Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) begins their work this Thursday, August 2 when they’ll receive helpful guidance from Lou Williams, a ruling elder of University Presbyterian Church and a member of the Commission on Ministry of Mission Presbytery. Lou will represent the Commission on Ministry (COM). Lou served on and moder-ated a Pastor Nominating Committee and is trained to equip PNCs on how to successfully complete their task. She is patient, wise, gracious, diplomatic, skilled, and has a deep faith. I will meet with them, too, highlighting some important parts of their handbook from the Presbyterian Church (USA) (PCUSA), “Calling a Pastor.” Here's some information that I shared with the PNC: 1. There are far more pastors looking for a position than there are open positions. The PNC may receive two hun-dred or more Personal Information Forms (PIF) which is a narrative resume of prospective pastors. The infor-mation the prospective pastors share are answers to questions that the PCUSA has on its standardized form. Of course, it will take considerable time for our PNC to read through, pray over, and discuss all the PIFs before they decide to decline or engage in a conversation with a candidate, and possibly interview. 2. The PNC will receive PIFs through the electronic matching system of the Church Leadership Connection (CLC) which is an entity of the PCUSA. They will also receive them through self-referrals or referrals made by persons such as yourself, the General Presbyter of Mission Presbytery, other ministers and friends. 3. At one of its early meetings in the process, the PNC will elect either a moderator or co-moderators. You’ll be informed when that is done. 4. Our church will be a sought out because it has good vital signs, there are opportunities for growth in member-ship, ministries, and mission, and while there aren’t other pastors on staff, it has helpful, competent staffing in ad-ministration, office management, custodial care, and the day school. Additionally, we have almost 300 members on the roll, and currently average more than 100 in worship, and the buildings and space are beautiful and well main-tained. Plus, there’s no mortgage! Pastoral candidates will appreciate the church being in a dynamic, growing in-ternationally known city with excellent transportation systems, career opportunities for other family members, a good school district, affordable housing, and lots of recreational opportunities including spectator sports. Having the presbytery’s office in the same city is very attractive. Finally, a compensation package beyond the presbytery’s required minimum may very well be offered which is beneficial. 5. Before receiving PIFs, the PNC shall complete a Ministry Information Form (MIF) which is a narrative of the church’s vision and mission, history, hope and prospective plans for its future as it seeks a pastor with gifts and skills fitting for the church. Upon completion and after being approved by the session and the Commission on Min-istry, it’ll be electronically uploaded to the CLC’s website. Completing the MIF could take a month or longer. 6. Pray for God to reveal the candidate whom God is preparing and wants called to Holy Trinity. It’s God who pre-pares and God who calls. We can’t change that. And if you know God like I do, you know that God takes God’s good time in doing what God wants done. Darn it! Don’t we all like quick answers and fast results? So besides praying for the prospective candidate, pray for yourself and our church that anxiety will be let go, and confidence in God will spread like a fire that purifies silver, shining it as bright as a star in the night sky. Anxiety hurts the pro-cess. Expressed anxiety is contagious like a virus. It has the possibility of making the whole body, the “body of Christ” sick. It’s medicinal for the church for persons to stop saying, “Why does it take so long?” Also, to demean the process and our church at larger is inappropriate. The process is designed to acknowledge that God’s in charge! 7. The PNC will make regular, periodic reports to the congregation. I’ll keep that task before them. Please pray for the PNC. Their names are listed below and if you have questions about any of this, please speak to me. I’m counting on you to be faithful because God is always faithful to us!
With high expectations of God’s good things to come,
Pastor Vanessa The Pastor Nominating Committee Members with voice and vote: Karen Armstrong, John Durham, Nancy Ericksen, Diane McReynolds, Debbie New-lin. Alternate Members with voice only: Martha Waters and Wayne Smith.

