Dear Friends,
Greetings! Some of you might have watched the
Winter Olympics events which were held in Pyeong-
Chang, Korea. There were many sensational games
and winners. One of them is Chloe Kim, 17 years old,
who won gold in the woman’s snowboard. Her per-
formance stood out to electrify all the crowd, many
reporters as well as her family in the USA and espe-
cially her grandmother living in Korea.
We could imagine what it took to become such a
glorious champion. Lots of practice, persistence, commitment
and sacrifices. Her father who has been so dedicated to her said
proudly, “She is a good kid. I tell her to be humble, that this is
from hard work, that you weren’t born this way.” He is right. A
champion is not born, but made out of hard work and commit-
ment. We might wonder how many times she fell and failed in
order to reach almost a perfect score. Probably countless falls
and failures! Countless rise up and keep doing!
We could say that there is no success without falls and fail-
ures. However we try hard to avoid failures and pain. We have
fear to fall and fail. Real failure is not to try, or to give up out of
fear. Failures are part of reaching a success. Real failure is to not
do anything out of fear.
What we need to do is learn how to deal with our fear and how
to deal with our failure when it happens. Our Bible story tells us
of two disciples who made a fatal failure during the passion week.
Judas and Peter! Judas betrayed his teacher Jesus and sold him
for 30 silver coins. Peter denied his beloved teacher three times.
Both of them failed and felt terrible, when they acknowledged
what they did. But we can see real failures in how they dealt with
the guilt, shame, and inner pain. Judas reacted with self-
condemnation and killed himself, while Peter repented bitterly
and accepted God’s forgiveness which led him to give his life
completely for God’s services. His failures formed Peter as a
humble servant.
We need to learn from our failures and to be willing to forgive
ourselves and others, and to rely upon God’s grace. There is no
success without failures!
In Christ, Pastor In-Sook

New Pastor Announcement
The Staff-Parish Relations Commit-
tee is happy to announce that Bishop
Frank Beard has appointed Rev. Jungil
Rhee as pastor to our church effective
July 1st. Pastor Rhee, as he likes to be
called, has in recent years served
churches in Kirkwood, Smithshire and
currently is the Associate Pastor of
Macomb Wesley UMC (since 2011)
and is the Lead Pastor of the Macomb
Korean Fellowship (since 2008).
Pastor Rhee received his Masters of Divinity at Emory Uni-
versity in Atlanta, Georgia in 2008. He also has a Master’s in
Theology in Old Testament Studies which he received from
Hyupsung University in Korea.
Pastor Rhee experienced a small children’s ministry go from 5
children to over 60 in little over a few months in Korea. He
helped with Kid’s Club at rural churches, established a New-
comer’s Reception and hospitality setting at Macomb Wesley,
and was instrumental in transforming the children’s ministry ar-
eas. He cheers for healthy church systems that work and likes to
try new ministries along with an adventure for evangelism and
outreach. This is just a very small look at his ministry.
Pastor Rhee brings with him his wife, Myoung-Ah You
(people call her May), his daughter, Grace, who is 10 years old
and his son, Isaac, who is 6 years old. May plays violin and is
currently enrolled at Western Illinois University Graduate
School of Music. Grace likes violin, piano, swimming, book
club, writing club, hand-chimes, etc. Isaac loves swimming,
violin, soccer, hand-chimes, video games, etc.
At the end of Pastor Rhee’s biographical statement, he says,
“Christian ministry is a shared labor of love. I look forward to
what we can accomplish together in Christ. I ask for your
prayers as this new chapter opens for you and for us.”
Our prayers are with Pastor Rhee and his family, with Pastor
In-Sook and with our Grace Church family as God prepares us
for the next exciting chapter in our lives.

ers, encourage and care for others, and are involved in ministries
with their communities.
The Basic Course is the foundational course for individuals

Let’s Learn about Chinese Language
and Culture!
Yifan Shen will offer an experiential class in Chinese lan-
guage and culture. The topics will cover Chinese cuisine, lan-
guage, customs, arts, music, and scenery. Anybody who attends
more than half of the courses will receive a hand-made Chinese
knot as a gift. A free-will donation would be appreciated for the
class. If you are interested in joining the class, let Pastor In-
Sook know by March 18.
Yifan Shen holds a B.A. in Chinese history from Shandong
University of China and a M. S. in Rehabilitation Counseling
from SIUC. She used to give lectures on Chinese culture to stu-
dents in southern Illinois rural area. In recent years she volun-
teers as a guest artist in international cultural festivals at SIUC
and an Irish Festival in Dublin, Ohio.
Family Fellowship March 11, 3-5 p.m.
Science Center at the University Mall
The Science Center in the University Mall
Carbondale is a great place to play and allow
the kids to interact. They indicated that if we have at least 8 chil-
dren in our group then the rate per child will be only $2.75 and
adults are free! The only small catch is that those who have sea-
son passes already to the Science Center would not be able to use
them for this particular group event. No food needed for this
gathering...just time together!
Send a note to Laura Morthland ([email protected])
and to let her know if you are open to coming on the 11th and
how many kids and adults would likely be coming with you.
If you would like to attend but the cost of the event poses an
issue please contact Laura and arrangements can be made.

What is Lay Servant Ministries?
Lay Servant Ministries has its roots in the
days of Methodist Circuit Riders. During
the beginnings of Methodism in the United
States, an ordained minister traveled be-
tween churches by horseback. On the
weeks when the minister was away, the need existed for a layper-
son to assist with worship, visitation, and meeting the needs of
the local mission “charge” church.
Today, the UMC Lay Servant Ministries certifies laypersons
who have participated in a minimum of 25 hours of training in
leadership, communication, and caring. An additional minimum
of 10 hours is required every three years to maintain certification.
Lay Servants assist with worship, church leadership, and service
within the church and community at large, in the Name of Jesus.
Carbondale Grace has three certified Lay Servants: John
DePuy, Roberta DePuy and Linda Egner. Linda recently com-
pleted 10 hours of advanced coursework on prayer for worship,
community, and personal devotions. Linda has renewed her Lay
Servants Ministries certification for another three years. When
you see her, tell her “thank you” for her leadership, communica-
tion, and caring service to Carbondale Grace and the community!
Thank you, everyone, for your continued support and prayers
for this vital ministry.
