Current Focus: “Respect Self and Others (Be respectful)” Daylesford Primary School Newsletter Vincent Street (P O Box 20) Daylesford, 3460 Ph: (03) 5348 2480 Fax: (03) 5348 3958 Website http://www.daylesps.vic.edu.au “SEMPER MELIORA” (Always better things) Current Focus Respect (self and others) Respect is when we recognise the worth, quality and importance of others. It is also important to have the same recognition of one’s self and have a self-belief. Respecting self is an appreciation of and valuing yourself physically, socially, mentally and emotionally: knowing, understanding and valuing one’s strengths and traits. There are many people who influence our opinions and the choices we make: friends, parents, family members, teachers, sporting coaches and other significant adults in our lives. We have conversations with them about many issues in life, we spend time/or associate with them and they are often people who are our role models. At times we will agree with them or we may even disagree on some things but the way we do so is important in keeping the lines of communication open: respectful of self and others’ opinions. One way to show people that we hear what they are saying is to respond and say things like, “That is an interesting idea … but I believe we could approach it in this way” or “I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree on that point”. Even if we disagree we should make every effort to be a good listener and be prepared to justify our opinions. This is what we do as learners. We make room for new ideas by talking and listening to others with respect. That means no interruptions and using positive body language, nodding and smiling when we agree or looking puzzled/or shaking our head to indicate we disagree. We all want people to respect us and our ideas. We certainly expect people to be respectful of the adults we trust: parents, other family members, teachers, sporting coaches, etc. Respect for self and others can be displayed when we talk, play, work and learn at school, within the community or at home. Respecting others shows everyone that we are friendly, responsible and thoughtful students at Daylesford Primary. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

• Welcome back

• Holiday works

• House XC

• House Athletics

• Kitchen Garden Fund Raiser

• Yard Equipment

• Outstanding school fees

Welcome back everyone to what will be an exciting term 2. This term offers many opportunities across the school, in Arts, Sports, classroom learning and a chance for the children to achieve a number of their personal goals.

A number of works were completed over the break, continuing to maintain our school environment. I am sure you would agree the painting looks great. A BIG thank you to Noel Muscat for his work. Also thank you to Barry Phypers for his work around the yard and on our oval.

Congratulations to Tipperary on winning the House XC on the last day of term 1 at Jubilee Lake. It was great to see so many parents supporting the children and I was particularly impressed by the House spirit shown by all the students. Good luck to all the children (top 6) who qualified for the Goldfield XC , which will be held at Clunes on Wednesday 4

th May. (refer to age group

photos below my report)

We are looking forward to the House Athletics on Monday in Ballarat. Notes came home on Tuesday and should have been returned by Friday.

Thank you to the parents listed in the Kitchen Garden Recipe Book Fund Raising Events this coming weekend. Your support to the KG program is much appreciated.

Extra and new yard equipment has been placed in the classrooms for the children to use during recess and lunchtime. Funds raised from the term one raffle have assisted in funding this equipment.

Finally, a reminder to all parents/carers who have yet to settle their school account to finalise this asap. All families received an invoice outlining their account in term 1. If you need to discuss a payment plan please contact our business manager Deborah Cowen.

Dear Parents/Carers, I am encouraging children to think about Italy and Italian outside of school hours and would like students, if possible, to occasionally bring in Italian “Show and Tell” on the day that they have their Italian class. This can be anything at all that has an Italian connection eg. Pinocchio, a photo of Italy, a postcard, a drawing they have done about Italy, a drawing of the flag, Italian food, some pasta to show, a travel brochure on Italy, a book about Italy, a cookbook with an Italian food recipe in it, something from the newspaper, a picture from a magazine, a CD with an Italian song, a picture or info from the internet, the leaning tower made from lego……….anything at all that’s Italian or about Italy. Thanking you for your support. See below for the timetable.

BOOKCLUB

Book club is an important fundraiser for our

school. Every time a family purchases books through Book Club the school receives books for our

school library. Over the years Book Club has been operating, hundreds of books have been received

and our school library would not be the wonderful resource it is for our children’s learning.

Forms were distributed to students this week. The final date for return is Friday 22nd April, 2016.

Please ensure form has child’s name, and correct

money for items ordered enclosed, if returning to the

school.

Reminder: Parents may also order online via “The Loop”.

Any orders via The Loop will be delivered to school in the usual manner.

PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE 2016

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition, but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 9 September 2016. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll by retur4ning the PRC permission form. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc
