Hemingway – editing modeThe panel on the right is like having a sub-editor on your shoulder. Clicking on writing button clears the right hand side and allows me to focus on getting ideas down.

I use the native OSX app, but it can be used online as well.

Pinboard – home screenPinboard is a social bookmarking site. It is a repository of links that I have found together with notes and ‘tags’ that categorise each entry.

It allows me to quickly surface relevant research or sources. Whether it’s a presentation or a social posting I have a database with thousands of quality web pages behind me.

Pinboard – bookmark screenThe key to using Pinboard is developing a ‘pack rat’ habit.

The bookmark screen is triggered by clicking on a bookmarklet in the chrome of my browser. There are four fields:• URL – which is pre-

completed• Title – I usually edit

this to put down the article title and site name

• Description – why I thought it was significant to bookmark

• Tags – labels that help me find the article in the future

Terminal.appTerminal is a powerful and scary tool. Powerful in terms of speed and versatility. Scary in terms of if you get it wrong.

Here are a couple of simple examples to try

Terminal.app – check the weather forecast

This uses the finger protocol that was originally designed to see if someone was logged on a computer. It is used in this case to trigger a 24-hour metrogram for a major city

Terminal.app – ping a websiteThe ping command can be used in a couple of circumstances. Firstly checking if your ’net connection works by pinging a stalwart of the web like Yahoo! or the BBC. It can also be used as an initial diagnostic for a website

It will continue pinging the website until you press ‘ctrl’+ ‘c’ keys

IFTTT – content automationIFTTT uses simple ‘cause and effect’ recipes to send content around the web.

I use it to feed a number of social feeds.
