But when a high-quality product and excellent customer service converge, a trip to the store can prove rewarding. That’s why readers chose Harvest Supermarket’s meat department as No. 1 in the 2019 Best of Madison County survey. What sets Harvest meats apart is that they are cut fresh in the store, according to Don Murphy, who helps manage the meat department in Harvest’s Anderson location at Scatterfield Road and Eighth Street. “We try to keep our meat fresh,” he said. “We cut it as we sell it. Nothing is precut.” Harvest offers a variety of beef, pork and chicken. For beef, Harvest uses USDA choice Angus. About 80 percent of the pork comes from Indiana, while the rest arrives from surrounding states. Chicken comes from Greenfield and from southern states. “We try to buy as many local products as we can to keep the money in state,” Murphy explained. Depending on time of year and which cuts of meat are most readily available, Harvest offers weekly in-store specials. “Each week we pick one of the best sellers to put in our ad to generate some traffic and volume,” Murphy said. “We also do bundle packages starting at 25 pounds and going up to 75, so you can buy a large assortment of meat at one price.” Murphy said Harvest sells several thousand pounds of meats every month. He attributes Harvest’s success to its customer service. “We hire people, train them right and try to retain them,” he said. “In fact, most of our stores have full-service meat counters. There’s actually a person waiting on you to help select your cuts of meat.” Harvest’s Anderson location is open for business seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Harvest, which is headquartered in downtown Anderson, also has Madison County area locations in Alexandria, Chesterfield, Elwood, Frankton and Middletown.
