Helping others dealwith breast cancer
TC071010DT01BREAST CANCER sufferer Glenda Rhodes says a support group helped her deal with adifficult time in her life. She believes a coffee group would benefit Te Awamutu women withbreast cancer.
Glenda Rhodes has been through the fullbreast cancer experience, and now wants tohelp other Te Awamutu women get through thesame challenge by setting up a coffee group forthem.
Mrs Rhodes was living in Whangaparaoawhen she was diagnosed with breast cancer lastyear.
After the diagnosis she underwent a partialmastectomy on her right breast, but when thatdidn’t get all the cancer she had to have a fullmastectomy on her right side. She joined aWhangaparaoa support group which she creditswith getting her through a difficult time.
‘‘I made friends with one lady in particularwho I’m still in touch with now. Even thoughyou have your friends and family around youfor support, it’s really good having someone elseto talk to, someone who’s been through whatyou’re going through.’’
After moving to Te Awamutu earlier thisyear and only recently finishing her chemo-therapy and radiation treatment, Mrs Rhodeshas decided to set up her own informal supportgroup to share her experiences and help otherwomen.
‘‘You go through so much and learn so muchand I just want to be able to use what I’velearned to help others.’’
She is now working to set up the coffee groupfor other women in Te Awamutu who have had,or are having treatment, for breast cancer. Thegroup would allow women to get together andtalk about their experiences, offering know-ledge, support and help as needed to otherwomen.
Mrs Rhodes says a breast cancer diagnosiscan change your whole life, and any womanwith breast cancer goes through a lot, bothphysically and mentally.
‘‘As well as making you feel like rubbish, treatment can cause physical effects which canreally make your self-esteem hit rock bottom.
‘‘I’ve had a mastectomy and had tissue takenfrom my tummy for a reconstruction, so mybody looks totally different to how it did, andduring my chemo my hair began to fall out so Ishaved it all off; it was amazing the number ofpeople who stared at me in the streets or at theshops if I wasn’t wearing a wig. I think thatwould be really hard for most women, so havinga place where it’s safe to be honest, talk or cry orwhatever you like might really help.
‘‘Women need to know that I’m here, otherwomen are here, the Cancer Society is here. There are so many people who understand whatthey’re feeling and can help support them.’’
Anyone wanting to contact Mrs Rhodesabout setting up this coffee group should callher on 870 6155. Cancer Society support services
are also available in Te Awamutu, and peopleshould call 07 838 2027 to access or enquire aboutthese.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Check www.takeaction.org.nz to see what New Zealand is doing to raise awareness about breastcancer and to raise funds for Breast Cancer New Zealand’s health and education programmes. Tomorrow is Pink Ribbon Day.

YOUR LETTERS
Multi-cultural societies possibleChris Groenestein’s
comments on Muslims, Sep-tember 28 has compelled me towrite this letter.I enjoyedreading Chris’s letter in thebeginning for it’s charminglybroadminded views aboutimmigrants integrating intomainstream Kiwi culture.
Unfortunately, hiscomments became disgust-ingly narrow-minded andmean about immigrants whoare culturally not similar toNew Zealand. The final attackof course is this person’swarning about Muslims.
I am a naturalised Kiwi andhave been living in this beauti-ful country for over 16 years. My country of origin is Singa-pore, where I was born an
Indian Hindu. This little country is truly
the melting pot of many differ-ent nationalities, races andcultures along with the vari-ous languages and religiousbeliefs that are part of thistype of mix.
Chris categoricallydeclared that ‘a multi-culturalsociety cannot and does notwork. Because when two ormore cultures meet, they clashsooner rather than later’. Thisis absolute nonsense! For over150 years, Singaporeans areliving in peace and harmonyas one united people regard-less of race, language orreligion. It is definitely do-able.
The opinion that Islam is
extremely aggressive is atotally unacceptable state-ment. A few Muslimextremists do not make all theMuslims in the world a terror-ist society. Come on, histori-cally and currently, almostevery religion exceptBuddhism has been aggressiveand corrupt all in the name ofGod.
On Chris’s comment that‘Islam does want to turn NewZealand and every othercountry into the image of theirown’, please tell me how manyMuslims have we metknocking on our doors, banging their holy Korans atour faces, aggressivelydemanding that we convert toIslam at machine-gun point?
As a businessperson, Iregularly travel around theworld. My experiences ofMuslim folks have alwaysonly been good ones whether itwas in Singapore, New Zea-land, Indonesia, Malaysia,Thailand, India or Europe andeven in flight. They will giveyou their last morsel of food inthe name of hospitality, theywill give up their only bed-room to accommodate youwhile they sleep on theirconcrete-floored lounge, theywill heal you with their loveand care. This is what basicIslam is all about. Try openingyour heart to this mostly kindand caring people, you’ll besmitten by their affection.

Dehli Games shamefulwaste of resources
I sincerely hope that at least some ofthe 6000 athletes competing at the DehliGames, who have been fairly wellaccommodated, with soft beds, air con-ditioning, three substantial meals per day,all washed down with iced water orsimilar drinks, will give a thought to thewell over 400 million indigenous people, most of whom are living in sub-standardhousing, having a poor nutritional diet formost of their wretched lives, and many ofthese pitiable souls are not able very often,or not at all, to have access to good cleandrinking water and medical attention.
I do not understand how the IndianGovernment can, and would, even be ableto send millions of Rupees on funding afairly massive sports complex, pay for theexotic costumes, foot the bill for thou-sands of workers, engineers and techni-cians, the Armed Forces of over a million
strong, Police and security forces togetherwith a host of other expenses associatedwith such a titanic undertaking.
Bearing in mind that just a few yearsago the Indian Government had an exter-nal public debt equivalent to 80 billion USdollars, with this mind, the whole event isa shameful, grossly wasteful athletic farce, especially as there will likely bearguments, disagreements betweenteams, disrupting influences and thestrong possibility or terrorism etc, not tomention the almost certainty of manyathletes taking performance enhancingsubstances.
Perhaps some of the Indian readers ofthe Courier could shed some light on howthe Indian Government are able to fundthe extravaganza knowing full well theircoffers are empty.

Te Awamutuit’s time yougot preparedfor disasters
TC071010CA01ABOVE LEFT: Te Awamutu resident RobynDuncan, with her daughter Hayley (right, 12) andfriend Jaedi Shepherd (10), look at some of theessential items they would need in an emergencysituation during their shopping visit to TheWarehouse.
Did pictures of the Canterbury earthquakemake you think about what you would do if adisaster struck Te Awamutu?
Do you have any idea what you would do orwhat you need to survive for several days withoutelectricity or water and no access tosupermarkets?
There’s every chance it’s something you willhave to face as the Waikato has had a busy year onthe natural hazards front.
From tsunami warnings through to droughtand high river levels, the fact that the region facesa range of disaster risks has been very clearlyillustrated.
However, a recent survey for EnvironmentWaikato has shown only 8% of Waikatohouseholds are fully prepared for a disaster.
This means they have an emergency plan forboth at home and away, emergency items andwater, and they update these items regularly.
GET READY WEEKDuring Get Ready Week 2010 (October 10-16)
Waikato Civil Defence Emergency ManagementGroup is calling for regional residents to do moreabout getting better prepared.
“The Waikato region has a lot of potential fornatural hazards including river and stream flood-ing, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic activity, severestorms, and human pandemic,” says Waikato CivilDefence co-ordinating executive group chairmanLangley Cavers.
“If any one of these disasters struck theWaikato, overwhelming demand for emergencyservices means people could go up to three daysbefore receiving essential items such as water, power and telecommunications. So we need to liftlevels of preparedness.
“The fact is disaster can strike at any time andwithout compassion.”
PREPARE YOUR KITMr Cavers says each household should prepare
an emergency survival kit which will last them upto three days if a disaster struck.
This kit should include an adequate supply offood, a means to cook with (such as a gas cooker orbarbecue) and water to get a family through thefirst 72 hours of an emergency, as well as a first aidkit, torches, batteries and a radio.
EMERGENCY OPERATING AREASWithin the Waikato group’s region, there are
three emergency operating areas (EOAs):• Waikato Valley covers north Waikato, Hamilton,Waipa, Otorohanga and Waitomo areas• Southern covers the area from South Waikato toTaupo• Thames Valley covers the Matamata, Piako,Hauraki and Thames-Coromandel districts.
WAIKATO DISASTER SCENARIOWaikato Valley will be running an earthquake
exercise over four days next week. The scenario will be that an earthquake has hit
the Waikato region in the morning and will be feltin Matamata, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Hamilton, and Morrinsville.
This exercise will involve over 100 people andwill activate the Waikato Valley emergency oper-ations centre in Duke St, Hamilton.
Further information about what you need to doto be prepared for an emergency is available on thewebsite: www.waikatoregioncdemg.govt.nz

GRAEME BURTON
A sense of style
A GARDEN design using minimal varieties but still creating lots ofimpact.
A GARDEN with numerous different plant varieties, also veryeffective with the use of foliage colour and form.
Hello once again to all keengardeners,
The weather last weekend was awonderful tonic, making everyonefeel happy in the sunshine and it gotthem out on mass into their gardensagain. My wife and i spent two fulldays in our patch of earth, bringing itall up to scratch again ready forChristmas and the outdoor enter-taining that comes with that time ofthe year.
Its time to trim what needs doing, feed all your gardens with a slowrelease fertiliser, mulch where youwant to keep the weeds to aminimum, and generally get every-thing in shape for the time of year forgrowth and lots of blooming.
DEVELOPING AGARDEN STYLE
If you need some more plants foran existing garden or you have anew garden to create, here are twodifferent styles that you can thinkabout.
Style one — Design yourself agarden with less varieties and userepetition or group planting. This is avery common style used by a lot ofprofessional landscapers, becauseit brings through a stronger defin-ition of foliage form /flower colour.Attached i have a photo of a gardeni developed under a big old camelliatree using a total of 100 plants, andthis number was spread across only4 different varieties of plants.Theimpact of the amber colouredfoliaged heuchera,
the mass flower of the tiarella, the soft green semi weeping fern inthe background and the stripedcarex grass in the foreground, makes this garden a realeyecatcher. Each of these 4 plants isquite different in its look, butextremely effective when all puttogether, The real issue whendesigning this garden yourself is, doyou have the confidence to buy alarge number of one plant. The endresult can be so much more effec-tive, but if you have chosen thewrong plant the end result can bevery disappointing, because youhave a lot of them.
Style two — This garden is acompletely different look to theabove style, with having a biggerrange of varieties and few ofeach. This can also work veryeffectively if done properly.Attachedis a photo of a small tropical lookinggarden which has a good selectionof plants in a tiny area, extremelyeffective with all the variety ofcolours and foliage form.
When wanting to buy plants, tryand seek good advise before pur-chasing , as this will help you toback the winners or betterperforming plants that are availablethese days .It will also save youmoney in the long term because you
wont end pulling out a whole lot ofplants that were bad choices in thefirst place
Ten plants that i have found tobe very reliable in waikato gar-dens;Lomandra Tanika — a top orna-mental grass from australia, outperforms most of our own nativegrassesGardenia Fragrant Star — a musthave plant for in a pot or close to thepatio, beautiful fragrance all sum-mer, cold hardyYucca Banana Split — A gooddwarf yucca with striking gold/greenfoliage, extremely hardy to all theelementsHen and Chicken Fern — Areliable performer for the shadegarden, great planted on mass .Buxus Koreana — A very attractivesmaller growing form of buxus,
great for trimming into topiary, containersHydrangea Quercifolia — Oakleafed hydrangea, white flowershang like grapes and beautifulautumn foliage colourStar Jasmine — A truly fantasticclimber and groundcover, beautifulfragrance all summer, plant close toyour patioCAMELLIA WIRLINGA BRIDE —A great camellia for the modern lowmaintenance garden, small whiteflowers on massMICHELIA FIGO — (Port WineMagnolia)-a reliable performer forany garden and you can clip to anyshape/sizeCERCIS FOREST PANSY — Bur-gundy wine coloured foliage allsummer, a good tree for a smallersection
Happy gardening.

Flying flag forrowing champs
The Te Awamutu CBD will be getting ‘dressedup’ with street flags over the next few weeks.

Cornerstone gallops in with grantBY CATHY ASPLIN
TC071010CA02CORNERSTONE Trust grant recipient Taylor Yarndley (left) her horse Mansfield Park Magnolia(Lily) and Cornerstone trustee Christine Braun.
Taylor Yarndley has to find $16,000before she can even get to the Eques-trian Australia Show Horse and RiderChampionships.
The local rider is part of the NewZealand team set to compete in theevent at Werribee, Victoria fromDecember 1-4, but transporting horsesis an expensive exercise.
Luckily for Taylor (15) she hasreceived some great sponsorship togive her a ‘leg up’.
The latest funding has come fromTe Awamutu’s Cornerstone SportsAchievement Trust which providesfinancial help to our rising sportsstars.
Added to funds received fromsponsors NRM, de Lautours, HamiltonVets, Bracken Farms and the late JimMcNeil, Taylor is edging closer to hergoal.
New Zealand team manager Eliza-beth Charlston says Taylor has everychance of success across the Tasman.
‘‘Only a handful of top riders havewon there before, but Taylor couldwell join those ranks.’’
Taylor broke in her own horse,Mansfield Park Magnolia (Lily), onwhich she won the 13.2 Champion ofthe Year, Supreme Show Pony of theYear and Reserve Champion NewZealand Bred titles. The talented teen-ager also placed sixth in Rider of theYear and fourth in Pace andMannered.
The work she did breaking in herhorse was clearly evident whenanother rider also won First RiddenPony of the Year on it.
FUNDRAISING LUNCHEONCornerstone Trustee Christine
Braun says the grant for Taylor wasapproved earlier in the year andmeans all their funding has beenexhausted.
‘‘That’s the bottom of the barrel —the grant for Taylor was the final onewe could make and tips the totalallocated past $70,00 since the trust
began in 2006.‘‘We are delighted to see our recipi-
ents performing so well on the nationaland international stages and hope tocontinue to help local athletes after ournext fundraiser.’’
The popular Cornerstone luncheonwill be held at Te Awamutu SportsClub on November 19 this year.
Guest speaker Martin Snedden hasbeen confirmed and there will again bean auction of memorabilia.
Martin Sneddon is Chief Executiveof Rugby New Zealand 2011, a jointventure company established by theNew Zealand Government and theNew Zealand Rugby Union to deliverthe 2011 Tournament.
He was previously Chief Executiveof New Zealand Cricket (2001-2007) and,of course, was a Black Cap from1980-1990.
Tickets for the event are $80, tablesof 10 can be booked for $800.
One table can also have the priv-ilege of hosting Mr Sneddon, so if youwould like to secure sponsorship forthis contact Mrs Braun. Tickets canalso be ordered from her (ph 870 6045).
Several past recipients will be pre-sent at the luncheon this year, includ-ing local rowers Tyson Williams,Graham Oberlin-Brown and cox IvanPavich who will be competing in thisyear’s World Rowing Championshipson Lake Karapiro.
‘‘We wish them every success.’’CONGRATULATIONS
The Cornerstone Trust sends con-gratulations to another grant recipi-ent, Carla Hohepa, on her outstandingperformance for the Black Ferns inthis year’s Rugby World Cup.
She scored her team’s solitary try ina 13-10 victory over England to helpwin a fourth World Cup for NewZealand.
For her efforts, Carla was adjudgedthe International Rugby Board’s Per-sonality of the Year after finishing asthe tournament’s leading try scorer.

