Wesley Theological Seminary, this fall. Vivian lives in New Windsor with her husband, The Rev. Dr. Steven Cho (pastor of Stone Chapel and Zion UMC’s) and their 13 year old son, Won. Vivian will be interning here at Westminster UMC while school is in session, eight to nine hours each week, for the next two years. We are very excited about this new opportunity to work with Vivian as together we, “We change lives through Jesus Christ to make a difference.”

Pastor: The Practice of Ministry and Mission program establishes a partnership between Wesley Theological Seminary, a seminarian student and a local congregation. Today, we welcome Vivian (Dongeun) Lee, who is responding to God’s call to become an Elder in the United Methodist Church.

Learning Partner: We celebrate Vivian’s arrival among us! Together with the pastors, we will covenant with Vivian as her learning partner, agreeing to meet with her monthly as we support her learning and ministry here at Westminster UMC.

Pastor: Together, all of us … pastors, learning partners, and congregation, covenant with Vivian in this mutual teaching and learning relationship, pledging our mutual commitments to the building up of the church and community around us.

Congregation: We welcome you as a student in ministry among us. We promise to labor with you as brothers and sisters in faith. We support you in partnership with Wesley Theological Seminary as a sign of our mutual ministry on behalf of the church.

Vivian: I accept your gift as leaders and teachers of ministry. I promise to labor with you as your sister in faith. I pledge to you my prayers, encouragement, and support. May the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen us that in this partnership and in all things we may do God’s will in service of Jesus Christ.

Congregation: Almighty God, by virtue of our baptism we are all called to a life of service in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Look with favor upon Vivian, a student and leader of your own calling to follow Christ and serve in his name. Give her courage, patience, and vision; and strengthen all of us in our Christian vocation of witness to the world and of service to others; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

By your Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit you gave to your apostles many excellent gifts and you have placed us in a community to learn and share these gifts. Provide for us your guidance, that we may be teachers and learners together. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