Joseph (Joe) Scutti joins the staff of Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church as Director of Music as of August 1st.
A graduate of Westminster Choir College in 1988, he has a Masters in Music Education from the University of
Delaware where he graduated with honors in 1996. A native of New Jersey, Joe has been living in Texas for
the past 18 years. He currently provides Music instruction at Stahl and Hardy Oaks Elementary Schools.
Joe has a diverse background as a Music Educator, teaching at all levels from elementary through high
school. His experience even included time as the Cadet Choirmaster, Adjunct Professor, and Organist at Val-
ley Forge Military Academy and College in Pennsylvania. More recently he formed and directed the Commu-
nity Choir in North East San Antonio which was invited to sing the National Anthem for the Spurs for the past
four years. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society was selected to receive the
Sallie Mae award for outstanding first year teachers.
He started his music education at an early age on the piano, but quickly moved to the organ which is his
instrument of choice. Through most of his adult life he has combined a career in Music Education with active
participation in providing Music in Worship. He has been Accompanist and/or Choral Director at each new
location, serving with many different denominations over the years. He says it really began one Easter Vigil
when the organist at his home church where his father served as Head of Parish Council became ill and could
not come to the service. His father simply pointed to the organ and said, “Get up there and play.” He did (he
was 10) – and he has never stopped playing. The music he provides in his work with congregations is at the
same time a personal act of devotion. We are privileged to welcome someone with the training, education,
and faith to help lead us in worship through music each Sunday.
In the spirit of community, responsibility, and commitment, we will be having one combined worship service at 10:05 am starting September 2, 2018. Sunday school will be offered from 8:55am - 9:55am. We thank God for allowing us to hear his voice through his Spirit and his people. Your HTPC Session and Worship Committee.

Paper goods and beverages will be provided. The September 6, 2018 meeting of the Book Divas will discuss the book, Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron. Summertime is a great time to read. For information about the Book Divas, contact Sheila Clark.
The Holly Days Arts & Crafts Fair is just around the corner – October 6, 2018. Every year the Wom-en of the church have a booth at the fair stocked with handmade items. Handmade items are need-ed for this year’s fair. We are accepting donations of handmade items for the Women’s booth. Bring your items to church between now and September 30 for the Women’s booth. You may give your craft items to Sheila Clark or Niesha Marshall. If you would like to help with the Holly Days Arts & Crafts Fair, contact Sheila Clark or Niesha Mar-shall. Committee chairmen are still needed.
At the Stated Meeting on July 24, the Session…
• began with a devotional on Galatians 5:16 - 26 and prayer, focusing on the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
• shared stories of forgiveness, compassion, and spirit-fullness; then prayed for blessings of fruit of the spir-it on those who struggle with tenacity to overcome challenges.
• acknowledge census of 296 active members.
• planned to develop vision and mission statements from the Mission Study Report that will be used by the Pastor Nominating Committee.
• planned for a leader and date for the Session’s “more effective leading” workshop.
• voted to hire Joseph M Scutti as our new Music Director beginning August 1.
• approved the MOE proposal to request the congregation to donate school supplies to RACAP during the month of August.
• heard a report on the congregational input regarding worship time and voted to consolidate Sunday morn-ing services into one service at 10:05 am beginning September 2 (Sunday School times TBA later).
• heard that the Ministry Planning Calendar developed at the July 8 Special meeting is now part of the multi-year church calendar accessible on the church website.
• approved a request from Diakonia Emmaus for HTPC to host the Emmaus gathering on January 19.
• reflected on fruits of the Spirit witnessed at the meeting.
We will have ONE worship service each Sun-
day for summer time. We will start our worship
service at 10:00 am. We will keep this sched-
ule through August 26, 2018.
Join us for our next meeting on August
23, 2018 at the Golden Corral on Pat

So goes that “perfect country western song”! But it’s not a great way for a
church to operate if it wants to be warm and welcoming! We need to call
each other by name, new members would like to know our names, Pastor
Vanessa would really like to know everyone’s name, we’ll soon have a new
Music Director who would like to know folks than regular choir members,
and we’re on our way to finding a new pastor who will certainly want to
get to know all of us.
“But I introduce myself!” Well, yes, we all do. But there are 100 or so of
us in worship every Sunday, it’s not always the same group each week, and expecting anyone to remember
those random introductions isn’t really realistic. So what to do? We have two projects to help us all get to
know each other.
First, get your photo taken or approve re-using the most recent one
we have in a new photo directory.
Second, find and wear your name tag – or order one!
These are small things for each of us to do, but they represent kind-
ness toward Pastor Vanessa, newer members and our coming Music
Director and Pastor.
The August Stated Session Meeting has been rescheduled to August
