In my experience, there are two kinds of people: the folks who kick off their shoes the second they walk through the door, and the ones who don’t.

People can feel strongly about this on both sides. The main thrust of the Shoes-Off Brigade seems to be this: we track a lot of weird stuff on the soles of our feet. Little reminders of all the places we’ve been — wheth-er it’s a private home or a public bathroom — cling to our shoes long after we leave. This same theory applies to our spiritual lives. As human beings and as disciples, we visit a lot of figurative towns and pick up a lot of figurative dust. Sinfulness. Shame. Defeat. Anger. Fear. Doubt. No matter how hard we try to keep free of it, these things have a way of attaching themselves to us, sometimes without us even noticing. We need to take a good look at what unhelpful and unconstructive baggage from our past we’re tracking into our present and future encounters. What is the “town” God is asking you to visit today in His name? Is it a tough conversation with a friend, a brief witness to a stranger in the checkout line, a call to be present to someone in your family? Before you go, remember, shake off the dust. Don’t let a past disappointment constrain you. Don’t allow yesterday’s failures or burdens to keep you from the joy of today’s witness, whatever form it might take. What We Carry From

Town To Town

Everyday Stewardship

Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments

On July 14th, we celebrate the feast of the

"Lily of the Mohawks." St. Kateri

Tekakwitha is the first Native American

woman to be canonized. Orphaned by a

smallpox outbreak, Kateri survived with

severe scarring and impaired eyesight. De-

spite tragedy, she was a devout girl at a

young age, often building crosses from

sticks in the woods. When she was 18, she

began secret instruction in the Catholic

faith with French missionaries. Her commit-

ment to Christianity and vow of virginity

was misunderstood and ridiculed by her

fellow villagers. She escaped to a nearby

mission, where she attended daily Mass,

taught the children, and cared for the sick

and the elderly. Sometimes the greatest

misunderstandings can come from those

closest to us. Like St. Kateri, God invites us

to be faithful to our commitments of faith

and to always respond in love

God calls us to bring His Word to all corners

of the earth. What does that mean for you

and me? We are just simple and humble folks

trying to find our way through the Gospel and

our world. After all, we are not professional

preachers but gentle servants. Jesus sum-

mons us to take his message on the road and

bring it from the pew to the pavement. We

cannot keep the joy of the Gospel to our-

selves but must bring it into every aspect of

our lives: our families, our schools, our work,

our corporations, our politics, our social cir-

cles, and our philosophies. We cannot just

accept the wisdom of the world as true and

conduct our lives as if the Good News is a

separate matter. They are one. Jesus never

asked his friends to go and construct build-

ings where people could come to hear the

truth. He asked them to go to their homes

and meet them one on one, face to face.

When the rubber meets the road and the

message is challenging, rejection is quite pos-

sible. That’s the litmus test for whether we’re

really doing what we have been asked.

LIVE THE LITURGY

First Reading: The priest Amaziah was threatened by the visions of the Lord received by Amos that warned of Israel’s destruction. Amos’ defense is that he was cho-sen by God to prophesy. When has your faith been a threat to others?

Second Reading: Paul speaks of the abundance of blessings we receive from God as believers in Jesus Christ. Paul asserts these blessings make us “holy and without blem-ish” before God. To whom in your life should you share this message of hope and redemption?

Gospel: During his public ministry, Jesus commissioned the Twelve Apostles to evan-gelize by preaching repentance and healing the sick and demon possessed. What do you see as effective tools for evangelization today?

Catholic Questions

Question:

Why are Catholic and Protestant Bibles different?

Answer:

Since the earliest days of the Church, Christians used a Greek translation of the Old Testament known as the Septuagint. This collection of the texts of the Hebrew Scriptures in-cluded 46 books. At the time of the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s, the Protestant reformers began to create their own translations of the Bible (into local languages) and some began to question why the Jewish Scriptures would have included texts that were written in Greek, because, they assumed, the only valid Jewish Scriptures would have been written in Hebrew. And so, they decided to remove seven books from the Old Testament: Baruch, Sirach, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Tobit, Judith and Wis-dom (as well as portions of the Books of Daniel and Esther). This means that the Protestant Old Testa-ment only includes 39 books, while Catholic Bibles continue to include those original 46 books. Both Catho-lic and Protestant Bibles include 27 books and letters in the New Testa-ment.