Waipa District Council says
the remedial work is part of thecontract, as was expected, butwas made worse and held upbecause of the extremely wetweather.

below where vehicles track. Now that the ground has
settled and better weatherarrived the seal will bereinstated.
Progress being made on temporary Narrows bridgeThe New Zealand Transport
Agency (NZTA) hopes to have acrossing over the WaikatoRiver at the Narrows operatingby the end of October.
Work is currently beingcarried out on a temporarysingle-lane bailey bridge to taketraffic over State Highway 21(Airport Road).
The temporary bailey bridgewill be immediately down-stream from the existing bridgeand will allow one lane of trafficwhich will be controlled bytraffic signals.
The Narrows Bridge wasclosed on September 16 whenthe NZTA was unable to con-tinue monitoring the erosion
damage in the vicinity of thebridge due to rising river levels.
The bridge will remainclosed until the river leveldrops and further analysis ofthe river banks can beundertaken.
NZTA State Highway Mana-ger Kaye Clark says they aredoing everything they can to
reopen the existing bridgebefore the end of October.
‘‘But that will depend on howquickly we can complete theassessment of the erosion nearthe existing structure and whatthat assessment shows us.
‘‘Obviously work cannot becompleted until the river levelrecedes.’’

Webb proud of teamNZ Youth Olympians excel in Singapore
TC071010SP14TEAM manager Neal Webb with some of the New Zealand track athletes on a day off in the GamesVillage in Singapore.
BY COLIN THORSEN
The 11-strong New Zealandathletics team managed by TeAwamutu’s Neal Webb did theircountry proud at the YouthOlympic Games in Singapore.
The undoubted highlight wasJackson Gill winning a silvermedal in the shot put.
Webb says it was an awesomeachievement considering Gillbecame ill the day after hisarrival at the village, was bedridden and placed in isolation.
He went to qualifying but wasstraight back to bed, only emerg-ing from isolation a day beforecompetition.
Waikato athletes JuliaRatcliffe, Mohamed Ali and JennaHansen all excelled making ‘B’finals.
If Gill was dogged by bad luck,so too was Waikato athleteMathew Holcroft, who sufferedmuscle cramping and had to with-draw from the 10,000m walk final.
‘‘I had watched him train andto see his determination, I believea top eight placing was wellwithin his grasp,’’ says Webb.
Team captain Hazel Bowering-Scott, Anna Lisa Uttley andJoshua Hawkins all made ‘B’finals in their respective events.
Bowering-Scott made theOceania Continent girls’ medleyrelay team and Hawkins reserve
for the boys’ team.Brad Mathas and Yarride
Rosario made ‘B’ and ‘C’ finalsrespectively.
Webb says Singapore lived upto its reputation of being hot, clean, friendly and vibrant.
The scene was set from day oneon arrival, the Singapore peoplehad really gone out of their way tomake these games memorable.
The Olympic Village atNanyang Technological Univers-ity was an amazing setup.
A hockey turf, swimming pooland weights room all within theUniversity Campus were avail-able for the athletes to use.
Just outside the Village, fiveminutes walk from the bus drop-off was the University’s track, again with an outdoor swimmingpool, which was used by theathletes after training in 30degrees plus heat and anotherweights room and large gym-nasium facility, tennis courts andfive outdoor basketball hoops.
There was a lot a walking to bedone daily at the village, includ-ing a 7-10 minute stroll to break-fast, lunch and dinner.
Webb says the stroll was alluphill, so the athletes soon learnthow important conserving energyand resting their legs was.
‘‘Once competition started wewere faced with a 45 minute bustrip to the warm up track, fol-
lowed by a 10 minute bus trip tothe call in room at the competi-tion track.
‘‘The format used at theseOlympics made for an actionpacked few hours of competitionand in the 30 plus degree heat thiswas just right.’’
Qualification was held overthree morning sessions followedby a day off then three morning/evening sessions.
