Letter from the President

"Do your little bit of good where you are; It's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world."

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

As we approach Thanksgiving and I reflect over the last year as chairman of the Board of Trustees, there is indeed much to be grateful for. I thank our departing faithful friends for the significant contributions of their ‘time, talent and treasure’ over the years as they transition on to new chapters. I welcome new staff and board members that bring energy, enthusiasm and dedication to our mission. As a national model for ending homelessness, Hesed House has attracted gifted and committed staff. The Board of Trustees is deeply appreciative of their skills and devotion. We recognize that none of the miracles that regularly occur at Hesed House could happen without the support of our many volunteers and donors. I praise and thank God for bringing such generous people together.

“None of us can think we are exempt from concerns for the poor and for social justice."–Pope Francis

The State of Illinois is in deep crisis. Our elected leaders have been called upon to make decisions that will potentially have a devastating impact on the community that Hesed House serves by cutting vital services while simultaneously increasing the need for those services. We cannot look away and assume someone else will step in to protect our most vulnerable. Hesed House has a proven track record of success, I believe that we have a responsibility as a community to support their ability to provide the tools necessary to help individuals and families break free of the shackles binding them to homelessness.

“You will find, as you look back upon your life, that the moments that stand out are the moments when you have done things for others."– Henry Drummond

That has been very true for me. My life has been deeply enriched through my association with this great organization. As I complete my tenure on the Board, I am so grateful for the opportunity to have been so closely associated with an organization that daily embodies the spirit of Hesed. It is here that I have witnessed the best of humanity. My sincerest thanks for all the kindness that has been shown to me over these many years. Let me end with Micah 6:8, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Thank You PADS Churches, Schools and OrganizationsHesed House is an extension of the churches...a sanctuary...to do God’s Will...Without the multitude of churches, schools, organizations and businesses that donate, prepare and serve food in PADS, there would be no Hesed House. We, the staff, are here to help them, and you, to carry out God’s Will – to minister to our struggling brothers and sisters in their time of need.

To all of you, “Thank You for Living Hesed!”
