Year 5 - Home learning Term 6 – Beginning 1.6.2020
Dear parents/carers,
We hope that you have all had a lovely half term break and that you have enjoyed the lovely
weather that we have had.
As we have previously suggested, try to keep your child’s day as structured as possible whilst they
are not at school. Below is a suggested timetable to support you with this structure and also to
support you in helping your child with their home learning.
Please do send any work that you complete at home to [email protected] so
that work can be celebrated, feedback and support given where you need it. Please enter BLAKE into
the subject of the email with your child’s name so that we can sort and feedback as quickly as
possible.
As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch with any questions or concerns.

Break 3: (2-2.15pm)
This term in topic we are learning Geography, and in particular rivers and global warming.
Today we are going to start this topic learning bit more about rivers and seas of the United Kingdom.
Rivers usually begin in hills and mountains, often rising out of the ground in a spring. Rivers grow
larger as they flow downhill and are joined by tributaries. Further downstream there may be lakes,
waterfalls and gorges. Eventually the rivers flow into and estuary join the sea. They will usually have
towns on the way. What rivers do you already know?
Glossary
Tributary – A stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river.
Gorge – A narrow valley between hills and mountains, usually with steep rocky walls and a stream
running through it.
Here are some pictures that show a river starting in hills or mountains.
If you look at the picture on the left and in particular some of the features of a river. The head of a
river is the source or where it starts. A tributary is a stream or river that flows into the main river.
A meander is a curve in the river.
A delta is a wide muddy or sandy area where the river meets the sea.
Do you recognise this part of a river from a TV programme?
This is the River Thames and is features on the opening of East Enders. The River Thames is the
longest and most famous river in England.
Do you know where the River Thames starts from?
Do you know where the River Thames flows to?
Today we are going to find out a bit more about some United Kingdom (UK) rivers. We would like
you to research some UK rivers and to complete the table below.
Name of the River
The hills/mountains or the name of the place where it starts
Where does the river flow to?
Major towns that it passes through?
River Thames
River Severn
River Trent
Can you find out another UK river? You could choose a local river.
If you wish to and have time to, you can find out about other rivers in the United Kingdom.
How did you get on with this activity?

Monet was inspired by rivers and he painted many pictures of the River Thames. Let’s have a close
look at the way he has painted the water.
Can you have a try at creating your own water effect in the style of Claude Monet? Below are some
photos that may help you. You could use coloured pencils or an ordinary pencil making different
marks on the paper and maybe shading. The first picture is especially well suited to using an ordinary
pencil.

following the story structure of The Game. When you have finished your story remember to check it
for punctuation and spelling. You could use a dictionary to help you with this. We look forward to
reading your story.
You will remember that earlier in the week we saw how you could create your own book. If you
wanted to, you could write up your finished story into this book
Activity 5 and Activity 6: PHSE. Today in PHSE we are looking at how you can start to develop a
positive mindset. A mindset is the way we see or view situations. For example, we have all been in
lockdown now for many weeks, we could have looked at this time with a positive mindset or a
negative mindset. If we have a positive mindset we would think about all the things that we could do
at this time eg. Start a new hobby learning how to draw. If we have a negative mindset we will think
only about the things that we can’t do at this time.