Everyone got to compete atleast twice. Those disqualified inround one went on to compete ineither the ‘B’ final for field eventsor ‘D’ final in the sprints. Webbsays this helped keep the athletesfocused, knowing that they wouldhave to compete again.
No parents were allowed in theGames Village — ‘‘the athleteswere there to do a job and that wasto perform and participate in thedifferent cultural and educationalprogrammes.’’
Webb says the athletes wereable to catch up with their parentsoutside of the village to spendtime with them sightseeing etc.
New Zealand’s entire 80 strongYouth Olympic team includedathletes from a range of 16 sport-ing disciplines, including rowing, athletics, badminton, cycling, wrestling, equestrian, hockey, judo, shooting, table tennis, aquatics, basketball, boxing, sail-ing, triathlon and weight-lifting.

Rist again in medals at world kickboxing
TC071010SP15ASAM RIST with his second bronze medal from the worldjunior kickboxing championships.
TC071010SP15BFOCUSSED: Maurice O’Connor in the centre of the action refereeing in Serbia.
BY COLIN THORSEN
Te Awamutu Phantomkickboxer Sam Rist hasreturned home sporting abronze medal from the worldjunior championships forthe second time in threeyears.
The just turned 18-year-old very nearly struck silverin Serbia, losing by only twopoints to an Italian in thesemi-finals.
Rist gave as good as hetook throughout the threerounds contest to decide whoprogressed to the final.
It was a nail-biting affairthat went down to the wire. The difference in the end wasthe Italian hit Rist two timesmore in the contact areathan his opponent managed.
In his two earlier bouts toget to the semis, Rist beatboth his British andCroatian opponents.
Phantom kickboxingcoach, Rick Dobson says it isa brilliant result to becomethe third equal best in theworld for the second time.
The Te Awamutu teen-ager won his first worldjunior bronze medal inNaples in 2008.
‘‘It’s a fantastic result forSam, the club and the town,’’says Dobson.
Rist was the only memberof the 18-strong New Zealandteam to medal.
It was his last opportunityto compete in junior ranks —next year he steps up tosenior ranks.
Not that that will beoverly daunting for akickboxer who has been
competing domesticallyagainst senior opponentssince he was aged 16.
‘‘He’s a big lad for his age,so he’s coped admirablyfighting senior opponents inNew Zealand,’’ says Dobson.
‘‘He wins most of hismatches, it’s unusual for himto lose.’’
Dobson says what Ristneeds now is valuable inter-national experience insenior ranks in order to
develop into a world classsenior kickboxer.
Te Awamutu’s two othermembers of the New Zealandteam at the junior worldsboth acquitted themselveswell.
Thomas Rea (15) had themisfortune to be eliminatedin the quarter finals afterreceiving a broken nose froman accidental head clashwith a British fighter whenleading the match.
Isaac Mulgrew (10) beathis first round opponentfrom Kazhakistan, then lostto an Italian in the quarterfinals.
Dobson says both theseyoung kickboxers gainedimmense experience fromthe event.
Te Awamutu’s MauriceO’Connor officiated at theworld championships, get-ting to referee a World titlefight.

Green teamoff to flyerBY COLIN THORSEN
Te Awamutu Sports Green served a warning oftheir intentions to defend their twenty20 title whenWaikato Valley cricket season commenced onSaturday.
The defending President’s Cup holders thrashedthe hosts Otorohanga by 79 runs, then accounted forOtorohanga by 14 runs.
The beefed up Green team of 2010-11 turned on apower batting display first up against Otorohanga, posting a formidable 186/4 in 20 overs.
New recruit Ben Speake made an instant impactfor his new club, top scoring with 60, including fourfours and three sixes.
Speake was Waikato Valley Cricket Association’ssenior men’s B player of the year last season.
Carl Botha also had little or no respect for theopposition bowlers during his whirlwind knock of 54not out, smashing seven sixes.
Ben Missen (13) and Cameron Forsman (11no)were other batsmen to reach double figures.
