KENNETT SQUARE, PA - Kentucky Derby winnerBarbaro is doing well after a planned procedureyesterday. ABarbaro was placed under anesthesiayesterday to have his left hind foot cast replaced,@said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. AWe also removed the cast on his right hind leg andreplaced it with a custom-fabricated plastic and steelorthotic brace to give his foot additional support.@ An abscess near the lateral heel of his right hind footwas drained, and the brace that was applied will allowmore regular treatment of that foot. ABarbaro hadanother smooth pool-recovery and has beencomfortable with an excellent attitude and appetitesince then,@ said Dr. Richardson. AWe will probablyreplace his left hind foot cast under anesthesia againat least two or three times at roughly two-weekintervals if his comfort is maintained. We were verypleased with the progress of his left hind foot sincethe last cast was applied.@ In addition, new shoeswere placed on both front feet for additional support.Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of Penn=sGeorge D. ARC CONCLUDES IN DUBAI The 31st Asian RacingConference concluded yesterday in Dubai. Held at theMadinat Jumeirah Resort, the week-long event was thefirst ARC to be held in the Middle East. The theme ofthe conference was >Racing Without Borders.= Amongthe highlights yesterday:

    >Star Wars= effect of Genetic Manipulation--The final day of the conference was governedby debate over the controversial growth of ge-netic manipulation, which could send the breed-ing sector into Adisarray.@ Speaking at a DrugControl workshop, John McCaffrey, Director ofVeterinary Services for Racing Victoria, said therapid changes involving genetic development goto the very heart of breeding and could turn theindustry upside down. AWe=re not there yet, butit=s not that far away,@ said McCaffrey. AWe=renot prepared for it. I can see even more chal-lenges on the horizon, and some of it is >StarWars= stuff. The Europeans seem to be movingto a pharmaceutical approach and we=ve beendoing that method since 1964 and it doesn=twork, whereas the Americans have a more clini-cal approach. We have to look to the techno-crats and the administrators to sort it out, itwould be a lost opportunity if that mechanismisn=t started now.@

ARC Coverage cont.Darley, Coolmore & Breeding for Speed--

In the breeding workshop, the competition be-tween Darley Stud organisation and Irish-basedCoolmore has opened up opportunities forsmaller breeders, according to Mick Goss, ownerof Summerhill Stud in KwaZulu Natal, SouthAfrica. The competition gives mare owners moreoptions, including being able to delay paymentsand cut costs. Small studs also can find a nicheif they are agile and supply personalised cus-tomer service that breeders appreciate, Gosssaid. During the same workshop, Oliver Tait, general manager of Darley Australia, challengedconference delegates to consider ways to stema tide of breeding and racing mostly for speed, which he defined as the emphasis on races ofless than a mile in distance and two-year-oldracing. This trend is detrimental to the Thor-oughbred breed if it is detrimental to the sportof racing, he contended, adding that racing de-pends on Abrave, sound horses@ who competeover longer distances and for several seasons toAgive it gravitas as a sport.@ Tait added, AByfocusing on speed, we=re moving away fromhorses that can possibly fulfill that criteria. Weneed more horses that are heroes; we needmore Makybe Divas and more Deep Impacts.@

500-million Reasons to Focus on India-- Charismatic racing owner and airline boss V.JMallya urged the Subcontinent=s industry tocapitalise on the potential goldmine of new busi-ness. With 500 million people in booming Indianow under 20 years old, the Chairman and Man-aging Director of Kingfisher Airlines said, AThereare a lot of youngsters finding well-paid jobs andliving in the fast track.@

    >Impact= is Helping to Make Strides-- Meanwhile, the success of Japanese superstarDeep Impact (Jpn), an unremarkable-lookingracehorse, is down to his incredible stride, ex-tensive scientific data revealed. Dr. Hiroko Aida, from the Japan Racing Association, displayedthe running form of Deep Impact in the veteri-nary science workshop. A host of measure-ments were taken from high-speed video data ofthe Kikuka Syo (Japanese St Leger) at a rate of250 frames per second. Sophisticated analysishas revealed that the champion racehorse=s ratioof overlap time to stride duration was 8.5 per-cent, compared to that of an average horse, which is 17.1 percent. It was postulated thatthis characteristic, which is also common to thegreat Secretariat, may be an essential feature ofsuperior horses. Aida said that such video analy-sis could in the future identify the Anext DeepImpact@ before he hits the sale ring.

New Club CEO elected ARF Chairman--Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Chief ExecutiveOfficer-Designate of The Hong Kong JockeyClub, has been elected the new Chairman of theAsian Racing Federation (ARF), it was an-nounced at the closing ceremony of the 31stAsian Racing Conference. Engelbrecht-Bresgeshas been a prominent figure in the German andHong Kong horse racing industries for more than20 years. "I am honoured to be elected as chair-man and I believe that for Hong Kong to con-tinue to head the ARF after four years of leader-ship already truly reflects our standing in worldracing,@ Engelbrecht-Bresges said. "The ARF hascome a long way as the key driver of major de-velopments in the region's racing industry, and Ihave no doubt that our concerted efforts willfurther enhance our importance in the interna-tional racing arena.@
