Principal’s Reflection
16 October, 2014
Week 2, Term 4
Dear Families,
This coming weekend we have many young people in our community who will be celebrating the Sacra-
ment of First Holy Communion. We particularly pray for the following Holy Spirit students undertaking
this Sacrament - Oliver Bernardino, Nathan Capati, Darragh Cooke, Summer Darcy-Duncan, Sophie
Fowler, Patrick Grace-Long, Matthew Hammer, Cain Kurnoth, Jackson Lay, Jacqueen Nguyen, France
Omana, Isabella Paolucci, Anthony Paolucci, Dakota Paterson, Caleb Paterson, Jamelia Sariago, Xavier
Seabrook, Faith Solo, John Thornley, Daniella Zuccarato and Sandrina Zuccarato.
Also in answer to the call from the Holy Father, Pope Francis, we pray for all those meeting in Rome for the Synod on the Family. May
it be ‘a precious treasure to enrich the Church. May the Church undertake a true journey of discernment and adopt the necessary pas-
toral means to help families face their present challenges with the light and strength that comes from the Gospel’. Jesus, Mary and Jo-
seph, graciously hear our prayer (extract from Pope Francis’ ‘Letter to Families’ 2014).
We congratulate Mrs. Cherry Valenzuela who was awarded the ‘2014 Emerging Professional Educator’ Award at Parliament House
for the Northern Territory Education and Care Awards last Friday. This is an outstanding result as staff through-
out the whole Northern Territory were nominated. Cherry was recognised for her outstanding commitment and
significant potential in the Northern Territory Educational and Care Sector. Well done Cherry, we are all very
proud of you.
This week at school we celebrated the fantastic work done by our office and maintenance staff. A big thank you to
the great work done each day by Yola Gray, Lee Chong, Kath Baylis, Alex Dwyer and Yin Jongue. Between
them they have given over 60 years of service to Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School for which we are truly
grateful.
Last night the teaching staff undertook a school retreat with Father Raas, from the Catholic Education Office. Father Raas led staff
through Christian mediation, prayer and spirituality. This allowed staff to reflect on their faith journeys and spirituality. It was a special
occasion for all involved.
Students are eagerly preparing for our Holy Spirit Mission Market Day, to be held on Friday, October 24th from 11am – 12:30pm.
This is a fundraiser as part of World Mission Month and an excellent way for students to reach out to others in need. All money raised
will go directly to Catholic Missions, who work with children in over 160 countries worldwide. Each class is responsible for running
their chosen stall and students can pay a small fee to participate in each of the activities. For a gold coin donation, they may also dress
in casual clothes for the day.
We look forwards to seeing students and parents at our “School Disco and Book Fair” tomorrow night from 6pm. There will be sau-
sages, drinks and glow sticks for sale at the disco. The library will be open for the purchase of books on the night. If you are able to
help in anyway please see a staff member on the night. Don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes.
God bless you all and keep you safe,
Mr. Simon Duffy

Swimming Program - Term 4, 2014 Monday 6th October 2014
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
RE: School Swimming Program Casuarina Pool
Swimming Program begins on Monday 20th October (Week 3) and concludes on Thursday 1st No-
vember (Week 4). There are no lessons on Friday of each week. Please ensure children bring
their bathers, sunscreen, sandals and a towel each day. Please remind students to bring along clean
underwear to change into after their lesson. Students must change after their lessons; they are not
to remain in their bathers for the remainder of the school day. Students are encouraged to dress in
their best sun smart gear while at the pool. The sun is very hot and it doesn’t take much for them to
get badly burnt. Children wear bathers, hat and sandals to the pool and take with them their towel
and sunscreen (please make sure these are labeled) . It’s important that we not allow children to go
to the pool in bare feet. Teachers will walk their classes to and from Casuarina Pool each day.
Cost of Swimming Program is $55 per student. Payment is due to our office prior to commence-
ment of lessons. Please do not hesitate to contact our front office if you wish to discuss a payment
plan for swimming.
Below is a timetable of when classes are having lessons. This timetable has been coordinated with
Royal Life Saving Instructors and cannot be changed. I would encourage students in the first two
session (8:45-9:30 & 9:30-10:15) to come to school dressed in swimming gear (under school uni-
form) to ensure they are ready to begin.
This program not only looks at stroke development, but survival and rescue skills. It’s important
for children to learn these necessary skills or at least to familiarise themselves with what to do in
case of an emergency.
Kind Regards,
Paula Sellars
Deputy Principal/PE Coordinator