Otorohanga were bowled out for 107 in reply, withRicky Palacio contributing 33, Sean Beatty 11 andChris Keech 19.
Speake showed what a fine allround asset he willbe for the Green team, completing a good doubleclaiming three wickets.
Medium pacer Jared Bayly showed good earlyseason form with 3-26, as did left armer AndrewLawry with 3-14 off four overs.
Te Awamutu Sports Green again posted a matchwinning score of 146/6 against Otorohanga.
Highlight of the innings was an unbeaten 55 byanother off season signing, Ben Stinson, whoplundered six sixes.
Other useful contributions came from BenMissen (12), Matthew Missen (16), Cameron Forsman(15) and Hamish Forsman (18no).
Andrew Parsons, with 2-19, and Karl Swanson,2-22, were Pirongia’s most successful bowlers.
Pirongia got within sniffing distance of chasingdown the target, largely thanks to aggressive knocksfrom Hamish Crooks (41) and Andrew Parsons (42).
Highlight of this game was the first hat-trick ofthe season to Andrew Lawry, his third victim beingsuperbly stumped by keeper Hamish Forsman. Theglovesman looked slick all day, also claiming a catchand three stumpings against Otorohanga.
Earlier in the day Pirongia thrashed Waitete by10 wickets.
In one of the biggest mis-matches for many a year,Waitete were bowled out for 11 runs, with MichaelMcAdam claiming 4-4, Andrew Parsons 3-4 and D.Everatts 2-2.
Te Awamutu Sports Gold team had a mixed day, losing to Aroma Raiders by 29 runs and winningcomfortably by 100 runs over Leamington.
The Raiders scored 151 batting first at AlbertPark, then dismissed the home team for 122.
Webber Stewart had bowling figures of 3-16 andboth Bryce McCandlish and Mike Aitken scored 30runs for the Gold team.
In game two, Te Awamutu Sports Gold scored180/4 with Graeme Stewart top scoring with 81 andGary Muraahi 34 not out. Leamington could onlymanage 80 in reply, having no answer to the leg-spinning of Michael Caldwell who claimed animpressive 4-14.
All teams have two further games this Saturday.

Win classic Megadeth CDMegadeth play the No Sleep
Till Festival, ASB Showgrounds,Auckland on Friday, December 10with support from NOFX, TheDropkick Murphys, ParkwayDrive, Katatonia, Frenzel Rhomband more. Lot’s, lot’s more!!
Celebrate the most welcomereturn of one of ‘The Big Four’ bypicking up a copy of thrash-metalkings Megadeth’s now classicalbum Rust In Peace. But waitthere’s more! Megadeth will beplaying Rust In Peace in itsentirety and original bassist DaveEllefson is rejoining them for theoccasion.
The critics said it best whenthey variously described Rust InPeace as — a mature, complex, surprisingly consonant, sparelyproduced album . . . simply put,RUST never sleeps. A moshingalbum that really manages to mosh. . . a veritable treat for the ears.Don’t mistake Megadeth’s apoca-lyptic imagery for doomsday
overkill . . . even without the lyricsthis bands instrumental attack isso ferocious these songs wouldsound like the end of the worldanyway.
Holy Wars . . . The PunishmentDue is an absolutely crushingopener that shows off the technicalexpertise of the musicians,
whileHanger 18 covers the famil-iar ground of alien visitation andgovernment conspiracy.
Other highlights include theheavy-hitters Five Magics,Lucretia, and Rust In Peace . . .Polaris.
It’s stuffed with classics andthe full-fat production. A nostal-gic essential!
The undercard is spearheadedby punk rock stalwarts NOFX andBoston’s finest The DropkickMurphys who have a library ofhit’s and socially-aware punkrock anthems between them.
Something for everyone is theorder of the day — be in quick and
don’t delay!Tickets from Ticketek. To be in to win simply put your
name, address and daytime phonenumber on the back of a standardsized envelope, address it to theMegadeth CD Competition andmake sure it reaches our office by5pm, Tuesday.
